I am trying to locate information on an English Folk Group The Five Penny Piece. Especially their music written around Manchester etc. I can find no listings for them in any of the search engines but I do know they made recordings a few years ago. Can any one help?

I don't know anything about them, but I picked up a couple of their song books at a car boot many years ago.

Do an AltaVista search: "Fivepenny Piece" Note the quotes and "Fivepenny" all one word. There are some sites there which mention the band. Still performing I think. There may be other links there I did not follow. Good Huntin"

Thank you Guys for your replies ( hey! I'm a poet). I am a member of a local amateur (unpaid) operatic society here in Dunedin New Zealand. I am in the process of writing a show for a Theatre Restaurant part of which is based on life around Lancashire thats why I require some of the songs the Fivepenny Piece recorded. Such as "Stalybridge Market On A Saturday Night, "Boltons Yard", 'I'm Po-Fagged" If anyones got the music of these songs and any others I would dearly like to discuss it further. Peter

"Bowton's yard" was a much earlier poem. I first heard it from a friend, recited in dialect. I've got a book of fivepenny piece's songs somewhere, and I'll dig it out if you don't find the songs elsewhere. I saw the band perform a few times, as I was born and brought up in Manchester. Hwyl.

I was born and lived thirty years in Manchester. I spent a lot of time in Harry Boardman's folk club. Harry was a great singer and dialect speaker. Bowton's Yard being one of the songs he sang.

His recordings have recently been released on CD:
Topic Records TSCD 485
The CD is a compilation from two albums Deep Lancashire & Owdham Edge.
(thanks to Mark Dowding who emailed me with this info recently. I've not had chance to get the CD yet.)

You could also try this site for Lancastrian Ex-pats.

AndyG I can't believe it, but I had forgotten all about Harry's club. I can't even remember where it was. Iremember the MSG very well, saw all the greats there, Carthy/Swarbrick and The Houghton Weavers being the ones I remember best. Harry's club was at The Unicorn, Market Street. They had the interesting habit of locking the doors at 10:30 on Saturday night to stop the inmates from Yates Wine Lodge coming in when it closed. :)
And I think the site I gave a link to above is run by one of the original members of The Houghton Weavers.

Colin Radcliffe of Fivepenny Piece was head of the art department at Ashton College when I was there in the 70's...I'm pretty sure there's a "best of" CD available. Good luck!

mfp (Music For Pleasure - psrt of EMI I think) brought ot a CD "The Very Best Of The Fivepenny Piece" in 1998. This seems to be their ref. no. 7243 4 94354 2 1. I picked it up in HMV in Dublin last year so you should be able to get this fairly easily. Perhaps Peter, in this vein, you might also want to look at any Gary & Vera Aspey recordings.

Bernard Wrigley was a member for a while, his site might be worth checking out for more Lancashire songs. A current member is a character called John Eatock and the band still perform sporadically. For Lancy songs also check out Oldham Tinkers (the governers) and for a more up to date variant, The Family Mahone.

I'm trying to find the lyrice for 'Down our street' to teach my grand children. I can remeber as far as 'Daisy in the Dairy, real nice girl, gets all the local fellas in a whirl.... but that's as far as it goes. Can anyone help?
