Various: Cold Blow these Winter Winds - A Celtic Celebration of Christmas
Media: CD
Genre: Folk & Traditional
Catalogue Number: GLCD1229
Label: Green Linnet
Released: 2004

with Rory Campbell's Border pipes leading the way....

The first track is merely described as "Christmas Tunes": can anyone enlighten me as to what these tunes might be?

Solved!

The phrase "with Rory Campbell's Border pipes leading the way...." related to the track "Little Drummer Boy", not the first track on the CD.

Kelly (Green Linnet) identified the first track as consisting of the tunes:

* Hosanna in Excelsis,
* I wish I was home for Christmas
* Deck the Halls

none of which I would have regarded as being particularly "A Celtic Celebration of Christmas".

I might have expected something more along the lines of "Christmas Day in the Morning" (Northumbrian) or perhaps "Christmas Day Ida Moarnin'" (Shetland).

Deck the Halls counts as 'celtic' because it's a Welsh tune, 'Nos Galan' (roughly translates as 'New Year', it's actually a new year carol).

Mind you, it depends entirely on your interpretation of 'celtic'.

If you want some other Christmas type tunes, try the Chieftans CD 'The Bells of Dublin' - that's a fabulous mix of carols, songs and tunes that follow the Christmas traditions from all over celtic Europe.

If you prefer the more Irish 'celtic' stuff, try 'Da day dawns' by The Boys of the Lough - although it may sell under a different title now.

Failing that, I can send you a dreadful CD of various Christmas carols played on the concertina and banjo - guaranteed to repel even the most hearty party-goer!
