Subject: RE: BS: How do I copy a you tube video? From: Bill D Date: 27 Nov 07 - 06:10 PM well, the short answer is, IF you have viewed it, you have a copy on your computer. What you need to do is find it and rename it....and they don't make it really easy. That's where the long answer comes in. Where it is located depends on the browser you use. It is 'somewhere' in the temporary cache, and will likely be deleted - either when you close the browser, or as pre-set cache limits are reached. It is VERY much worthwhile to learn the details of where your browser cache is, for various reasons. (In Opera, all I need to do is type "opera:cache" into the address box, and it brings up the contents, so I can save the one I need.) Firefox may need to be accessed thru the "documents & settings" folder. I do not attempt to use IE.... One way is to type 'kiss' into the URL for the video right before "youtube" as in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qw-fy39OmXI http://www.kissyoutube.com/watch?v=qw-fy39OmXI This may work, but it may only offer you a program to DO the downloading. Finally, this Google Search has offers of programs which 'may' work....I had a couple which did before Google bought YouTube, but they made some changes. I don't bother since I learned to navigate the cache. Sorry it's not any simpler....blame Google. |

Subject: RE: BS: How do I copy a you tube video? From: Bill D Date: 27 Nov 07 - 06:32 PM right! I thought it was similar to Opera, but hadn't looked recently. |
Subject: RE: BS: How do I copy a you tube video? From: Bill D Date: 27 Nov 07 - 06:34 PM note: the file you want is probably renamed to some coded thing like xz8wvhg9.tmp recent date/time & size are clues. Name it waht you wish & move it. |
Subject: RE: BS: How do I copy a you tube video? From: Donuel Date: 28 Nov 07 - 11:31 AM Cool I once found the cache on my old comoputer and it had almost every web page I had ever looked at which allowed me to recover a few things even after I was banned for "inflamatory" cartoons I made. Now to find the temp cache here,,, |
Subject: RE: BS: How do I copy a you tube video? From: JohnInKansas Date: 29 Nov 07 - 10:13 AM IE, in WinXP puts common browser files in: "C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files" There's a separate folder for each user, usually. Cookies are in the same folder, although they're also "mirrored" in a separate "cookies" folder. Often, when the art museums block saving a picture, it would be easy enough to pick the file out of the mess (although of course we'd never do that); but finding a YouTube (or Flash) file apparently isn't trivial, and with Flash there's the suspicion that the files are "sometimes elsewhere" as in the program folder for the reader(?). I haven't made much of an effort to investigate since my connection doesn't support watching YouTube much, and Flash files hardly ever have any "content" that's really interesting. John |
Subject: RE: BS: How do I copy a you tube video? From: clueless don Date: 29 Nov 07 - 10:15 AM Something that MAY work (I haven't tried it) in Internet Explorer under Windows XP is to click "Tools" at the top of the screen, and then go down and click "Internet Options...". In the resulting window, click "Settings...", and in the resulting window click "View Files...". The cache (strictly speaking, it is the "temporary internet files") should come up. As I say, I haven't tried this with a YouTube video. But it has worked for me for saving, for example, pictures and comic strips. Don |
Subject: RE: BS: How do I copy a you tube video? From: JohnInKansas Date: 29 Nov 07 - 10:34 AM c don - So far as I know you can't copy from the "view files," although that may work. It's pretty easy to find the Temporary Internet folder. You will probably have to turn on the "View Hidden and System Files" option in Win Explorer. If you link to the folder you'll probably get a "WARNING - hidden and unknown dangers lurk in this location areyousureyoureallywanttoopenthisfolder.!!!!!" (The warning appears to be the same when you open any folder with they SYSTEM attrib set, and specific wording may vary.) If you've been browsing for a while since the last cleanup, you'll probably find a few thousand files - about half(?) cookies - in the folder. Do the cleanup before you go to the site you want to steal from, and the "finding" may be a little easier. John |

Subject: RE: BS: How do I copy a you tube video? From: Bill D Date: 29 Nov 07 - 10:23 PM In my biased opinion...(from having used 5-6 of the best free ones), the best all-round player (for PCs)right now is THE KMPlayer ...not just plain 'KMPlayer' from KDE This is a freeware made in Korea, but with forums in several languages. It plays 'almost' everything and doesn't crash. It does FLVs just fine, and RealMedia too! |
