Black Umfolosi 5 were stunning playing to a packed room and got the most wonderful reception for a totally exhilarating performance. You can see some photos of them in action at the Royal Oak starting at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/photo.php?pid=4026803&id=554859886

Now, after two weeks of American guests plus this Zimbabwean outfit we look forward to something a bit more local next Thursday.

June 10th * £6.00 * PETA WEBB & KEN HALL
Peta & Ken's artistic ability and warm, informative approach and their visible enthusiasm for singing have deservedly won many friends and admirers.

You can see some photos of them in action at the Royal Oak

Only if you join Facebook. Why not post them somewhere where everyone can see them? There are plenty of options.

Thanks,

Ed

When I created the album that the photos that the Black Umfolosi are part of - it is called Club Evening Photos - under the "Privacy" choice, I went for "Make these photos available to everyone" which should mean that by clicking on the above link anyone should be able to see the photos. I certainly can without logging on to Facebook.

Any other comments from anyone about the availability of this photo album?

Sunday 3pm - England vs. Germany vs. The monthly Sunday afternoon session in the bar of the Royal Oak in Lewes

....and the loser is.... the session. A television has been mounted behind the bar (fortunately, only for the duration of the World Cup tournament) and, understandably, the landlady wants to show the match.

Ah well! We have still got Keith Kendrick & Sylvia Needham upstairs in the clubroom tonight and Bayou Seco next Thursday. Whooppee!

Vic - typical, isn't it? Footie takes precedence over everything else at the moment! Condolences.

Waifs and strays from Lewes and environs are most welcome at the evening session (same Sunday, 8pm) at the Bull at Ditchling, where I'll be co-hosting with Julian Burton. Traditional tunes, rags, reels, airs, jazz and blues await those in the bar - where there is NO television.

Fliss, we'll be glad to see you at Tim Laycock's workshop, but I should point out that the workshops are run by the Lewes Saturday Folk Club rather than the Royal Oak.

There are two excellent folk clubs in Lewes, both meeting every week and both booking broadly traditional performers.

The two are collaborating to put on the first Lewes Folk Festival from 7-10 October this year - see the website for booking forms and the programme. There's an attractive discount on pre-booked tickets.

Just had a phone call from Dave Watts of Elsie's Band who we had booked at the Royal Oak in Lewes for tomorrow night (16/12/10)

With the weather forecast for our area for Thursday saying:-

There is a risk of widespread ice developing following clearance southwards of a band of rain and snow. Wet surfaces across southern parts of England and Wales will be particularly prone in the evening as temperatures drop quickly.
... and several band members living down side roads in the part of Kent that always gets the snow, they have decided that it would not be sensible to travel to Lewes tomorrow night. (They might get there... but) they might not get home!)

As things stand we plan to have a free admission Open Night but if the snow really comes down that may have to change.
Updates here.

In spite of the fact that the guests could not come at the last minute, last night turned out to be a really enjoyable evening at the Royal Oak; thanks to everyone who came and took part..... and they have fixed the boiler so the clubroom was warm!

On Page 12 of the listings section of today's Guide section in The Guardian it lists the Archie Fisher gig, saying of it:-

Lewes
* Archie Fisher
Celtic folk singer/songwriter
Royal Oak
Station Street
Lewes
(01273 478124) 8pm, £6.00

Then on the "Pick of the Week" on the first page of the Listings it gives five gigs out of the hundreds that are listed including this one and says of it -

ARCHIE FISHER Royal Oak, Lewes, Thursday. Lynchpin of the 1960s British folk revival plays a low-key show. Fine soft-voiced singer/songwriter as covered by Fairport Convention.

Hmm, not sure that I agree entirely with their blurb, but I am very pleased by with their choosing it..... sounds like the place to be on Thursday!
