Finding a favorite is really tough. Just about every song mentioned above that I'm familiar with could make it on my personal favorites list. I really like "Life is like a mountain railroad". Of course there's something about hearing "I sing because I'm Happy, I sing because I'm free. His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me" that hits one of those places you didn't know existed until you hear a certain phrase of music.

One of my all-time favourite gospel songs: Will There be Any Stars in my Crown Not my favourite version; I love the one with Alison Kraus and The Cox Family but I couldn't find it.

My preferences run to Green Pastures, Angel Band, Jesus Met the Woman (At the Well), Working on a Building (as long as it's done bluesy), Somewhere Listening for My Name, I'll Fly Away, I Saw the Light. For congregational hymns I like Revive Us Again, Bringing in the Sheaves and Shall We Gather At the River.

Speaking of Rev. Davis, let's not forget about "Sampson & Delilah"/"If I Had My Way." Such a great piece of music on its own terms, I often forget that it has a religious theme.

Ah, thanks for the link to that fine old southern band doing gospel.

More favorites I am reminded of: Farther Along, Angel Band, Down to the River to Pray.


There's also a great blues type gospel, forgot the name of the song (sigh..for a change) but there's a line about    "I'm going down to the river, and I won't have to die no more" I first heard it sung & played by Danny Kalb but believe it's originally a Rev. Gary Davis song.

I have rediscovered hymns of late, so this tread is very exciting.

In addition to several of those already mentioned, I am currently enjoying playing:

A Beautiful Life
Lilly of the Valley
Beulah Land
Softly and Tenderly
Farther Along
Angel Band

Years ago, Ry Cooder did an instrumental version of a tune "There will be a Happy Meeting." It may have been the JAZZ album. I'd REALLY love to see a proper four harmony hymnal version of this if anyone in cyberland knows of a source.

In recent years, "Wade in the Water" has taken on a little extra resonance for me and many fellow Orleanians. I may never forget a particularly mournful rendition at the weekly Musican's Mass at St. Anna's, just outside the French Quarter, one recent Wednesday evening. "God's gonna trouble the waters," indeed...

Sam Cooke's "Hem of His Garment" (written and recorded near the end of his tenure with the Soul Stirrers, just before he "went secular") has long been a personal favorite. The essentially wordless chorus truly makes a joyful noise. (I've seen transcriptions that give the lyric of the refrain as "Oh Lord, Oh Lord...," but it sounds to me more like "Whoa-oh, whoa-oh...")

I love "Drifting to close to the Shore" , and Tim and Molly O'Brien's version of " Down to the river to pray". I, also, have a soft spot for a number of songs Hank Williams wrote/sang e.g. "I Saw the Light" and " I'll have a new body".

Thanks for more entries. So many of these songs are favorites of mine as well- A Closer Walk with Thee, I saw the Light, and Morning Has Broken - I am looking forward to hearing the others on You Tube (but need to get on another computer, this one's too slow).

Does Sacred Harp count as gospel. I have always loved Pleyel's Hymn (#1).

I am glad I discovered all different types of gospel, because there are .......moments...and events...and........times.......when I need these songs for inspiration and respite.

'Trouble in My Way' as performed by the Swan Silvertones. I'm not sure of it's trad/gospel provenance but hearing the words '...father of Abraham..' sung so loudly that the microphone distorts is a favourite musical moment of mine.

I especially love bluegrass gospel in 4-part harmony. Some of my favourite groups are Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, The Stanley Brothers, Bill Monroe and The Dry Branch Fire Squad.It's really impossible to pick out the ONE favourite tune. Thanbks for your entry. It reminds me that the first gospel song I fell in love with was indeed black gospel- "Oh Happy Day" by the Edwin Hawkins singers. In fact, every single song on that album just lifted my spirit.

Well, "gospel" can mean bluegrass gospel, black gospel, southern gospel-- the gospel sub-variant of any other form of music or culture.

But in bluegrass-gospel, I like how so many texts seem to go to the same tune.

And I like a lot of the Hopeful Gospel Quartet stuff, for eclectic genre-transcending gospel that still sounds oldtimey. Heard "Climbing Up on the Rough Side of the Mountain" today and fell in love with that one all over again.

Black gospel, I like "Sweet Foreverland" a lot.
