Ahoy there! We've been hard at work putting the finishing touches on Lafitte's Return volumes 3 & 4 and we're pleased to announce that they went on sale DURING tonight's Bilgemunky Pirate Radio show. We're especially pleased with the variety of styles represented in our newest two CD release. Theres this song I wrote about Long John Silver, after Charlie Ipcar pointed out to us on mudcat, the John Masefield poem the Ballad of John Silver. I contributed the tune and the chorus, and hacked about Masefield's words to make it singable.

My "cohort?" Phillip is the nice guy running the charity, I'm just the volunteer who put this project together. Funny story really, it went something like...

Me: You should put together a compilation CD to raise money for the charity.
Phillip: Do you know anything about doing that sort of thing?
Me: I know a little from the other project I worked on. It could be a really great way to raise awareness for the charity, you really should do it.
Phillip: Want to help?
Me: Sure.
Me: ...
Me: Oh boy.

That said, the project was put together in three weeks thanks to the speed with which the artists responded. It was amazing. In addition we have two bands from Australia involved with the project as well as a band from Leeds and, of course, Tom Lewis from Canada.

With tracks coming in from everywhere, it turned out to be an amazing bit of music. I'm really looking forward to hearing what some of you think of the CDs.

PIRATES FOR THE PRESERVATION OF NEW ORLEANS MUSIC, (PPNOM),
http://www.ppnom.org, is a Texas Non Profit Corporation. We are subject to
all laws and regulations of The State of Texas Codes for a non profit

We will be filing a report with The Secretary of The State of Texas, and
The Internal Revenue Service once a year accounting for every donation
received.

What are we going to do with the money? I, Phillip Nitch, (aka Captain
Phleabag), will be speaking, one on one, with the music teachers and
program directors at the most devastated public schools in New Orleans. I
will compile a list, based on these conversations, of musical instruments
and supplies they need the most. I, Erik Brady, and Darie Fromholz,
PPNOM's Board of Directors, will travel to New Orleans at least twice in
2008 to purchase instruments and supplies at a locally owned New Orleans
music store, helping to bolster the economy. After purchasing the
instruments and recording their serial numbers, we will personally deliver
them to the schools. This will ensure that there will be no beaurocrats
interfering or embezzling the funds. We will do everything we can enlist
local and national press to accompany us for these donations. This
coverage will shine a light on all the great people who made these
donations possible. Having everything done in the public eye will also
give confidence to the people who donate to our charity, ensuring that we
are indeed legitimate and fulfilling our mission as stated above.

All donations will be deposited into the PPNOM savings account, which will
be managed by our Certified Public Accountant. The account will also be
subject to random audits by The State of Texas and The IRS.

Finally, we are receiving a lot of important publicity support from The
South By South West Music Conference and The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage
Foundation. I would hope that the support of two very well respected
entities such as SXSW anf NOJHF would give any one inquiring about the

It may be archaic, but CD only is indeed the way we are going. Remember, these artists have donated tracks from their own CDs and Master licenses can be a bit of a pain when you get into digitally distributing other people's stuff. Especially songs, such as Bartholomew Roberts, which is already being licensed to us by a third party.

We will be making the CDs available through CD Baby fairly soon though.

The CD-only distribution seems a bit archaic.

You might want to consider CDBaby as a distro method, and
allowing people to download the material, rather than making
a physical CD.

Also, Cindy Kallet both singly and in her collaboration with
Grey Larsen uses a very interesting artists' web site
service from Noteway ( http://www.noteway.com/ ) which allows
for what I think is a great distribution methodology.

She and Grey stream individual tracks for free, sell them
singly for a dollar each, as well as the whole album downloadable
and individual CDs.

Well, the $3 processing fee is an issue of dealing with Kunaki. In order to keep overhead down, we're using Kunaki's "On Demand" service which creates the CDs as ordered. This eliminates the need for the charity to spend money to stockpile the CD. The CD's themselves are just gorgeous. My group, Marooned, switched over to using Kunaki for our most recent CD, which is how I had heard about them.

So, the price was originally to have been $15 + S/H but, since Kunaki adds a $3 fee to each order, we dropped the price to $12 figuring that folks were more likely to spend $15 for a CD than $18.

As for volume 2? It is already available. IF we have enough interest we may do a volume 3 next year. I mean, I could easily keep putting these together, there certainly is enough artist interest, however there comes a point where the CDs are just competing with themselves too.

Thanks for the highly detailed info. NOJH Foundation is indeed a reputable and highly effective organization. (I had mentioned the Tips Foundation earlier; they work so closely hand-in-hand with the NOJHF, especially in this instruments-to-schools area, that a contribution to either one is likely to wind up in the same place, with minimal overhead.)

The idea about buying the instruments from local vendor NOME, and thus participating in the local economy, is a plus, too.

Finally, I applaud the approach of charging that $3 handling fee per order rather than increasing the per CD price from $12 to $15. Shipping and handling, of course, always costs something ~ "free shipping" just means that the cost is included in basic prices i nsead of being listed separately.

We who sing these kinds of songs in New Orleans, of course, look forward to being included if and when there's a Volume Two.

That handling fee is why we cut the retail price of the CD from $15 to $12, to make up for it. Not only that, but if you order more than one CD you actually end up ahead.

I figured that I wanted to make sure that everyone got something from this project. I want all of the contributing artists to get recognition for their work and a healthy bit of cross advertising never helps. The charity gets the proceeds from the CD and the people purchasing the CDs? For $12 per CD (plus Kunaki's $3 fee) you are getting about 78 minutes worth of music...per CD.

I think everyone wins.

Oh, a correction of an earlier comment...

ModernBard.org and myself are not involved with RESCU (Renaissance Entertainers, Services, and Crafters United) though I do have links on the Modern Bard website in hopes of sending folks their way. I think they are a great organization and one worth supporting.

I am, however, the mind behind "Circle", the Renaissance Festival music compilation CD to raise money for the Red Cross Hurricane Relief efforts after Katrina. Marc Gunn, of the Renaissance Festival Music Podcast, did the lion's share of bringing that project to life though, so this is the first project of this kind that I've seen through from beginning to end.

Ahoy there folks,
I'm Bob Brinkman, the person insane enough to put together this multi-CD project in the span of about three weeks. I'd like to start off by giving a big "Thank you" to all the artists who contributed to the CD. We actually had music STILL coming in at the time of the second CD's release and so a third might be available next year.

Now then, I myself am not a representative of PPNOM, I'm just the CD fellow. However, to answer questions on how the charity is handling things, I can quite Phillip Nitch (of the Jolly Garogers) who is one of the folks running the organization and the information that I've collected.

In partnership with the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival (NOJHF), monies raised during the IDD will be used to purchase musical instruments and other associated items in bulk and at greatly discounted prices from the New Orleans Music Exchange. NOJHF's existing relationship with the New Orleans Music Exchange will facilitate this process.

Purchasing instruments at a local New Orleans music store enhances the focus of this project, bolstering the New Orleans economy while acquiring quality musical instruments at the lowest possible prices.
Following the acquisition of the needed musical items, NOJHF will expedite PPNOM's delivery of the musical instruments to the New Orleans public school system under the auspices of the following, existing NOJHF's enterprises:

1.)        The Heritage School of Music, NOJHF's own "Jazz-in-the-Schools" program, which has a long-standing, proven history of donation to the New Orleans public school system, and

2.)        The Recovery School District (RSD). The Recovery School District is a special program of the state of Louisiana that has assumed responsibility for the renovation and return to operation of those New Orleans public schools most severely impacted by hurricane Katrina. The RSD initiative allows the NOLA public school system to focus on the continued delivery of quality education in the unaffected schools to the students of New Orleans without the encumbrances of a simultaneous rebuilding effort.

So, that's the charity questions hopefully answered. As for the CDs themselves? Lafitte's Return volumes 1 & 2 are being distributed through the services of Kunaki.com. Kunaki's system makes it possible to make the CD available for on-line purchase with no start-up costs to the charity, and very low ongoing overhead (we need to sell one copy of each CD every 6 months to keep the product on Kunaki).

One of the things I insisted on was that the CD be able to provide for itself rather than having the charity invest already collected funds into another way to collect funds. That seemed counterproductive to me. I'd much rather simply collect more for the charity.

With that thought in mind we've approached a few folks about small sponsorships to cover the costs of CD Baby set up, review copies and the like) and we've even been graciously donated ad space by Pyrates Way Magazine as well as the Sun Runner Magazine.

This is a word of mouth project, at least on my end. I'm not asking the charity to invest funds in it because I believe that, with enough word of mouth, these albums can do a great deal of good.

I should point out that there are a LOT of people who have given their aid to this project.

For the record, I live in the suburbs of Washington DC, and have never managed to visit new Orleans, the jewel of the South.
We are just trying to assist in the recovery. My direct involvement in the project is as a contributer. We know that they will be using a second track on the follow-up album.
ModernBard.org is also involved with RESCU, an organization that helps renaissance fair performers in financial need.
In any case, I invite people to think about buying the album to support this cause.

The N.O. Quarter Shantey Krewe has been only sporadically active since Katrina. We've all been distracted, to varying degrees at different times, by personal issues as well as the huge public issues of rebuilding our home town.

Our leader and organizer, K.C. King, has become very deeply involved in the recovery effort in recent months. Also, he and his wife Kathi have other musical projects in addition to the Shanty Krewe (as instrumenal accompanyists for Irish dancers), so their already-limited time and energy can't be solely directed towards maritime music.

I do not believe there are any existing recordings of the NOQSK, but then I've only been involved for a couple of years (and have been largely UNinvolved in recent months). Maybe the prospect of recording something for "volume 2" of this project would prompt us to action!

I'm curious through which channels the proceeds of this project will be sent. (I haven't checked the web links yet, but intend to do so.) As we all know, some "charities" function much more effectively than others in effiently serving their causes, without skimming too much off the top. I know that the Tipitina's Foundation is doing a lot of good work supplying instruments to schools ~ they were engaged in that very effort even before Katrina, and have kept it up very well.

I believe KC's mudcat name is "ship*scat" or something like that, but I'm not sure that he's checking for PMs very regualrly these days (or at all). I will email him a link to this thread so he knows about this effort.

Barry, K.C. is an old friend. The Boarding Party were local heroes to us.
Are those N O-area shanty singers recorded? If so, then they should contact the PPNOM.org to see if they can be included on the second or some secessive CD.
Please keep in mind that we PRs are not involved with the production of the album. We just donated our tracks to a worthy cause.

They didn't have to look to the Northwest & West coasts, they could've looked around the corner in their own backyard. There's an existing community of shanty singers that have get togethers in NO.
Some of the "old talent" (he,he,he, sorry KC) there you can't beat with a stick!

I understand that the styles are a broad range of music and the subject are anything from trad shanties to very modern. I think that the second CD will have more trad on it.
If we can get some money raised by riding the pirate craze wave, I think we will have done well.

However, there are a few songs on the above list which hardly merit the characterization of "pirate song" but why quibble when it's for a good cause.

We Pyrates Royale were recently asked to contribute tracks for albums to help rebuild New Orleans school music programs.
