Next Sunday afternoon, we have our monthly song and tune session in the bar of the Royal Oak. This runs from 3.30 to 5.30pm. Come earlier to have one of the pub's excellent Sunday roasts - 2 for £10.

For the last two months our substantial body of local enthusiastic singers and musicians have been joined by excellent singers from outside our area. In May it was Marion Button and in June it was The Claque.

Once again we are very pleased that next Thursday's gig with JERRY EPSTEIN & RALPH BODINGTON is mentioned in The Guide section of today's The Guardian

Once again, we have to point out that the wrong telephone contact number is given.....

Once again, I will be emailing them to thank them for the entry but asking if in future they can give the correct phone number. It should be 01273 478124

Surely one of our best nights ever!

The Magnolia Sisters were magnificent last night and once again the "House Full" notices had to go up fairly early on. Those who did manage to get in were treated to a really outstanding performance by this vibrant quartet. The reception that they were given was tremendous.

Jeannie Harris had driven down from East Anglia to Sussex just to see them and she gave a beautiful treatment of the two songs that she offered us.

We have more top American visitors next week with the visit of Ralph Bodington and Jerry Epstein -

July 23rd * £6.00 * JERRY EPSTEIN & RALPH BODINGTON
Jerry has been involved in traditional music for 40 years and was director of the New York Eisteddfod. Ralph is a superb performer of banjo tunes and ballads from the old-time Southern mountain culture.

For an extended sample of what each of them sounds like, go to the following websites -

http://www.minstrelrecords.com/bodington.htm for Ralph (Eight tracks)

http://www.minstrelrecords.com/epstein.htm for Jerry (Seven tracks)

Here is a brief review of a performance by The Magnolia Sisters on their current debut UK tour, written by Des Bowring:-

Oh my goodness I've just seen the Magnolia Sisters in Bristol and they are bloody fantastic!

Everything you expect from a Cajun band was here - fine and swinging playing that had that strange elusive edge of joy and sadness - the fiddle and accordion and keening vocals were pure joy to listen or dance to. Such likable musicians who immediately established a rapport with the audience - what more could you want?

Please see this band on tour - they are delightful. One of the gigs of the year.

You can see them on Thursday at the Royal Oak in Lewes.

A huge thank you to Leon Rosselson and Robb Johnson for a magnificent, stimulating and life-affirming concert lat night. This was played to an enthusiastic capacity crowd who were a mixture of our club regulars and those who had come to see The Liberty Tree event as part of the Tom Paine and Lewes festival.

Next Thursday should be huge as well with the visit of the world's leading female Cajun band - THE MAGNOLIA SISTERS from Eunice in Louisiana making their first ever European tour. Have a look at their tour schedule at http://www.magnoliasisters.com/Mag_tour_europe.jpg and you will see that their appearance at the Royal Oak in Lewes next Thursday is their only appearance in a small intimate venue; all the others are at large concert halls or big festivals:-

An amazing coup for us as we present the leading female Cajun band from Louisiana - Ann Savoy, Jane Vidrine, Anya Burgess, and Lisa Reed.

Gordon Tyrrall gave a blistering performance with scintillaring singing and playing last night - and this in spite of the tropical heat and humidity in the clubroom last night which made performing a real difficulty. Fortunately a huge thunderstorm in the night has cleared the air a bit.

Tomorrow, the Tom Paine & Lewes festival starts in the town and next Thursday our contribution to it will be the a performance of "The Liberty Tree".

I know that I keep saying this, but it's true! We had a really great night last night with Duck Soup. They were on great form. I had said in the publicity that you would see some instruments that you would not expect to hear in a folk club and that was certainly true. If you would like to see photos of Adam playing three of them, then click here.

Next week we are privileged to be able to present a group that counts as one of its membersTom Paley, one of the icons of the folk revival on both sides of the Atlantic. -

June 25th * £6.00 * THE NEW DEAL STRING BAND
One of the legendary figures of the revival of interest in Old Timey music, Tom Paley, is joined by his son Ben and long-time associate, Joe Locker.

Currently, you can here The New Deal String Band performing "Penney's Farm" by clicking on The Royal Oak MySpace site where it is one of ten tracks by guests coming to the club:-

The New Deal String Band - "Penney's Farm - (June 25th)
Gordon Tyrrall - "Jessie" (July 2nd)
Leon Rosselson - "Jumbo The Elephant" (July 9th) [with Robb Johnson]
The Magnolia Sisters - "Honky Tonk Boogie" (July 16th)

Tony Hall's wonderful inventive melodeon playing, his fine singing and his outrageous idiosyncratic humour were hugely enjoyed by a large crowd at the Royal Oak last night. Why that man is not one of the top attractions on the scene, I'll never know; he is a unique entertainer.

Looking forward to next Thursday:-
June 18th * £5.00 * DUCK SOUP
A fascinating and different way of interpreting traditional song and dance tunes with some instruments that you would not expect to hear in a folk club with Adam Bushell, Ian Kearey & Dan Quinn

What terrific support we had for one of our very occasional Open Nights yesterday. Looking at the number of performers that were turning up, I decided to operate without an interval last night, and by limiting each act to two items each, we just managed to fit everyone in by five past eleven. Thanks to the huge number of supporters who can along last night and to the performers for the exceptionally high standard of their spots in a wide variety of styles.

Next Thursday, we start our Irish Season which lasts for the whole of May. Firstly, with a man whose songs have been the subject of two recent threads on Mudcat - "The Miltown Cockroach" and "King Lear".

May 7th * £5.00 * CON FADA Ó DRISCEOIL *** Irish Season ***
One of Ireland's foremost comic song writers in the traditional style in recent decades and a very fine button accordion player

Thanks to Chris Foster for another outstanding performance last night. Looking forward to next week, please note that we have been forced to change the advertised appearance by THE PALINKA BAND who have beeb forced to cancel because of ill - health. Instead, we will be having one of our very rare Open Nights

April 30th OPEN NIGHT - FREE ADMISSION

This night was originally advertised as an evening with the exciting new Hungarian band, The Palinka Band. However, one of their members has become seriously ill and has returned to Hungary and the band have been forced to cancel the appearance. As we have not been able to come up with a replacement that would be even a vaguely suitable replacement for a vibrant young Eastern European female quartet, we have decided to hold one of our occasional free admission Open Nights and give the many performers who support our venture more of a chance to sing and play that they very limited opportunities that they get on our guest nights.

Also we would love to see performers and listeners at our monthly tune and song session in the bar of the Royal Oak this coming Sunday - all welcome.

Station Street, Lewes
Song & Tune Session
The Last Sunday of the month - 3.30-5.30

The second of our monthly Sunday afternoon song and tune sessions at the Royal Oak. All are welcome to come along and join in, play, sing or just listen. The intention is that singers and musicians should get an equal part in the proceedings.
Please forward this message to anyone that you think would be interested.
best wishes
Vic & Tina

On another thread, Valmai Goodyear wrote:-

Emily and Hazel Askew were excellent at the Royal Oak in Lewes last night.

And Mike Ainscough replied:-

Indeed they were.

I can only add that the whole evening gave me a total buzz. Lovely performance from the guests, super enthusiastic and responsive audience and some great and varied floor spots. (And Valmai and Mike were amongst them!)

Next Thursday should also be thoroughly enjoyable with.....

Apl 23rd * £5.00 * CHRIS FOSTER
One of the finest singers and most thoughtful inventive guitar accompanists of English folk songs. A rare chance to catch him on tour from his new home in Iceland.

THE PALINKA BAND April 30th CANCELLED

24th March - We have just received this message from Maria of The Palinka Band:-

Sorry we have not contacted you for a long time, but there has been some unfortunate incidents. A member of the band, Katalin, became sick and had to return to Hungary for the appropriate cure. She is not likely to recover and hence return to the UK earlier than May. We all hope she gets better soon after which our band can continue playing, but while she is sick we can not make any gigs. This also means that we have to cancel the performance at The Royal Oak on 30 April.
We are really sorry to cancel this performance and I hope we can work together in the future. All members of the band is really sad to have this unintended break and we hope you understand.

A replacement will be announced here as soon as it has been arranged and a new date arranged for The Palinka Band as soon as that is possible.

Apologies to the very many people who turned up only to see the HOUSE FULL sign up before the event started last night. Those who did get in were treated to a quite magnificent performance by NORMA WATERSON, MARTIN CARTHY and CHRIS PARKINSON.

The advice we had given to the very many people who had phoned or emailed about the evening was if you are in the pub before 7.30 when the doors open, you will be able to get in and I am glad to say that this was the case for both capacity nights, this week and last week. It is also the advice that I would give to people who want to see DAVE SWARBRICK (March 19th) and LEON ROSSELSON (March 26th)

In the meantime we know that we are in for great things next Thursday:-

Mar 12th * £5.00 * JIM & LYNETTE ELDON
The pride of Yorkshire! Jim is rightly regarded as one of the icons of English music with his singing and fiddling and Lynette is a champion clog dancer.
