folks--

On my old computer, I used Audacity to record portions of CD's and create MP3s. The goal was to create little snippets to use for learning/practicing tunes.

On my new computer, Audacity doesn't seem to record; the box where you pick input source (mic, line, etc.) is whited out.

I went to the Windows control panel, and it looks like my (built-in) sound card is correctly listed for both playback and recording.

Any tips on how I can fix this?

Does the built in sound card have dual capability?

Make sure your input and output devices are recognized and selected by clicking on EDIT then selecting PREFERENCES.

A bit ot but I've been looking for some music software (midi mostly and I seem to have settled on RoseGarden) for Linux. I came across Ardour which at least looks as if it's a pretty serious recording/editing program. Looks like they have an OSX version - might be of interest to some of the Mac users here.

Thanks for the heads-up on RoseGarden, Jon. The screenshots suggest a pretty steep learning curve though... My knowledge of Cubase is from the Atari ST days...

I was a Cakewalk user. Haven't played with anything like that in ages and hadn't (not that I'd really looked much) found anything close enough for me in Linux. After an initial play with Rosegarden, I think even if get used to it, I would prefer Cakewalk but I should be able to manage my old type of midi dabblings with it.

As for learning curves, I think I would find the learning curve for Ardour far to steep for anything I want (and Audacity does me) but I thought it might be worth a mention.

Hmm. That I don't know. It's listed in system info as ReakTek Hi Definition Audio, built into the the MoBo. In the XP control panel, it defaulted to RealTek HD Audio Output for playback, RealTek Audo Input for sound recording (the only other option was digital, and that didn't work, either).

It's Win XP professional.

Any clues?

Did you make sure that that it is also selected in Audacity?

Thanks to all posters.

Solved the problem. Turns out that the new motherboard/sound board install disk also installed a separate sound control module that was pretty much buried in the control panel. Found out that the record level was just turned all the way down on that panel.

Sometimes one just has to go back to the beginning and check everything out once again, and again.
