Hi guys I have no idea what I have found here at this website but you might be able to help, I trying to find out if there is a Slim Dusty song which makes mention of a "lily" or has "lily" in the title? Lily could be a person a flower, anything.

G'day DusteePintos,

I hoped to find your song with a "smart search" 'Slim Dusty' / Lily / Song ... but there are so many songs from Slim's long and prolific musical life!

As well, most of the sites I did open, were commercial sites selling CDs - and only a few had track lists ... and most were accessible only individually. That means opening lots of separate CD track lists ...

Maybe some really good Slim Dusty fan will look in ... and know the song you seek - as long as we keep the thread 'refreshed', by posting to it before it drops of the default 24 hours of display!

Regards,

Bob Bolton

Bob -

there is a set of Sheet Music books - each of which contained several songs - which was to cover ALL of the songs he did in his career - they started to come out before he died - if you can get the master index for that, it would help.

G'day Fooles,

But are they on the www?

I couldn't pick up anything like that searching on: Slim Dusty / sheet music (books) / index. (Nor on: Slim Dusty / lyrics ... and several variations.)

All the sites are hard-nosed commercial - in best C & W tradition ... none of this folkie "share it all round" stuff!

Regard(les)s,

Bob

Bob - they were commercial products - saw the first in the promised full series in a Toowoomba music shop few some months before he died.

I buy many things, but these days my funds are very limited.

could it be the Water Lily (words by Henry Lawson) - Slim Dusty sang a few Henry lawson poems that he or others put to music

       A LONELY young wife
       In her dreaming discerns
       A lily-decked pool
       With a border of ferns,
       And a beautiful child,
       With butterfly wings,
Trips down to the edge of the water and sings:
       'Come, mamma! come!
       'Quick! follow me—
'Step out on the leaves of the water-lily!'
       And the lonely young wife,
       Her heart beating wild,
       Cries, 'Wait till I come,
'Till I reach you, my child!'
       But the beautiful child
       With butterfly wings
Steps out on the leaves of the lily and sings:
       'Come, mamma! come!
       'Quick! follow me!
'And step on the leaves of the water-lily!

And the wife in her dreaming
       Steps out on the stream,
       But the lily leaves sink
And she wakes from her dream.
       Ah, the waking is sad,
For the tears that it brings,
And she knows 'tis her dead baby's spirit that sings:
       'Come, mamma! come!
       'Quick! follow me!
'Step out on the leaves of the water-lily!'

G'day freda,

Slim certainly set a number of Lawson's poems to tunes. Chris Kempster's The Songs of Henry Lawson, Viking O'Neil / Penguin Books Australia Ltd, 1989 has 18 different Lawson songs includes set by Slim ... but not The Water Lily.

That's not to say that Slim did not set a version of that one ... but I don't know of it.

Regards,

Bob

Errr...k!

My typing fingers (well, obviously the left one ...) need bi-focals ... That should have read:
"... has 18 different Lawson songs included set by Slim ... but not The Water Lily."

Anyway, it would have been a good excuse to refresh the thread ... while we wait for someone with the encyclopaedic grasp needed to remeber every one of Slim's songs! (Except that Celtaddict did that while I being interrupted by work that couldn't wait until after lunch!)

Regards,

Bob

Even if he didn't set a tune to Lawson's poem The Water Lily, he might have sung it. Martin Wyndham-Reid recorded a lovely version of it - I can't lay my hands on it to check who set the tune to it.

G'day McGrath,

I'd say the odds are pretty good that anything Slim turned his music and singing talents to would have been a candidate for recording. He probably still holds the record for sales of records in Australia ... and was always the consumate professional singer.

I would be keen to see / hear anything that some Slim Dusty fan might turn up ... but I don't see The Water Lily as appealing to any A & R man of Slim's era.

Regards,

Bob
