I was watching Jay Leno tonight and there was this singer dancing and prancing all over the stage shaking her hips and thinking she could sing.

Elvis got away with those gyrations because HE COULD SING. Singers please take note. Gyrating is not singing. If you think you are as good as Elvis - LEARN TO SING FIRST.

I know, I know. But this is a serious problem with modern singers. How many do you see that dress in slinky clothes and prance around over the stage and think that that is good enough to make them a hit?

Unfortunately, in many cases they are right. Ability to sing seems to come well down the list of elements needed for a hit. I'm not sure it isn't an actual disadvantage these days.
