Subject: Addicted to You Tube From: lefthanded guitar Date: 06 Dec 07 - 05:38 PM Last week I discovered You Tube. I am now addicted. I have youtubed everyone from the Carter Family to Van Morrison performing with the Chieftains, Hank Williams (!) and now just found a lovely song by Nanci Griffith. I am spending every spare moment I have on You Tube, watching videos and discovering and rediscovering beloved music. So now I realize there are actually...gaps in You Tube's vast arsenal of songs. Is there another website anyone knows of that has a more complete stack of Folk oriented videos. Don't worry, I WILL go into rehab if this mania lasts more than a couple of days more. Alright alright, a coupla weeks. Well, one or two months at the most. Ah, ya know, winter's comin' anyways and it's getting to cold to go out. PS I discovered something interesting about some of the You Tube song videos- some of the tend to get 'stuck' in spots, they stop abruptly in the middle of playing. BUT if you let it run through, nudging it with the mouse every so often, and then play it again , it doesn't get stuck anymore. Did this on my most most recent discovery- Goodnight New York, a very poignant song written by Julie Gold and performed by Nanci Griffith. Well I'm going outside now to get dinner. Haven't been out all day but I'm getting ready to go outside now. Really I am. Really. As soon as I look up Mississippi John Hurt, I'll be on my way. I will. Honest. |

Subject: RE: Addicted to You Tube From: Beer Date: 06 Dec 07 - 05:50 PM Just listened to "Goodnight New Your" Great tune. Not hooked as bad as you seem to be but sure do love it. Beer (adrien) |
Subject: RE: Addicted to You Tube From: lefthanded guitar Date: 06 Dec 07 - 05:56 PM Thanks. The i-rack seems to be lists of music to buy, but not videos, unless there's another website. But it's nice to have another resource. Not that I need one. But I AM cutting back. Promise Thanks Beer, it sure is a great song. I am SURE I will become less addicted in the future. And I really AM going out now. (I have to, there's no food left in the kitchen.) |

Subject: RE: Addicted to You Tube From: katlaughing Date: 06 Dec 07 - 07:52 PM Have you been to the Mudcat youtube permathread, yet? We spent a couple or so hours one night just clicking on each link in it. Oh, and you can add links to it, also. There are some lovely links including our own Jean Ritchie aka kytrad on Pete Seeger's show back in the black & white tv days and bunches more. Send out an SOS if ya need to...we'll throw ya a lifeline IF we haven't all jumped in to join you! |
Subject: RE: Addicted to You Tube From: Beer Date: 06 Dec 07 - 08:35 PM Seen that one SRS. Great great clip. Lefthanded, I don't know if you follow Guy Clarke or not but see if you can find the song "Immigrant Eyes". If you like "Goodnight New York", this one will blow you away. I don't know if it is on You Tube. |
Subject: RE: Addicted to You Tube From: GUEST,hg Date: 06 Dec 07 - 09:53 PM I can sure cop to that lhg. Rick Fielding would have loved to see old videos of Leadbelly. Do you play like Elizabeth Cotten? |
Subject: RE: Addicted to You Tube From: wysiwyg Date: 06 Dec 07 - 10:55 PM Run Total Recorder while enjoying YouTube music; soon the saving and naming of the resulting sound files, not to mention converting them to MP3 format and keeping track of THAT, will turn YouTube into a chore that is far less addictive. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Addicted to You Tube From: Azizi Date: 06 Dec 07 - 11:19 PM I enjoy Youtubing too though I wouldn't say that I'm addicted to it. YouTube videos sure beat the heck out of midi sound files. I consider YouTube to be a great resource and an enjoyable, aesthetically pleasing past time. Plus, in my opinion, the viewers' comments are often interesting reads, and folkloric artifacts in and of themselves. |
Subject: RE: Addicted to You Tube From: Gulliver Date: 06 Dec 07 - 11:25 PM What is Total Recorder? Don PS, I'm hooked too... |
Subject: RE: Addicted to You Tube From: topical tom Date: 06 Dec 07 - 11:47 PM Hooked on youtube? Yes, I am!I have watched videos on the Carter Family, Jimmy Rogers,Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie, the Stanley Brothers and Lord knows how many more!Sometimes I have been having my fix until 2, 2:30, 3in the morning!I begin with one performance and follow the links God knows how far! It's a thrill,a joy to see all these folk, bluegrass and blues performers from the early days to the present time. However, I fear that for domestic bliss I may have to join Youtube Anonymous in the future.Gotta go! I'm having a craving! Bye! |
Subject: RE: Addicted to You Tube From: wysiwyg Date: 07 Dec 07 - 12:04 AM Total Recorder is a very affordable software that takes whatever is coming through your sound card and makes a WAV file that you can clip and edit in other ways I have not yet learned. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Addicted to You Tube From: harpmolly Date: 07 Dec 07 - 01:13 AM Oh my God, Youtube is quite possibly the biggest timesuck EVER. It gets even worse once you start *posting* videos...now, instead of procrastinating by surfing endlessly through videos, I procrastinate by obsessively checking to see how many hits I've got, new comments, etc. It's really quite sad (especially because I get email alerts from Messenger if I get a new comment, so really, there's no good reason to keep checking). However, I've found some fantastic stuff on the 'tube, and the "Favorites" feature is invaluable. I mean, how else can I watch Rita Moreno singing "Fever" with Animal on the Muppet Show (not to mention the CLASSIC "Danny Boy" trio of Beaker, Animal and the Swedish Chef...I may be singlehandedly responsible for about half the hits on that one. ;)) Sure, there are some total trollish beefwits on Youtube, but for me the good far outweighs the bad. Well, until 2am on a work night when I'm still surfing, that is. ;) Molly |
Subject: RE: Addicted to You Tube From: PoppaGator Date: 07 Dec 07 - 01:52 PM Hey Lefty, are you still looking up Mississippi John Hurt videos? Or did you mange to break away to eat dinner yesterday evening after all? There are an amazing number of MJH clips available, and good ones at that. I killed a few hours several weeks ago on that very same quest... |
Subject: RE: Addicted to You Tube From: lefthanded guitar Date: 07 Dec 07 - 01:53 PM Couldn't find the Guy Clark song alas. Following the titles listed beckons to so many others, both those listed on you tube and then sparking memories of songs in one's own (fevered lil) mind. Today I wandered from Missisippi John Hurt (what a good spirited, uplifting and lilting musician he was!) to Pat Sky down the road to Libba Cotten (yes I DO play like her) which led to Jimi Hendrix (listed on the you tube box, must be something about that left handed thing) to Moby Grape (!) and found a little song from long ago by Mason Profitt, "Two Hangmen" , and currently diving and delving into Buffy Sainte Marie and the Pennysingers who seemed to have performed with the most amazing and eclectic selection of folks. Haunting voices, is there any chance they are still around? Next perhaps a dance around the floor with a man who brings his own floor, Chris Smither (tryin' to find When I Was A Caveman...now that's really going back in time ) See ya when I come back up for air, gang. I dont' know about the youtube thread here...you are welcome to enlighten me tho. I'll be back shortly.....well...maybe not surely but..I'll be back. I promise. I will. I can do that. Honest I can. Honest I do (hmmmm now I have a craving for Sam Cooke) |
Subject: RE: Addicted to You Tube From: GUEST,Ythanside Date: 07 Dec 07 - 04:17 PM Jean Redpath singing 'Before They Close the Minstrel Show' is one of my favourites on Youtube. The video is totally irrelevant, but the singing is exquisite. Well worth a listen. |
Subject: RE: Addicted to You Tube From: katlaughing Date: 07 Dec 07 - 06:32 PM sorry, lhg, should have posted this before: The Mudcat Youtube Permathread in which one may post links which fit the stated criteria and it which they get sorted and grouped together under certain headings. It is a moderated thread. |
Subject: RE: Addicted to You Tube From: Gulliver Date: 08 Dec 07 - 05:01 PM I've just checked--I've downloaded over 800 videos so far from YouTube which I can watch at my leisure. Many old recordings, also foreign language songs, etc. Great resource. Don |
Subject: RE: Addicted to You Tube From: lefthanded guitar Date: 14 Dec 07 - 05:39 PM I forgot to thank Stily River Sage for that great video of the gentleman who channelled Pavorotti, blowing away Simon and the entire audience and me. A delight. And to thank good ol'helpful and happy katlaughing for posting the permathread which led me to Doc Watson and Jean Ritchie (oh MY) singing that haunting and harrowing Black Water and then on to Jean doing a duet of Dear Companion with Emmy Lou, which somehow led to Nanci Griffith and next have to check out the Jimmy Rogers (!) Waiting for a Train..yodeladee hoooooo Or is thank you the word here? I may not be back for a long long time. |
