Sheet music here at the National Library of Australia digital collection.

John McCormack clip here at YouTube. You can probably find a downloadable sound clip at Internet Archive, Virtual Gramophone, Honking Duck or a similar site--I haven't checked.

Must have been a typo on my cd listing for the writer...

And the newest Irish Tenors concert cd Live in Belfast)includes this song, beautifully sung by Anthony Kearns.

Cheers,

Mary

Actually, it is J L (James) Molloy who wrote Love's Old Sweet Song, etc. Since he also wrote Kerry Dance, it is a possibility, given the similar material.

Just this minute looked at the John McCormack site, found this: Bantry Bay (Traditional/Old Irish Air, arranged by James L. Molloy)

Mick (or somebody) - is there any background information on this song, like who wrote it and when? SingsIrish says it was J.C. Molloy, but I'm wondering if it could be J.L. Molloy, who wrote "Darby and Joan" and "Love's Old Sweet Song" toward the end of the 19th Century.
Peter T, a usually reliable source (?), says this was recorded by the Irish Tenors.

(Correction made to J.L. Molloy after eagle-eyes Dale noted it)

Whoa! I just realize who I remind me of: THere's a joke about a psychologist administering a Rohrshach test to a new client. He gives him the first inkblot and asks, "What do you see?"

"Them's a woman's titties!"

The shrink hands him another inkblot. "What do you see here?"

"That's a woman lookin' in a mirror--at her c--t!"

"And here?"

"That's two women looking at each other and playin' with themsel's."

After the client had described similar images in the next seven inkblots, the psychologist said in wonder, "I've never tested anyone as totally preoccupied with sex as you are."

"Me!" the patient shouted. "You're the one with all the dirty pictures."

And a fine and admirable job your doing offilling in, Lad. In fact, Seed, I think perhaps I would have poked it in two more times to make for an even ten count on the thread log!

I keep getting this message and afterwards I go back and try again. That explains the double/triple post (put that way because the third one is altered a bit--not altered like my dogs, who are missing parts, but with something added).

BANTRY BAY

As I'm sitting all alone in the gloaming
It might have been but yesterday
That we watched the fisher sails all homing
Till the little herring fleet at anchor lay
Then the fisher girls with baskets swinging
Come running down the old stone way
Every lass to her sailor lad was singing
A welcome back to Bantry Bay

Then we heard the piper's sweet note tuning
And all the lassies turned to hear
As they mingled with a soft voice crooning
Till the music floated down the wooden pier
"Save you kindly colleens all" said the piper
"Hands across and trip it while I play"
And a tender sound of a song and merry dancing
Stole softly over Bantry Bay

As I'm sitting all alone in the gloaming
The shadows of the past draw near
And I see the loving faces around me
That used to glad the old brown pier
Some are gone up on their last lov'd homing
Some are left, but they are old and grey
And we're waiting for the tide in the gloaming
To sail up on the Great High-way
To the land of rest unending
All peaceful from Bantry Bay

Regards Mick Bracken
