Or something close to that. Bird hymns sweet? (and of course, it's cedar, not cedat)

Using Google, I found several sheet-music vendors and libraries that list "The Green Cathedral," with words by Gordon Johnstone, music by Carl Hahn, 1921. Couldn't find any lyrics, though.

Good to see this. I've been to the Tree Cathedral on the Dunstable Downs near Studham which is wonderful. Not sure if they do services there, but if they did, then this song/hymn would be perfect for it!

I think the song you are looking for is "Above a Plain" a venerable old camp song.

I think the lyrics are as follows:

Lyrics by Relson are correct.
The musical score, with chords noted, and lyrics are given in the Girl Guides and Girls Scouts songbook, "Chansons de notre chalet," 5th ed., 1971.
The note says it is a Czech marching tune, adapted by Fjeril Hess and Lillian Jackson.

thanks a lot. When was in 7th and/or 8th grade (1955-1957) - I forget. We use to sing this song in music class. Our teacher was Mrs. Hutchinson and I swear to God, this lady was at the same time...bigger than a three-family house and one of the most wonderful teachers I ever had. She use to pound on the piano keyboard...so...so loud. But she made you (in a nice way) want to sing.

I loved her and I love that song. Now that I have found the song (see above, I bought the sheet music) does anyone know where I can get ahold of an actual recording of this wonderful piece?

My daughter gave me the lyrics as a Christmas present since I loved it so. Fascinating how one teacher can make such an impact. I learned it in 1941/1942 in Kensington Grade School, Great Neck, NY. My teacher was Miss Sorenson, tall and thin with long "floating" arms and hands that come to think of it looked somewhat like branches with a gentle wind blowing through them.

I found myself humming this lovely old tune today while outside enjoying the beauty of the forest. I remember that our eight-grade music appreciation book was "Old Songs In New Dress". I related to this song, as well as others in the book, however, I "The Green Cathedral" was my favorite. After forty-seven years I could not remember all of the lyrics, and thank you so much for posting. I also enjoyed reading everyone's comments.

I'm glad I found this discussion. I've played a piano solo arrangement of "Green Cathedral" since 1973 (Carl Hahn, arranged by Bruce Carleton). I never realized it had words until a few years ago. Now if I can just figure out how the words and music fit together. This is one of those songs I like to play when I'm feeling upset; it always makes me feel so peaceful after playing it.

I am so very thankful for those of you who posted the lyrics to "The Green Cathedral" Isn't it funny how after many, many years that a song pops into your head and you can't remember all the words. Happened to me. This particular song I sang at my college audition for my vocal professor way back in 1965. I had the sheet music but it was ruined by water damage. Tried to find the lyrics but to no avail til I found this web site. Beleive it or not I can still sing pretty good today and am looking forward to getting my copy of the music . Hello, I've remembered this song for years but it seemed nobody I asked ever remembered it. We sang it in 8th grade Chorus, unfortunately I can't remember the teacher's name, as I'd like to thank her. It was in Syracuse NY, Levy Jr High, 1955-56. Today I sang what I could remember (the first verse) to a friend who loved it. I think I did pretty well after after 53 years! So then I got the idea of doing a Google Search for the lyrics. and the rest, as they say, is history ... Thank you all so very very much!
PS: Now I'm going to Search for an audio recording.

This song was sung as a solo in the outdoor chapel of my summer camp in Maine, back in the '60s. It is hauntingly beautiful, as was the chapel, and it floods me with treasured memories. I think of it often when I'm hiking. But then I find myself wishing I were back in Maine!

I found the lyrics at sheetmusicplus.com. I had to buy the entire score, because it only showed the first three pages of the hymn, which had a very long piano intro.

Lyrics alone are also foound at a religious site called Seeking Spirit. It came up when I googled the title of the hymn as one of the choices.

At East Junior High School (in my hometown of Joplin, Missouri / early 1960s) we oft got to pick a song for the class. Singing was 'the big treat' in Mister Jim Williams's class, an elderly gentleman who was memorable for his love of music as well as caring greatly about 'his children' (students). This song - THE GREEN CATHEDRAL was always my favorite. A classmate played the piano on allllll the other songbook melodies, but Mr. W. did the honors on this tune. He became 'one-with-the-music' -- his eyes would close, head rolled back and his hands would flip away from the keyboard into the air as he added extra flurishes-of-notes. It was glorious! We really were blessed to have experienced his beautiful performance (a half century ago) -- and, to have had the opportunity to voice for the poetic lyrics.

How we loved this song in the seventh and eighth grade!

There doesn't seem to be a MIDI of the melody on the Internet, so I made one and will send it in for posting. If you have been looking for the music check back here for a MIDI where the bell choir plays the introduction and then the simulated choir sings the melody.

It's not an easy song. It changes from the key of D to B-flat and back.

There was a Girl Scout Camp in the Adirondack Mountains near Caroga Lake NY. The name of the camp was Camp Kowaunkami. It was beloved by all that attended it. I was there as a child for 5 summers and as a counselor for 3 summers. This beautiful song was learned by all that attended. (I was there from 1948-53 as a child and 1960-63 as an adolescent counselor) These were truly the years of innocence and the world was much calmer even though it was a post WW2 time. At age 76 I still remember this and other inspiring songs but most of all I remember that we sang and rejoiced in friendship, fellowship and love for the beautiful gifts of nature. if only we could recapture these values today my heart and soul would sing!
