Why wouldn't you try sites provide Chinese music downloads, such as Google music or DownloadChinese.com. Maybe you could find resources there. Good luck!

Helen,

The tune goes under the beautiful title of CF01. Would love to hear your thoughts on the arrangement possibilities. If your MIDI playback gear allows it I suggest that you mute the sound of tracks 3&4 which are a bit heavy handed to my taste.

Haven't had a chance to check your Basque recommendations, but certainly will do so, thank you.

Good to see that you found something. What is the name of the tune on the site address you gave us? I'd like to check it out. What you have said sbout playing arrangements of it has me intrigued.

Have yu checked out the Basque music site which I think is in the Mudcat links. I know someone started a thread a few months back to let us know about the site. I love the music - it's different from anything I've heard, but somehow similar. (based on their Celtic cultural history I suppose)

Tucker, thanks for offering the intro. Every few years I do a musical meander and try and learn some new skills/genre/instrument. Some time soon I'll do a virtual tour East of Eden and see where it takes me. I have come across some great Arab Music MIDI sites, and the site I referred to above has a whole world of music to explore.

Kat, I should have pointed out that the tune is probably a poor facsimile of a REAL dragon dance, but it is up-tempo and a good tune to my occidental ears. Cheers, John.

Anyhow, I felt a ittle stupid about the Koto thing, because those are Japanese, not Chinese. I've heard exactly the type you were looking for in several Chinese films, juts don't knwo where to find the music. Glad you did, though. Can't wait to hear it.

Thanks Kat, I finally found a great tune that will fit the bill. It was at the excellent 4000 Volkslieder site listed in the Mudcat links. The section on Chinese Folksongs can be found at http://ingeb.org/catcn.html. There are about 64 tunes at this site, and I found it after searching randomly through 63 others.

I'm sure that Alison and Helen (and others with a Celtic bent) would get a real buzz out of playing it. I'll post the tune here in the next few days. What would make it really interesting for a (say) Celtic group to play are the variations in guitar rhythm and percussion - nothng too hard, just different. Furthermore the harmony part for mandolin/hammered-dulcimer/banjo sounds really classic Chinese and would be real fun to play - this sounds somewhat more complex. None of the backing parts would be reflected in the tune that I'll post, but if there's any interest I'll place the complete score on my web-site.

How about the opening theme from NYPD Blue?:-) I have several cd's of Koto drumming which include other instruments. I am sure we could find a sample on the 'Net. I have to go to a meeting this evening but will try to do some more checking, later.

Hi, John. I went searching on Yahoo and Dogpile. These three may have something. The third one is poorly designed, white print is hard to read, but if you wait for the whole thing to download (just a couple of minutes) it has music which automatically starts up, that sounds trad. Hope it helps. kat

I am urgently seeking an existing Midi to play at a school perormance of a Chinese Dragon Dance. I will supplement this with a few youngsters playing percussion.

Anyone know please where I could locate such a Midi, and any performance tips for the percussion or the dance itself?
