I actually bought the concertina sight unseen also. I got it from Harold Herrington in Texas. He builds anglo concertinas and I think he took this one in on a trade. I built up a rapport with him over the phone and was very satisfied with the quality of the instrument.

I had not thought about the buyer getting insurance, I think that is a good idea,

I'm in Massachusetts and bought my 1870 Wheatstone English concertina from a nice lady in South Carolina. We had not (and still have not) met. She had advertised the instrument on concertina.net and I got in touch with her.

She played the instrument to me over the phone and it did sound nice. We arranged the sale and the instrument arrived a week later. She sent it USPS and insured it. She also packed it very well in a box twice as big with lots of bubble wrap and packing peanuts.

It is one of THE BEST purchases I have ever made. The instrument is perfect and has a really lovely voice.

This was my experience, though.

Pack well, at least 3" of bubble wrap all around, in a sturdy box, and require the buyer purchase shipping insurance as part of the transaction. If the shipper then damages it, the buyer can file a claim to recover the stated purchase value.

Not sure if you are Stateside or UK, but an alternative you might try is craigslist (.org or .co.uk - depending), which are free classified ads online.

Since there are metropolitan/regional "craigslists" (eg, I go to "boston.craigslist.org"), you can specify that there will be no shipping and the buyer will have to pick up. (If you get someone who really wants it and asks for it to be shipped, I like jonm's suggestion -- have the buyer specify shipping.)

This is how I bought my Martin D16-R...got a great price (talked the the previous owner down) and just had to spend a little gas money.

Margo, usually you would pay a fee online, anyway, such as on eBay. A lot of folks who sell on there will specify that the item must be picked up or that they will only send it within a certain region, etc.

I have a Lachenal English in good nick. I have no idea of what it would be worth or even the general price range. Just curious though, as I have definitely no intention of selling!

If I were buying another English, I would want to go and collect it, not trust it to the vagaries of the postal service. If selling within a sensible distance, you probably will not have a problem.

Ask the buyer to recommend a method of transfer? Then they will be happy to accept what happens.

At our local folk festival we have a sale venue and time. Instruments, CDs, and anything suitable.

I've sold on our local equivalent of Ebay. It is usual to not despatch the item until the cash is in your account, usually by direct credit. Also, it is usual for the carriage to be extra to the sale price. As this is a web system, all contact is by email. If you are not on Ebay, canvass your friends to sell on your behalf, and be absolutely honest in your descripition.

If I was selling an english, which heaven forfend, I would prefer it to be collected and specify that, or make a wooden box for it, well padded within, and send by courier. Up to about 12kg/25lbs the price is the same.
You just take the packed item to them, fill in the form, and away it goes, very unlikely to be lost or damaged.

So I am selling my Wheatstone English concertina, and I am wondering how people manage selling long distance (for example, if I sell it online to someone). I don't want to pay a fee for consignment yet selling through an established shop gets rid of a lot of difficulties. Any opinions? Margo
