Subject: song for my Mom From: bet Date: 01 May 99 - 12:51 PM Wish I had a song for my mom. I just finished weeding her garden which she took over from me 4 years ago when she moved in. I was glad to let her do it, I could never seem to stay ahead of the weeds. Often I would come home from school and see that she had been at her flowers again. Weeding here, planting there or maybe even moving a rock that wasn't just right. It was a good flower bed for her, in the sun and people noticed it when they came to visit. Today I cleaned her flower bed, moved a rock or two and planted wild flowers, her favorite. I then read Catpaws mother in law's letter. Mothers (in-laws included) are really special people. Mine always seem to be right, oh she made her share of mistakes but don't we all. I came home one day and she had dug ALL the Iris out of the flower bed, I complained because it was the one thng that always came up and never took any work, she smiled and and said they'd come back. Last year we didn't have any Iris, but this morning as I tugged at the weeds the Iris she said would be there were, she was right. I always tried to help my mom, do what she asked, after all she was my friend. I have a regret, the night before she died she asked me to take her home, I told her I couldn't because I could not give her the care she needed, I thought I'd bring her home in a coulple of days. She just wanted to say good-bye at home and that request I denied. She knew her time had come, I did not but somehow out in her garden today she told me it was o.k. The flowers coming up and the sun will shine. I'd like a song for MY MOM, not sad for she would want it to be a happy one full of spring and life. Sorry to ramble on like this, as most of you have figured out I'm not the wordy one, that's Kat's job but I jsut had to let someone know I miss my mom and I'm sorry I couldn't bring her home. bet |
Subject: RE: song for my Mom From: katlaughing Date: 01 May 99 - 01:00 PM Jeez, Bet, the one day out of the whole year I put on makeup, yes! makeup, then come in here and read what you've written about Mom! Well, I can repair the tracks of my tears and I wouldn't have missed this for a minute. As you can see phoaks, this apple isn't far from that apple. Bet, I remember having bedding plants delivered to her, for that garden last year and they were beautiful. And know this, dear sister, you did everything anybody could have to make Mom's last days comfortable and surrounded by your love. we all have some regrest when we look back at our past actions and decisions; I am so very sorry that I was not able to be down there to help and see her, but remember we were all there at Christmas and that was most important to her. One song that really doesn't fit what you're looking for, but will always remind me of Mom, is what we used to sing to her, when we made her breakfast in bed, remember, "Lazy Mary will you get, will you get, will you get up in the morning"? Now....I hafta go blow my nose, 'cause my big sis made me cry! Love you, katlaughing |
Subject: RE: song for my Mom From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 01 May 99 - 01:19 PM A mom song guaranteed to keep the tears flowing is the one Priscilla Herdman sings, "I'll love you forever"... I'l see if it's in the DT; if not I'll post it. Kat & Bet, my mom is still here and very cherished but I dread the day when I'll have togo thru what you're experiencing now. I ache for you and extend my own motherly love to you! Allison |

Subject: RE: song for my Mom From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 01 May 99 - 02:54 PM Couldn't find the song in the DT. Here it is, as sung by Priscilla Herdman on her eponymous recording: I'll Love You Forever words and music by Allen Power A young woman sings softly rocking her child Their faces aglow in the twilight. A boy who by day ran unbridled and wild, Her arms now encircle and hold tight. Her melody lingers like dew on the leaves; His eyelids grow heavy as sleep dims his sight.
REFRAIN: I'll love you forever, |
Subject: RE: song for my Mom From: Joe Offer Date: 01 May 99 - 03:02 PM ....not to detract from the sentiments, Allison, but wouldn't an eponymous recording by Priscilla Herdman be titled Priscilla Herdman? "I'll Love You forever," a song written by Allen Power, is on a wonderful Priscilla Herdman CD titled Forever and Always. I may be worng, but I don't think Priscilla has an eponymous recording, at least not on CD. -Joe Offer, being picky- But forgive the interruption. It's a wonderful song, on a wonderful album. I may even be "wrong..." |
Subject: RE: song for my Mom From: Sandy Paton Date: 01 May 99 - 03:05 PM Bet: Do you know Gordon Bok's "Turning Toward the Morning?" It has this verse: It's a pity we don't know What the little flowers know. They can't face the cold November; They can't take the wind and snow. They put their glories all behind them, Bow their heads and let it go; But you know they'll be there, Shining, in the morning. Seems to me your Mom knew that, too. Sandy |
Subject: RE: song for my Mom From: The Shambles Date: 01 May 99 - 03:17 PM Kat and Bet.
This is a song for my mom, bless her. Now Your Not There The moon rose low in the sky, Like a young eagle first trying to fly. Before he climbs and is soaring way on high. I don't like the rules to this game, It's filling up my heart with pain. Why can't things stay the same? Don't cry, there's no surprise, The sun has rose and set in your eyes. Welcoming eyes now filled with tears of goodbye. There are things I still wanted to share, Life's empty, now you're not there. Don't think I didn't care. It's OK, it's just the way, All living things fade and decay. Sun follows moon, night follows day. There are so many things left unsaid, They echo around in my head. I can speak them, now you are dead. The moon rose low in the sky, Like a young eagle first trying to fly. Before he climbs and is soaring way on high. Roger Gall 1995. |

Subject: RE: song for my Mom From: sail Date: 01 May 99 - 05:53 PM Between the Catspaw news and responses and now this thread, I'm really feeling emotional. I copied some of the songs from the thread Alice refreshed and sure enjoyed sharing them with my mom. Loves Old Sweet Song, and especially Beautiful Isle of Somewhere, written in 1897, way before my mother was born. I had to no more than mention the title and she was singing the chorus. She has an amazing memory of old songs and songs her mother sang. Anyway, Bet, Beautiful Isle of Somewhere is for you mom. Refresh 21-Sep-97 Lovingkindness Song Circle for the beautiful lyrics. I'm just typing away and this looks okay to me. Hope it passes muster. Left the quotation marks out for fear that would do something weird. |

Subject: RE: song for my Mom From: Jeri Date: 24 Nov 00 - 01:04 PM This may be presumtuous of me. If so, I apologise. This is meant as a gift. I wasn't a member when Bet started the thread. Anyhow, I'm obviously no great songwriter, and I just tried to put Bet's words into rhyme. My Mother's Garden I wish I had a song for Mom. Of joy and life and laughter Of how springtime follows winter Now and ever after My mom cared for my garden when she moved in with me I was glad to let her do it, I couldn't keep up with the weeds Sometimes, I would come home from school to find she'd been working in the flowers Weeding here, planting there for untold peaceful hours It was a good flower bed, and the sun it shone on all And people always noticed it when e'er they came to call Today I cleaned her garden, in quiet happy toil And sowed some seeds of her beloved wildflowers in the soil She'd dug up all the irises, one day when I came home I complained they were the one thing that could manage on their own She smiled and said that they'd come back, for Iris always do And I held my tongue, for mother always knew Last year there were no irises, and mother too had passed I thought she'd been wrong to believe the fragile flowers could last But this morning as I cleared debris from last year, past and gone I found them sprouting once again, tiny, sure and strong. And she wanted only one thing the night before she died She wanted me to take her home, but this one thing was denied I regret I tried to hold her here, I wanted her to stay But she knew her time had come, only "goodbye" left to say But this morning in the garden, she told me she'd come home And she would always be with me, I'd never be alone In the garden, I will know she's there and everything's alright In the garden, I will feel her love as the flowers feel the light I wish I had a song for Mom. Of joy and life and laughter Of how springtime follows winter Now and ever after |

Subject: RE: song for my Mom From: katlaughing Date: 01 Dec 00 - 05:41 PM Oh, Jeri, I am sorry I missed this earlier! I don't know ABC, yet, BUT you have NOT been presumptious and I know bet will love it, too. Good thing I am not wearing any makeup, today, either, 'cause you've got me bawling my eyes out! Any chance of a midi by email, dear womon? Oh, and my arse, you're not a songwriter! I snort in derision at your modesty!**BG** I've heard you and your songs and they and you are damn fine! Thank you, thank you! BTW, the tune you wrote for me has been on my answering machine ever since you sent it. I get lots of queries about *that tune*, everyone loves it. Dear, dear friends, I'll send bet an email and make sure she sees this. Thank you, luvyakat |

Subject: RE: song for my Mom From: Jeri Date: 01 Dec 00 - 11:13 PM Kat, it means a lot that you like it, and I'll e-mail the tune. I'm happily surprised to find the other tune is getting air play! The tune for this grabbed me and wouldn't let me go. I spent hours working on the fancier midi, and even I like it. (And I don't like most of the tunes I've written that much.) I wish MY mom were around to hear it.

Subject: RE: song for my Mom From: katlaughing Date: 02 Dec 00 - 12:13 AM Oh, Jeri, thanks so much for the midis! What a gorgeous tune and, as I said in my email, what a beautiful validation for bet. That is what makes Mudcatters so incredibly wonderful...this gifting of tunes and words and care and kindness and laughter and love...thank you so much, Jeri. You mean MY tune your write for ME is getting airplay? Where?? That is wonderful!!! And, I think you are your own worst critic, dearie, everything I've heard of yours is very melodic, well arranged, very "hummable" and that is a real test of a tune for me, that and memorability, and, yours do have both very much. Thanks so much, luvyaLOTSkat |
Subject: RE: song for my Mom From: Jeri Date: 02 Dec 00 - 09:34 AM Kat, the other tune is getting airplay on your answering machine. :-) I think about CarolC, who just lost her mother, and a local friend here who just lost his. I read Bet's words from last year, and remember my own. I tried to sing the words to the tune to see how they'd fit, and I couldn't get through it. The song is for your mom, but somehow it's for mine too. There's a point where the immediate pain of loss begins to fade, and is replaced by the memories of love, and shared experiences. My mom didn't have a garden, but she'd swipe roadside wildflowers and plant them in the yard. And I could tell you the story of how a huge tree fell through her roof in a bad spring storm, and she went out the next day and hung Christmas ornaments on the unearthed roots... |

Subject: RE: song for my Mom From: Tinker Date: 02 Dec 00 - 11:17 PM Okay the tears are running down my face, and I haven't even heard the tune yet. I'm lucky enough to have my mom coming up to spend a couple of days with my kids while the hubby and I go off to Miami for a couple days. I'm probably gonna cry on sight now. Jeri it's truly beautiful. The wonderful woman we bought our house from died a couple weeks ago. But she too left a legacy in the iris and peony gardens. We've added iris from our home in Boston, and lilacs from Grandma's --Memory gardens are the very best kind. Tinker |
Subject: RE: song for my Mom From: durham Date: 03 Dec 00 - 08:35 AM I know what it is like to miss your mom, I just lost my mom, my only sister and my brother all within six weeks of each other to cancer. As a child she sang many songs to us. I have tried and tried to find lyrics of which most I know and would be happy to share...but the origin I would love to know. I found one on this site and it had a midi and I just cried and cried when I played it. She sang all these songs to my children too. I just wish I could find some of them. You will be in my thoughts as I search. Cindy |
Subject: RE: song for my Mom From: Wavestar Date: 03 Dec 00 - 09:23 AM I don't know if this is appropriate, but I wrote it a couple years ago in response to a friend of mine losing her beloved grandmother. The flower theme reminded me. Small bodies only briefly contain great spirits Although the light and voices remain in your heart contained in your own life, and spread through your hands. When you cry, remember that the rain off your cheeks will bring roses. Do not grieve too long- She would have liked to see them delighting you. -J

Subject: RE: song for my Mom From: katlaughing Date: 03 Dec 00 - 09:25 AM Cindy, thank you for posting and I am so sorry for your loss. This is a very supportive and caring community, if you start a thread with as specific a title as you can muster, with a bit fo lyrics or title in it, they will come through for you on almost any song with lyrics, story, tune, etc. Losing mom was almost unbearable, but losing her, along with my brother and one of my sisters would definitely be unbearable. Please know that I send you good thoughts and may you find comfort in the passage of time and the memories you have of your loved ones. kat |

Subject: RE: song for my Mom From: Megan L Date: 03 Dec 00 - 12:16 PM Bet and everyone sorry for not reading the whole thread first but I just arrived back in Orkney after burying my Dad, so not the best time for long reading. I was on my way down to look after him for a few days while my brother was on holiday when word came through from my sister in law who had taken him to her house for the night. If we look for regrets we will find them but I learned from this short poem I found among his writting and asked the minister to read at the funeral. THE FRAGRANT MEMORY 'Twas only a lovely memory That's followed me down through the years It's been both a friend and companion So near me when trouble appears It softens my judgement of others It mellows the thoughts in my mind 'Twas only a fragrant memory Yet a treasure in life I find |
