Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: GUEST,Bob Ryszkiewicz Date: 08 Jan 08 - 09:43 AM Hi Kids: You got the curiosity going. If it's this Bob you're talking about, I never did Mr. Bojangles, but I opened for Jerry Jeff Walker, who had the hit with it. The "stick line" I don't remember...It is a good song though. Flashes going off in the neurons, old memories, me and Mr. Bruce at a party, 1970? at Liz Tansey's place on Prince Arthur. Felicity Fanjoy, sweetness. Hope she's still going. What a beautiful spirit that was the essence of the 60's. A voice gentle & quiet like the winter mist. (Looking out the window of my studio into the back yard with the trees. God's Blessings...) You got calmer just standing next to her. And, in the era of Vietnam, this meant a lot to me. "Our condition was not pure" to mangle a line from one of Mr. B's songs. As we attempted the seemingly impossible task of crossing the street, little did we know that nearly 40 years later, all this would be happening. I used to watch Bruce at The Yellow Door, observing how much he was getting out of that Martin without playing 6 notes a second. "Che Guevara," "Can I Come Across to You," you learn from stuff like that... Yeah, shows like what happened at La Sala are like meteors, they are here and then gone. A group of like-minded spirits come together for a brief moment in time, and then POOF; another memory... And as time goes by, you begin to realize just how precious all this stuff is... Oops, the squirrels are looking at me. They see the human inside the house and show themselves to get some nuts. Feeding time. Got to go... bob |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Azizi Date: 08 Jan 08 - 05:50 AM I hope that you too are still musically active. -GUEST,Jack Shultz I'm glad that you two and three and four and five & so many more are still musically active -meaning Bruce, and Bob and all the rest of those who were composing good songs, and making good music way back when they were teenagers {acne challenged or not}. And from reading the descriptions of Bruce's Montreal concert, I'd say that Guest Jack missed out on a great musical experience by opting to attend his jam session rather than that concert. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: GUEST,Jack Shultz Date: 08 Jan 08 - 01:25 AM Hi Bob, If I remember you right, you were the guy who played and sang "Bo Jangles" and introduced with the line " you can't beat a good song with a stick". You were right. That was a great song. I remember Bruce Murdoch back in the days when he was an acne challenged teenager performing at the New Penelope. He wrote some good songs himself, and he introduced me to a lot of great Dylan songs. The last time I saw him was back at the '73 or '74 Sudbury "Northern Lights Folk Festival". Unfortunately, he put his politics ahead of his music in his performance, expressing his solidarity with the North Korean regime. Lately, I heard him on CBC radio here in Montreal. I heard he was performing on Friday night, but that was my jam night, and I never miss my jam night if I can help it. I hope that you too are still musically active. Take care. Jack |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Rapparee Date: 07 Jan 08 - 05:07 PM I haven't posted here yet not because I didn't think Bruce could do it -- hell, anybody who fights fires and cleans up wrecks while working with high school students can do ANYTHING -- but because I kept reading this thread title as "Bruce Murdoch protest" and when I'd get it sorted out I'd be laughing too hard to post anything. I glad all was well. I only wish I could have been there. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Janie Date: 06 Jan 08 - 08:48 PM Ron, I've been in North Carolina enough years for my West Virginia twang to have substantially given way to a southern drawl. I don't recall hearing it, you must have sang it while I was seeing a man about a horse. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Peace Date: 06 Jan 08 - 05:34 PM I can't thank y'all enough for your kind words and messages and reactions. The gig was lots of fun for me and I re-met people I hadn't seen in decades. People with whom I grew up, some others with whom I narrowly missed spending the occasional night in jail, musicians I used to go listen to and given the opportunity still will. Many many people rode or drove long distances to come say hello and I was happy I didn't disappoint them--at least I don't think I did. I owe thanks--big time--to Noah, Ron, Shane (NOT the one from Blind River), Mike and many more people who worked 'behind the scene' to ensure things went accordingly. The sense of audience was very relaxing and I had fun telling a few stories--various mixtures of truth, fabrication and on occasion down-right lies. Adrien and Bob and their respective wives mushed dog teams through a howling blizzard (that's an example of a fabrication) to get there, Rocky Dalonzo (www.saltydog.ca/flash/cds.swf) who can be heard at that site and who is the same great guy he always was--age has been very kind to him because he doesn't look a day over 93 that's an example of a down-right lie but I have more hair than him which is an example of me bragging; Mike R and his wife who trecked through waist-deep snow drifts so Mike could do the MC work. To say I enjoyed myself would be a severe understatement. Someday C Ham and I will be formally introduced. And I cracked up when Bob R came with a few CD-copies of two old albums of mine and asked if I'd autograph them with the following: 'The sex was great, Bob. Bruce.' Of course I did sign them. However, never having been one to let things ride, I then inquired if he'd ever seen his aunt naked, and if not, would he care for some pictures. And he, never one to let things ride said "Only if they're in colour" (because he already had them in black and white). Bob is a class act whom one has to experience rather than just meet. Some points brought tears to my eyes, one of which was the number of people who remembered the words to "Go, Lassie, Go". (I was one of the people who remembered thus lending credence to my proposition that my memory is as good as ever--that's another example of a down-right lie, but when the singers (most people in the room) did harmonies and sounded as good as the Mormon Tabernacle Chorus (the word 'Choir' was taken by some group in Utah), it got me in the heart, as have so many of the postings on this thread. So it was a time of good things for which I am grateful and thankful. Merci bien beaucoup for all the encouragement, the hugs and the kisses--but I gotta tell ya, some of you guys have got to either shave or let it grow. This two-day-old beard stuff scratched the sh#t out of my tender cheeks. I wish so many other folks could have been there because the evening was for those I sang to. There or not, it came from the heart and that's where it will keep coming from. Thank you all. |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: GUEST,Bob Ryszkiewicz Date: 05 Jan 08 - 10:18 PM Hi Kids!: Home Run... I don't have to tell those who were there wassup. It was one of those "you had to be there" times where everybody hit the mark. And it brought a smile to my face to see 'ole MudRock come back even stronger than Ormstown. If you've ever done a show and been on-stage. I think you know what I'm talkin' about. He mos/def(Rap-Talk)WORKED for this one Folks. And two days in the studio, the radio shows, and obvious preparation gave you what went down at La Sala Rossa. Yep. It takes work to make it look easy... Makes you kinda wonder what he'd be coming up with after doing a little TOURsky, don't it? Guess he figured out the audience was either going to duct-tape him to the chair or not let him leave the building, cause he did "Can I Come Across To You..." You should have seen BM's face when I met him on the street outside before the show and tried to sell him some Bruce Murdoch CD's. Anything for a laugh over here friends. Got an autograph though... Found Big Daddy Z in the dressing room a little edgy before the show. Getting ready to do the opener. This guy works hard at his folk/art friends. Sorta looks like a young Keith Richards off drugs. LOL. HA...From this reviewmeister's perspective, I think once he saw how fast the room filled up, the "I better play my A-- off tonight" switch went ON. Good'un Noah... And Ron Bankley, well, what can you say. Class act all around. Even had a fan ask me if I could introduce him. The Ville Emard Blues Band Vet added just the right touch on guitar along with Andy Gryn's son on bass. Makin' poppa proud. And, there was enough food before the show at the resto downstairs to offer munchies to everybody who showed up...But, we beat 'em to it. So it came off as both a food and music feast for all who were brave enough to get off the couch and COME ON DOWN! Some of the usual suspects in the crowd: Bill Garrett, Sue-Ellen Lothrop/Borealis Records, stalwart Mike Regenstrief, Gerry Goodfriend, Andy Gryn, family & friend Bill, Mark Nerenberg, Linda Morrison(time for another show, girl...), Diane Alnicky, David Young, Olivia, and other suspicious 'catters incognito...Not to forget, the niece of Gary Eisenkraft, searching for the puzzle parts to help out her Mom on the "in-the-works" book on the Montreal Music Promoter. Stay tuned. Enough creative firepower in the room to produce "Gone with the Wind." So the rumours of Folk Music's demise have been greatly exaggerated... A new "Folk Boom?" Well, with sparkplugs like BM's show goin' off here and there, like Chuck Berry(Who? SLAP!) would say, "You Never Can Tell..." Bankster: Roger that...next time we play... bob |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Amos Date: 05 Jan 08 - 05:22 PM Before we leave the subject of Gerry Goodfriend's CKUT show with Bruce, I'd like to register a hearty "Well done!" to Gerry on his selection of songs throughout the program. They ranged from rare gems from the Carter Family and Arlo Guthrie to new and interesting pieces I have never heard. It was a great mix, and Gerry gets my thanks for a good job. Because of the total program length, the CD I am making from the show for a few friends will be a "Selections from...." in order to fit the parts of key interest onto one CD. I also want to say thanks to Gerry and CKUT for helping revitalize the music of one of Canada's National Treasures, unsung especially by himself, Bruce Murdoch. Amos |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: bankley Date: 05 Jan 08 - 05:04 PM 'seneses' ? well.. residue, I reckon.... The venue was, and is, a long time Spanish cultural center cum/bar/resto/concert hall, unionist, located in a once jewish working district... Paul Robeson appeared there in the 30's, didn't need a mic,,,,, the dressing room probably hasn't been repainted since.!!, nor should it be... hard to describe, I feel that the wealth of righteous support and real time experience will outweigh any negativity that occured at the organizational end.... , all things considered.... |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: bankley Date: 05 Jan 08 - 04:38 PM thanks folks...' I didn't now that 'Morning Papers' was what that song is called. Makes sense. Caught Murdoch almost with his pants down, which isn't sayin' much, what with all the fine looking women in the place...... The show was recorded on ADAT from the board. So what you hear is what happened, from Sylvain (the sound tech's point of 'view'. As I said to the Man, it's important to document as much as possible,( aurally, visually ... gee, did I leave any seneses out ?) then assess, weigh and decide what to use, make accessible for sharing, sale, barter, or otherwise. Keep your kind words and encouragement aimed at B.M. It makes a big difference, always has, always will. Stay tuned.... more later... merci Mudcatters.... R. .... and Bob, next time we play........ Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Amos Date: 05 Jan 08 - 04:35 PM Thanks, Adrien!! One path I have tried successfully -- if you think the sound quality is passable in the original -- is to hook the device up to the USB port of your computer, start a sound-recording software package like Audacity running, and play the whole recording into a BIG sound file which you can then either subdivide by cuts or send me for editing here. Note it will be a large file, make sure you have enough room on the target volume for it. If you take this approach, you may have to adjust your Sound settings so the system knows that the USB connection is the input channel, rather than the little sound-in port often included in basic computers. If the sound tech on site is willing he could provide a decent file from his equipment. I'd be happy to bur it if that would be helpful. A |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: GUEST,C. Ham in Montreal Date: 05 Jan 08 - 02:34 PM I was there too and it was a night that melted away the years. With Mike Regenstreif as the MC (Beer was right, Mike was a superb MC), with so many old familiar folkies in the audience, and hearing Bruce sing so his wonderful songs with such heart, and tell his stories and jokes, it was like being back at the Golem in the 70's. Bruce mostly sang his new songs and they were great. And it was also a special treat to hear him do a couple of his oldies, not too mention "Wild Mountain Thyme" and "Get Together" as singalongs. I was impressed with Noah Zacharin. It was my first time seeing him perform and his songs were good and his guitar playing was most impressive. The bass player with Bruce was Shane Grynn. The photographer upfront was his dad, Andy Grynn, a folk music fan from the old days. The song song that Ron Bankley sang was called "Morning Paper." To add to Beer's list, there were were several other Montreal folk personalities there including Bill Garrett, Sue Lothrop and Linda Morrison. I said hello to Bruce but there were too many people that wanted to talk to him so I didn't bring up my Mudcat name. I come to Montreal about once a month anyway to visit my mother, but it was well worth timing this trip to Bruce's concert. One more thing. Bruce mentioned Gary Eisenkraft who got the folk club thing going in Montreal in the '60's. It was carried on by Mike Regenstreif in the '70's and '80's and their traditions are being maintained by Matt and Rebecca Large who have been doing such a fine job presenting folk music concerts in Montreal over the past few years. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: bobad Date: 05 Jan 08 - 02:30 PM It was a marvellous evening all around, Bruce was in fine form and had the audience eating out of his hand. He sang a number of new songs and mixed in a couple of his earlier ones; Can I Come Across To You and Let's Lay Down Our Drums, along with a beautiful rendition of the traditional Wild Mountain Thyme and closed with a moving version of Dino Valenti's 60's anthem to peace and love, Let's Get Together, that had the audience singing along and brought tears to my wife's eyes. Noah Zacharin started the concert splendidly with a few of his own tunes and accompanied Bruce very nicely in his first set. Ron Bankley displayed his magnificent virtuosity on guitar as he accompanied the second set and showcased his talents as a writer/singer/arranger by performing Bruce's song Morning Papers which he reworked into a bluesy, Tom Waits-ian style. Bruce's story telling and banter combined with that particular Murdochian sense of humour had the audience enthralled all evening and almost reverential while he was singing culminating with a well deserved standing ovation. There was a palpable air of anticipation and sense of homecoming as many in the audience hadn't seen him perform for over 35 years. A number of us including Beer (Adrien), Bob Ryszkiewicz, Ron Bankley and others enjoyed a pre-concert repast replete with tapas and paella and conviviality which, combined with the fine entertainment, made for a magical, memorable, Montreal soirée. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Beer Date: 05 Jan 08 - 02:03 PM O.K. a little more on the evening. M/C was Mike Regenstreif and he did a superb job. Noah opened the show and after about 5 numbers there was a 10 minute break than Bruce came on with Noah and a young fellow on bass but his name escapes me. They then played an excellent set. Again a break than back on stage for the remainder of the evening was Bruce and Ron Bankley. Lots of great music and fun stories by Ron Bankley's excellent guitar work made the songs that much more powerful. Bruce did not disappoint his audience as he did reflect back and played a couple of his earlier numbers. Let's Lay Down Our Drums and Can I Come Across to You. Ron Bankley than surprised Bruce with a song written by Bruce. "Don't You Take Away My Heart". Ron did an amazing slightly changed rendition to the applause of a full house. Mudcat was well represented. We had Mike Regenstreif Bobad Bob Ryszkiewiez Beer Rehab Noah Zachrin Ron Bankley Bruce Murdoch There may have been others. Amos, I am listening to the show now on my RR-US430 and will see if I can figure how to download or transfer the file. To my knowledge it was also recorded by the sound technical so we will be hearing more in the next little while. |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: GUEST,Bob Ryszkiewicz Date: 04 Jan 08 - 11:45 AM Hi Kids!: I'm thinking of Bob Ryszkiewicz's posts...HEY, WAIT A MINUTE!!!. I'M Bob Ryszkiewicz! And I and I's take on this goes something like this...In fact, it goes EXACTLY like this. #1 ASK Bruce & Noah if it's O.K. #2 THIMK! (Just trying to make you laugh). All I can do to help, even though nobody asked me to, is to relate my personal experiences on the web which have been eye opening. My contacts literally go around the world, China, India, Sao Paulo, Brazil, places I can't pronounce...(sort of like you guys with my name. No, not Bob. The other one). Once an mp3 is out there, it's OUT there. Two days ago, I got an email from a radio station asking me to be sure to "tune in" as "my segment" was going to be aired on Wednesday between 3-5p.m. Duh. What segment? Chat? Huh?! So permission is always nice. And all of this is under the control of Mr. Bruce. How far does HE want to take it? Is there a plan? Are you doing a "Folk" album, or something more like Gordon Lightfoot, or James Blunt? Marketing? Tours? T-shirts? Does he want to keep it to CD's, or use Digital Distribution? I, like Ron Bankley, think that the show should be recorded. Hendrix did that. Sammy Davis Jr. did that with photography, and both left a legacy for fans around the world to enjoy. But if "wishes were horses, then men might ride..." And yeah, I've got one of those super-tekkie digital recorders about the size of a large cigarette lighter, line out, direct to computer, mp3/CD, the world...But I think it would be cool to ask permission first. Keep it to personal use. Then everybody's happy. I think all of us are hoping that Bruce hits a home run with this, and that he gets the recognition he deserves. Looking forward to the show...bob |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: bankley Date: 04 Jan 08 - 11:13 AM Thanx Amos.... I'll bring a Sony 'mini-disc' recorder, try to get a feed from the board. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Amos Date: 04 Jan 08 - 10:29 AM The RR-US430 is a voice recorder, meant for lectures and business meetings and such. However, if it is all you can get, by all means use it. Set it for SP rather than LP; it will still capture the whole concert and do so with better fidelity than the LP setting. From what I have read about it the computer interface is by USB and there is some supplied software to make text from voice recordings -- not much of a feature for our purposes. I belileve you will probably have to play the contents into the computer serially, using sound recording software such as Audacity or Sound Studio or the like. You will probably find it easier to do this in segments of songs and talk. If it turns out the software allows file management (in other words you can bring the whole session over as a sound file instead of having to replay it serially) then you'll probably end up with an MP3, AIFF, WAV or similar file. If you email me that file I can clean it up some. IF you can find a more suitable field recorder with USB connections and a built-in hard drive or flash drive that enables you to manage files and is better designed for music audio, I would recommend that as it will capture more of the overtones and very low and very high frequencies the RR-US430 might not. A |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: bankley Date: 04 Jan 08 - 09:42 AM Personally, I feel that the event ought to be recorded. What happens to it later is another story. There might be a couple of really solid segments that could be used for Bruce's new CD. Mixed in with the recent studio recordings. That's best case scenario. Otherwise there'll be a nice souvenir of the occasion. First of all, get it down and decide later. Thanks Beer for taking the time to try this. Just keep the bubbly out of the faders! |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Beer Date: 04 Jan 08 - 08:34 AM Understand all of what you are saying and I intend on asking Bruce, Ron and Noah before I do anything. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Azizi Date: 04 Jan 08 - 07:02 AM Here's my 2 cents: With regard to posting a Mp3 file of Bruce's Sala Rosa concert, with Bruce's prior approval, what friends share among themselves is one thing. Hint. Hint. But I'm thinking of Bob Ryszkiewicz's posts on this thread, and it seems to me that posting a file of any of Bruce's songs on a public forum for free is a whole different story. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Amos Date: 04 Jan 08 - 12:15 AM Thanks, Beer!! I can get the file cleaned up and posted if it is okay to do so. A |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: C. Ham Date: 03 Jan 08 - 07:25 PM It's always a treat to hear Bruce's songs and I was particularly impressed with "I Can See You Now." But Jerry seemed very awkward as an interviewer: not knowing what to ask, going on about another Bruce he used to know, stopping Bruce in the middle of an answer to say he should sing now. It was like he wasn't really prepared. |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Azizi Date: 03 Jan 08 - 12:52 PM Duh. Bob, after reading your last post, I don't see how I didn't figure out that interpretation of your "Now job guys." sentence. As to "all women are beautiful", well, they say that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. And as far as I'm concerned, all the women and men who love good music are beautiful people. ** Beer, perhaps another time. Since I'm in a folk saying mode today, here's another one-"where there's life, there's hope". :) |

I'd love to know which songs Bruce sung... Besides, I'm feeling down because not only can't I get that radio show but I can't transport myself-via a Star Trek transporter platform-to Sala Rosa in Montreal for Bruce's concert. I suppose in time that kind of invention will be standard operating procedure. Too bad there's nothing like that now. |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: GUEST,Bob Ryszkiewicz Date: 16 Dec 07 - 02:33 PM Leisure Suit: Yes, sure was a wacky time all around fashion wise...Almost forgot about the haircuts too! Business-side the 3-piece was de rigeur...Ties with Art-Nouveau paintings on them... All this swirling around with jeans and tee shirts... And isn't it curious that The Bruce Murdoch Podcast is with us today? Think about that a minute. Any time, any place, an artist can be heard by a whole new audience... And I really wonder if the kids of today heard Bruce's "Che Guevarra" or "Can I Come Across To You" released with the photo from 33&1/3, just what the reaction would be? You know, don't tell 'em when it was done, just here's this new singer, and lay it on 'em. I think that would be really interesting... As a major BM fan, I'm really looking forward to the show... bob |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: GUEST,Bob Ryszkiewicz Date: 16 Dec 07 - 12:39 PM Bankster: "If I had a wife!"(rim shot please, remember, this is sho-biz).... O.K. the rest of this should be read with a lisp: Azizi: Those guys in the photo? Only one with chains! It just isn't done... The white platforms and choice of heel, a serious fashion faux pas... And the three of them don't look like they've had any drugs in the last 4 hours! POSERS! No velour? Where are the shirts will frilled cuffs? No black corduroy? Obvously the photo is contrived by the grandchildren of the real thing who have never been there...( END-lisp) There used to be this transvestite place on Peel in Montreal where I was hijacked by some "friends" to go see a show wearing one of those outfits, described above. The lead act was dressed as a Las Vegas showgirl, heels, thong(It's the same, old thong, the one you been wearin' since we've been goin' on- a song I've been working on for a while), anyway he/she was absolutely gorgeous, and was doing a magic act... When she/he asked for a volunteer from the audience, my two friends were pointing at me behind my back. So me being the "FolkSwinger" that I was, and fearing no evil, went right on up there... Whereupon he/she said to me, "look, I know you're straight, just play along." I can't stress enough how this guy had managed to transform himself into a beautiful woman, you had to see it to believe it... Anyway, she/he pulls a rabbit out of a hat(no, really), me holding the hat with about 600 people of, how shall I put this, "alternative sexual orientation" looking on...One of the strangest sensations I've ever had...A great time...LOL. Respect to all. A fun memory. This was just outside the time by a few years, where our BM was wearing a greenish army fatigue jacket, or woodsman's coat, and we were with Lindsay Cameron(Bless) and George Gruenfeld(Bless). I think back on those times and what a privilege it was to have known them... bob |

I know. You are asking yourselves, "what the flag does this have to do with "Bruce Murdoch Podcast? " Absolutely NOTHING!!!! I'm just preparing for the PARTY that looks to be shaping up on Jan.4/08 at La Sala Rossa.... Uh Bruce. Are you going to wear a tie? Is it formal? Should I rent a tux? Or just the elk antlers and jump suit fashion statement like the last time? bob |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: bankley Date: 15 Dec 07 - 08:41 AM Well, I was planning on going to the show anyway. So it was a great treat to be asked to bring a 6-string and add my touch to some songs. A fine way to start a new year. A Murdoch concert is always special.. Also, I look forward to meeting Noah (again?) We were in touch awhile ago thru Mudcat. Be good to see you too, Beer,,, on the other side of Auld Lang Syne... R. |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Emma B Date: 14 Dec 07 - 06:23 PM I went to see Noah on his recent UK tour and he is indeed a fine guitarist and excellent singer songwriter - I'm listening to his CD "alive" right now! I wish I could be there...... Best wishes Bruce |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Amos Date: 14 Dec 07 - 06:12 PM Way to go, BRuce. It will be phenomenal. A |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Peace Date: 14 Dec 07 - 05:32 PM I wish to thank people for their many kind remarks. I will do one or two older songs, but quite truthfully, I don't really remember them. Presently--as in the past year or so--I have been very productive in terms of new songs and they have been my focus. I was fortunate for the gig in that Noah Zacharin will be the opening act. He is a remarkable guitar player/writer/singer, and he's agreed to back me on a few songs during one of my two sets. And, bonus of all bonuses, Ron Bankley will be doing eight or so songs with me. Both these guys are excellent guitarists, and their ability to back the song/singer/performer is second to none I've heard or worked with in the past. I have not been on Mudcat much because it's just been too busy in preparation for this gig and Gerry's radio show. There are also a few other things on the go in Montreal at that time including some studio time and I'm looking forward to that in a big way. I am both flattered and humbled to read the things people have written here and I will do my best not to let y'all down. Thank you again. BM |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Beer Date: 11 Dec 07 - 08:02 PM Brendy, I am not speaking for Bruce as he speaks for himself. But I have to say that you have expressed what I have been feeling for some time about what is out there and Bruce's conviction. Very well said. Thank you Beer (adrien) |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Brendy Date: 11 Dec 07 - 07:39 PM Brilliant stuff, Bruce. Excellent. That is the kind of songwriting that I would gladly sacrifice a lot of things for and I hope the gig in January sparks off more positive feedback. Conviction is a quality I don't see as much these days in a lot of the material out there; as in a lot of the performers, I may say. Maybe I'm old-fashioned (though I doubt that also), but I have said it before, and you certainly alluded to it, that you 'wear' the experiences in a song. It's a responsibility one takes on at the opening bar. You have managed to do this...., and keep doing it over the years. Fair play to you..., and keep going til you can't any more. Life is short enough... Kudos, my man. Kudos... B. |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: GUEST,Bob Ryszkiewicz Date: 27 Nov 07 - 05:12 PM Bankley: "You never know who is in the audience...." The guy in Mozambique has that tape, handed down to him, generation to generation. And has probably copied it to CD and mp3 by now. Sold it, and/or traded it for a cow.. While part of the world is moving at the speed of a mouse click, another part still draws water from the well in a wooden bucket. Thing is, they're beginning to intermingle. Lord help us if both one billion Chinese and one billion East Indians somehow get a computer for Christmas.. I'm sure most people reading this, most likely folk artists or fans have always noticed some guy in the audience with a tape recorder. Now digital. Personally, I know I've been taped, photographed, etc. and I never see it again. So, since this thread is about Bruce what's his name...he should not be surprised if some Rap Guy slices and dices and/or samples the podcast and strangely familar components of his songs start getting airplay in da Hood...Get up wid it...We drop da beat on dis nu groov...Dig it...LLLLLLL Last m-m-m-man standin'...Gimme da bounce... All da bruvas & sistas are droppin it..F-Rap(translation: Folk-Rap)... Why are you laughing? Do you think I'm some kind of performer/comedian or something...? (town-crier?) The irony of some J-Zeeee or TimbaWand or A-kin poppin' by in a S.U.V./Hummer with $4000 chrome wheels and $20,000 stereo wearing gold chains and diamond rings after their Mega-Hit brings them boatloads of cash...I hope they at least wave while they go by the Folk Singer.... Redickle-dockle you say? Remembering countless Bluesmen who never saw a dime for their labours... bob : >( : >0 : >) Smile & Laugh my friends, these are the best of times... p.s. Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: catspaw49 Date: 27 Nov 07 - 10:13 AM Geeziz.....I hate to leave this thread like this. Except for that guy singing and all, the most of it has no content at all except for Amos being nice and then getting pissed on. But remember Amos, it's better to be pissed off than pissed on BUT its a lot better to be pissed on than pissed through.....'cause that'd make you a prick. Just in case anyone opens this and is expecting stuff about fishing I feel obligated to tell them there doesn't seem to be any technique at all called podcasting. Just so it ain't a total loss, I'll add a few tips on Pitch Casting and Flip Casting, aka, "Pitchin' and Flippin'." CONTENT REMOVED - 10/26/2012: A very unpleasant person at bassresource.com sent me a 3rd notice that the world was going to end or something if I didn't remove this 5 year old post without presenting a shred of evidence that it wasn't actually here first. You might as well go dig up my dead grandfather and threaten him for telling me all the same stuff in 1976. You can read the amazingly unique, creative and copyrighted text of Pitchin' and Flippin' on their crappy web site.

Ham, I'm pretty sure that you're still gonna buy Bruce's CD once he gets one produced and/or you're still gonna purchase individual songs from that CD when Bruce puts them on iTunes or another digital download site. I know I am. Thanks again, C. Ham, for starting this thread. And thanks again, Amos, for reminding us to support Mudcat, for without this discussion forum-in addition to so many other benefits-it may have taken us a little bit longer to find out about Bruce's podcast and hear Bruce's wonderful songs. Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Beer Date: 26 Nov 07 - 08:48 PM Good to hear this Amos and C.Ham. You are both friends of Bruce and many others here on the Mud. Some of us were beginning to get concerned. Now lets get this guy Bruce to keep writing. Hay Bruce, we gotta talk soon. Your concert is getting very close. Beer (adrien) |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: GUEST,Bob Ryszkiewicz Date: 26 Nov 07 - 08:43 PM Hi Kids!: Thoughts and Perspectives from a Wandering Mind... Or, Hey, who asked you? You must consider that, while Mudcat may have the FEEL of a "private village" or home away from home, that you are still dancing with the beast called THE INTERNET. If your curiosity is aroused, I suggest you read "The Long Tail" by the editor-in-chief of WIRED magazine. Artists like Colby Caillat started out in MySpace, and due to the sheer power of something like 25,000,000 downloads, is currently running at #1 in the American Top 40. I humbly suggest that our friend Peace, how shall I phrase this? Cover thy A($)($)...and realize that some guy in Mozambique(just outside of Dallas in Cyberspace...) taking a wee wee can still have an iPod or cell phone.. Don't let the same dog bite you twice... I was under the impression that iTunes was getting 1.5 million downloads per day. After seeing Steve Jobs at MacWorld 2007, I realized my info. was off, just a lttle bit. It's 5 million, that's PER DAY(and $.99/song) and if you have a calculator, you've probably figured out that it's a LOT. Oh yeah, they have about 62% market share, which means that I am aware of at least 350 digital download sites, and there are probably way more. Amazon.com just started taking on mp3's, etc. And, as far as I know, digital downloads STILL only represent 10% of total sales after you add CD's into the equation. And then, there's YouTube... So what do these ravings from an old FolkSlinger represent? A call to smell the coffee...Wakey Wakey, Achey Breaky. (What the flag is he talking about?) The year is not 1967. Music is being bought and distributed in new ways. Your choices? Get informed. They say my people(The Poles) used to go up against tanks while carrying swords and riding horses. Courageous..but guess who won? I think you will be shocked at how many people think the music that you(the universal you) produce is more than O.K. And while 10 people on Mudcat may want it, if the Hit Goddess should cast her grace and smile upon you, and you do a "James Blunt"(Your Beautiful) please remember, they don't call it The Music BUSINESS for nothing... Unless, of course, you LIKE giving away $$$. If that applies to YOU, my mailbox is open, 24/7... (Written with the deepest consideration and concern. Respect to all...) bob |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Amos Date: 26 Nov 07 - 08:31 PM No animosity here, Bruce! I am indebted to CH for posting the thread and for making the point as he saw it. A |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Jean(eanjay) Date: 26 Nov 07 - 07:17 PM Anyone could download except me! - that's why I was so pleased to have a different chance to listen to it. I'll just do the same as Azizi. I'll make a donation to mudcat anyway. It was a lovely thought. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Peace Date: 26 Nov 07 - 07:16 PM Guys, if I had been using my head this situation would never have happened. Let's forget the idea. People can download and burn to a CD for themselves. We're talking about maybe 10 people wanting one of these things, and I see no point in any acrimony about it all. I'd hate it for there to be any animosity between Amos and C Ham over MY stupidity. Let it go. You are both good people, so please, stop. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: C. Ham Date: 26 Nov 07 - 06:54 PM Amos, It's not about my code of ethics. I told you what *I* think is the right thing to do ethically, and from what I understand, legally. But, what the hell, I'm not a lawyer, or a cop, and what guides me ethically is not necessarily what guides you ethically. Don't do anything on my account. Make your own decision based on the information that's available to you. If you think making the CD available to someone who donates to Mudcat is the right thing to do, then do it. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Amos Date: 26 Nov 07 - 06:34 PM C., Well, okay, then. I am not trying to flaunt any laws, and am not even interested in flaunting your code of ethics, so I will withdraw this offer. I will be sending Bruce a few copies, though with which he can do as he wishes, as far as I am concerned... A |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Azizi Date: 26 Nov 07 - 06:00 PM Bruce, though I'd love to have a Bruce Murdoch CD of your new songs to listen to sooner rather than later, I'm willing to wait until your CD is produced and then buy it. With regard to donations to Mudcat, knowing how much you care about this forum, I bet you probably were going to donate some copies of your CD to the Mudcat auction anyway. And I bet they'll bring in more than the stated price of the CD. All this to say, in my opinion, Bob Ryszkiewicz said it best: Bruce, "RECORD THAT ALBUM!!!!!!" |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: C. Ham Date: 26 Nov 07 - 05:51 PM Amos, I don't know the laws in the U.S., but in Canada you can legally record something off the radio (or a podcast) and copy it onto CD for your own personal use. You can legally copy CDs for your own personal use. No problem about that. You can get into hot water when going beyond personal use. Don't get me wrong. I want everybody to hear the podcast. That's why I posted the link in the first place. But there are legal questions, and to my mind, ethical questions. Seeing Bruce's response to my raising the issue, I think he agrees. And BTW, I myself have burned the podcast onto a CD for my own personal use and have played it four or five times already. |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Emma B Date: 26 Nov 07 - 05:36 PM Please put my name down for that Bruce - I'd love to be there in person. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Peace Date: 26 Nov 07 - 05:32 PM My apologies--I'm the one who should have know better. Thanks, C Ham. I was NOT thinking. However, instead of that, possibly we could do something similar after X-mas. I expect to have a dozen or so songs that are OK from the gig in Montreal. If it's OK with Amos I'll send them to him and he can do something similar and it will require no one's permisdsion but mine. If that's OK, then let's do it that way instead. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Amos Date: 26 Nov 07 - 05:30 PM I'm not selling it, Sir Ham. I'm offering a copy of a radio broadcast, and I'm not getting paid to do it either, for a charitable cause. But if it is going to raise hackles to do so, despite the fact that it was broadcast over air and over web, freely, then I can kibosh the whole idea just as easily. No-one has yet made their donations, although there have been inquiries. Anyone could download, edit and burn the CD for themselves without such permissions. Let me check on your proposition with Mike and see how it stands. I am happy to help the 'Cat, and I am happy to promote a rare talent like Bruce's, but in a few minutes of posting time, you have suddenly added a lot more hours of work to the whole idea than I am willing to spend on it right now. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: C. Ham Date: 26 Nov 07 - 04:39 PM Amos, I don't want to throw water on the fire of the CD, but ethically and legally you need permission from several other parties besides Bruce. I would suggest that you also secure permission from these folks and companies whose work may be protected under various laws before distributing the CD in exchange for money (even if it is as a donation to a worthy cause like Mudcat): 1) Mike Regenstreif 2) Bill Staines 3) Penny Lang 4) Red House Records 5) Borealis Records 6) Elektra Records 7) Radio Canada International 8) CKUT Radio. I doubt that any of them would object, but securing permission is the right thing to do. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Jean(eanjay) Date: 26 Nov 07 - 04:14 PM This is a great idea - thanks to both of you. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast on CD From: Amos Date: 26 Nov 07 - 02:25 PM With the blessing of Mister Bruce (Peace) Murdoch, a privately produced CD of this broadcast is now available to Mudcat members who contribute $10.00 to the Mudcat maintenance fund. The CD has the songs and commentary divided into tracks, and some cleanup done on minor clicks and hisses from earlier media. To get your copy of what may be a historic recording event: 1. Send $10.00 to Max. 2. Send me a PM with your name and address, affirming that you have completed step 1. Regards, Amos |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: GUEST,John Young Date: 26 Nov 07 - 12:57 PM Bruce, Peace, Mr. Murdoch, Thanks so much for posting the lyrics to "Fool Like Me." If it's not too much trouble, could you post again with the guitar chords. John Young (New York) |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: bankley Date: 26 Nov 07 - 11:17 AM Hi Peace, you'd enjoy Steve Earle's latest.."Washington Square Serenade"... i got the package with the DVD for $15 at Music World(they're shutting down 200 stores in Jan.) another casualty of downloading.. anyhow, the DVD lasts 32 min., interviews in the Village, where he now lives, and esp. live performances, voice and guitar/mandolin all mic-ed, at the funky Electric Ladyland Studio... really simple and solid... the CD is less rocky than his last couple of outings, but he explains all of that in the interview.. "Goodbye Guitar Town" nice package all around.... see you later... R. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Jean(eanjay) Date: 26 Nov 07 - 08:30 AM I'm feeling sorry for myself because I'm having ongoing computer problems and haven't been able to listen to it yet. I'm not giving in though! |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: catspaw49 Date: 26 Nov 07 - 05:14 AM Well I opened this thread hoping to learn some new fishing technique. Although I was unfamiliar with podcasting, I assumed it was another way to get the lure out there like flip casting. I couldn't find anything like that but what I did find was a radio program with some guy singin' and pickin' and all that. No fishing stuff of any kind. I mean that's okay because I could give less than a shit about fishing except for the cooking and eating part. As far as the radio thing went, this Bruce guy seemed pretty good and all. I dunno' though 'cause you always have to keep an eye on that type since most of them are friggin' navel gazers. Now while this Murdoch seems okay, my advice would be to listen to him every chance you get to make sure he's not staring at his bellybutton! I like him but I hate to be disappointed so I'm gonna' do that myself. Here's another thing though......I can't figure out why the hell Peace acts like he has something to do with the whole thing. And then that comment to Amos about their combined ages being 12 decades or something? I don't see the big deal there since either one of them could assure what......maybe seven or eight or more individually? I do think Peace and Amos are probably adept at identifying navel gazers since both are generally staring at some anatomical part. Peace seems to have the same view as a colonoscopy camera whereas Amos has been unable to find his willie for over thirty years. Anyway, I'd give this Murdoch character the benefit of the doubt and just enjoy what he does which is pretty damn good and hope he does more. Ignore anything Peace has to say......What the hell does he know? Say, does anyone know anything about podcasting? Spaw |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Jim Lad Date: 26 Nov 07 - 02:03 AM I enjoyed that very much indeed! |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Azizi Date: 26 Nov 07 - 12:17 AM What Amos said. But... Bruce, I would have loved for that podcast to also include your old song "Rough Night In Jericho" and your newer song "Last Man Standing". But I'm glad to know that more people are hearing those other wonderful songs of yours that are featured in that podcast. I can't pick a favorite...well maybe "Come Across To You" or "Plains of Jericho" or "I Sit and Count The Stars At Night" or "I Keep You In My Heart"... Well, that goes to show you how difficult it is to choose which of your songs speaks to me. Bruce, kudos to ya, and keep on keepin on!!! |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Janie Date: 25 Nov 07 - 09:51 PM What other's have already said! I just got a chance to listen. Thank you, Mike, for putting this together, Ham, for letting us know about it. Bruce, I'm so glad you started writing and sharing your music again! Janie |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Peace Date: 25 Nov 07 - 06:11 PM So much of this would not have been possible without the help of your missus and you, Amos. The only thing I can figure is that you and I have GOT to sit down for a week and write a few. Being as how our collective age is oner a dozen decades, and being as how neither of us is getting any younger--well, I'm not, anyway--let's ponder that, huh? |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Amos Date: 25 Nov 07 - 05:56 PM Bruce: This small token of richly deserved renown should multiply and produce fame and recognition. I wish this on you, so that you have only the very best problems to worry about henceforth!! :D Well done, man. A |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: Peace Date: 25 Nov 07 - 05:37 PM Thank you all. The show came as a surprise to me. I received a link to it from Mike R on November 22. I think Mike likely didn't talk to me about it beforehand because he knows I'd have begged off having anything from the "SSP" played on the air--not that I do or should have any control over that. With luck I'll have some studio time in Montreal this trip and I hope to get a dozen songs recorded--voice and guitar, that's it. After years of dickin' around with electric instruments, and having determined late in life that for me they complicate what should be a fairly simple straight-forward process--that of recording one voice and one guitar--I will simply get the songs down. I don't really know what direction to take after that. I have two CD's worth of material that's new, and IMO they represent the 'best stuff' I've written. It isn't folk; it is acoustic 'kinda-rock'. However, I have taken my folkish-foundations and made them fundamental to this set of songs. With deep humility, I wish to thank John Young for his very kind remark. Because the words have presented a problem for some listeners in the past (well, three of the seventeen, anyway) I will add them here. Also, John, the Mr isn't necessary, but thanks. "Fool Like Me" Scores of prophets growing old Please take Elijah the rusted chains that hold Poor Judas to his misery It seems so obvious he needs sympathy Of ancient history And a fool like me Lonesome lover lost his bride Stopped his heart and so they called it suicide Judged by pompous vanity I guess they're right, but I have to disagree 'Cause if a fool be he He's a fool like me And care on the line It feels good to talk with a friend of mine If you gotta go I'd like to be To be the first to know Pleasant dreams though twilight falls It deserts the prison where the hobo's footsteps call Prime ministers of treachery Locked him up because he had no pedigree But it matters not says he He's a fool like me I wrote your song just yesterday And I tore it up because the song got in the way Was just a way to let you see Another chapter in a cloudy mystery Of vagrant effigies And a fool like me "Locked him up because he had no pedigree" Footnote (from Wikipedia): 'Pedigree (from the French, pied de grue, lit. 'crane's foot') is the name of the legal principle that allows a witness to testify as to his name and certain family details under the American and English common law concepts of evidence with no additional foundation. Otherwise, establishing the identity of the witness would waste much of the court (and the jury)'s time. Pedigree is, like many old rules of evidence, either a rule or an exception, depending upon how it is used.' |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: C. Ham Date: 23 Nov 07 - 08:15 AM Bruce, It sounds to me like you were playing a nylon string guitar on the Singer-Songwriter Project songs. Am I correct in that assumption? |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch podcast From: mike gouthro Date: 23 Nov 07 - 12:02 AM Mike R. sure put together a great collection of Bruce's songs. And Penny Lang's version of Come Across was superb. I always thought Come Across should have had the same kind of success on other artists' albums that Heart Like A Wheel and Louise did. Bruce has really good songs and also one of the finest voices I've heard through the years. |
