Here's "Black Velvet Band" as best I can transcribe it from Jed's Lonestar Stout album:

BLACK VELVET BAND
Jed Marum version

In a neat little town they call Belfast
An apprentice to trade I was bound
And many's hours sweet happiness
I have spent in that neat little town
'Til bad misfortune o'ercame me
And caused me to stray from the land
Far away from me friends and relations,
To follow that black velvet band

    CHORUS:
But her eyes they shone like the diamonds
Ye'd think she was queen of the land
And her hair hung over her shoulders
Tied up with a black velvet band

Well, now I was out strolling one evening
Not meaning to go very far,
When I met with a pretty young damsel
Plyin' her trade in the bar.
When a watch she took from a customer
And she slipped it right into me hand
And the law came and put me in prison
Bad luck to her black velvet band

CHORUS

Now next morning before judge and jury
At trial I had to appear
And the judge he said, "You young fellow
The case against you is quite clear.
Ah, seven long years is your sentence
You're going to Van Dieman's land
Far away from your friends and relations
Bad luck to her black velvet band

CHORUS

Now come all ye jolly young fellows,
I'll have ye take warning by me
Whenever you're out on the liquor, me lad
Beware of those pretty colleens.
They'll fill you with whiskey and porter,
Until you're not able to stand;
And the very next thing that you know, me lad,
You've landed in Van Dieman's land.

CHORUS x 2

I think what really makes it come alive and very different is that he sings it to the tune of "Hava Nagila." The scan isn't perfect but personally I think it gives it a more danceable beat.

We had an Irish folksinger visiting Australia earlier this year, sorry I can't remember his name, told a story of being asked to sing "the one about the girl with the hairy tongue." He couldn't imagine what the person was talking about. Turned out to be the line, Her hairy tongue over her shoulders/Tied up with a black velvet band."

Sounds like instead of being pickpocket, she was involved in a profession with "activities" that encouraged hair growth. (I know...shame on me for even thinking such things.)
