Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: Dave4Guild Date: 11 Dec 07 - 04:37 PM Indeed she is, but I think the advert is by Patrick Street! |

Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: Ross Campbell Date: 12 Dec 07 - 06:23 PM Folk has made the Ads Well, sort of - "Music for a Found Harmonium " was composed by Simon Jeffes who founded Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Ten years after his death, the band came together again this week for a series of concerts at Union Chapel, Islington (wish I could have been there). He would take themes from around the world, many with a base in traditional or folk styles, and weave them into magical musical adventures. Patrick Street were "early adopters" of "Music for a Found Harmonium", originally in an arrangement by Kevin Burke, Jackie Daly, Andy Irvine and Artie McGlynn. It was quickly taken up by Irish sessions around the world, and, like many of Jeffes' compositions, sounds as though it ought to be traditional. I suspect the version on the ad has been slightly carved up to fit - but it's still great to hear it! Ross |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 12 Dec 07 - 07:36 PM I haven't seen the advert so I may be getting the original question wrong, but since no one has yet mentioned this: Sharon Shannon (button accordion) recorded that number and brought it to wider attention. Maybe she's the one playing it? She's certainly the musician a lot of people here (Ireland) associate with it. |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: GUEST Date: 12 Dec 07 - 08:06 PM Every song on Harriet's CD is well done, the woman has lots of talent. |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: Ross Campbell Date: 12 Dec 07 - 08:13 PM I just heard the B&Q advert the once and assumed Patrick Street because I'm aware of that version from about fifteen to twenty years ago. I should still have it on lp or cd. If I get the chance to trap the ad on tape, I'll compare. I saw Sharon Shannon years ago at Southport Arts Centre and she could well have played this - but that's not the version I'd think of first. Confused - I am! Bonnie, you stayed at my house when you played the old Fleetwood Folk Club with Packie Byrne - a great night (early eighties, that would have to be?) The club has been and gone and come back again since then, and continues as a weekly singaround with occasional guests. Ross |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 12 Dec 07 - 08:28 PM Wow! Of course I remember Fleetwood - what great times those were. So glad to hear the club is still alive. Thanks so much for the memory jog! |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: Fliss Date: 12 Dec 07 - 08:46 PM Thanks for the info Ross. Its certainly a tune for experts only. |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: GUEST,artymar Date: 13 Dec 07 - 06:52 AM Does anyone know if Simon Edwards played accordion with Patrick Street? |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: Brian Hoskin Date: 13 Dec 07 - 08:47 AM It's not a B&Q advert it's an MFI one. You can watch it here. I'm pretty sure it's Patrick Street. Brian |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: GUEST,LTS pretending to work Date: 13 Dec 07 - 08:57 AM The arrangement certainly sounds identical to the CD I have of Patrick Street playing it. Anyone else seen the Irn Bru advert featuring a re-write of the Snowman song 'walking in the air'? I laughed so hard, I scared the cat! LTS |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: GUEST,Brian Finnigan Date: 13 Dec 07 - 11:44 AM I'm pretty sure it's Harriet Bartlett - www.harrietbartlett.com if for some remote reason it isn't then it shoud've been it's on her Myspace page go to www.myspace.com/harrietbartlett she's wonderful |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: GUEST,Riverman Date: 13 Dec 07 - 11:50 AM Most if not all music from adverts and the artists who play it can be found on this cracking site www.commercialbreaksandbeats.co.uk Haven't looked for this one yet so don't know if it's on there. Generally doesn't take long for them to get it up on the site though. Enjoy. |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: Jack Blandiver Date: 13 Dec 07 - 12:48 PM The Penguin Cafe album was 'Broadcasting from Home' which came out in 1984; I still have the original vinyl somewhere, though my favourite track was 'In the Back of Taxi' which features some tasty trombone from Annie Whitehead. MFAFH features in a number of film soundtracks, including the Australian movie 'Malcolm' wherein the eponymous autistic inventor unwittingly assists a latter day Bonny & Clyde in a series of bank jobs. The opening sequence frames the music beautifully... The first time I heard MFAFH in a session I just about choked on my pint, being oblivious of the Patrick Street cover, but every session in Tyneside included it thereafter. Simon Jeffes always had this notion that he writing his own 'Ethnic Music' somehow; not quite sure how that works exactly, but who else could find creative use for the Omnichord? Or create a piece inspired by the serendipitous interplay of the engaged tone with the ringing tone? Doesn't George Welsh do a version of MFAFH on his ukulele? In fact, I'm sure it was George I first heard playing it a session actually, at the Cumberland Arms, Byker, circa 1985 (?) when were setting up upstairs for a gig with Rhombus of Dooom, Seize the Infidels & Generic. All a far cry from The Steamer I admit; though I bask weekly in the glow of Mr Baxters superlative performances & the raring sound of The Mighty Roast (as we call them), featuring of course the resplendent harmonium of Mr France. A found harmonium perhaps? If so, I wonder where he found it? |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: Fliss Date: 13 Dec 07 - 02:08 PM Oh soz thought it was B&Q, only saw some of it when I heard the music. Ill email Harriet and ask her asap. Doesnt sound like her tho. Off to the weekly Irish music session ... wall to wall Irish music.. with perhaps a few carols over the next couple of weeks. Blow TV its much more fun doing it for real. fxx |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: Folkiedave Date: 13 Dec 07 - 02:40 PM Thanks to whoever posted it was MFI. That is clearly correct. I am playing it on my radio show tomorrow to open up the second half at 11.00 am. It is Patrick St. on the advert or it is a very good imitation - or Patrick St. copied the advert. It is not Harriet. Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: Effsee Date: 13 Dec 07 - 02:43 PM It's Patrick St., and I've been using it on my prog as a sig. tune for about eight years! |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: GUEST Date: 13 Dec 07 - 06:23 PM Yes but can I still keep dreaming of Harriet? she's a real angel, extremely nice person. I wouldn't say I was the most good looking of guys - far from it, but on meeting her at a festival she stood and talked/listen to me for what seemed forever and didn't once look bored - you know the look and the blank gaze you sometimes get from people who think they're important, Just a lovely girl. Tom |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: Ross Campbell Date: 14 Dec 07 - 05:49 AM I just found the ad again - definitely Patrick Street - there's a "zoom" take-off effect at a certain point of the tune that nobody else quite does. Also definitely MFI. Ah well, such is the power of advertising - you spend all that money and people get distracted by the content and end up thinking it was some other store! (not to mention some other group/person). Ross |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: Fliss Date: 14 Dec 07 - 07:39 AM Thanks for the confirmation that its Patrick Street. I wasnt looking at the content. I was in the kitchen cooking. I heard the music and thought wow. Hence the confusion. Mind you Im fairly confused most of the time... its me age!! |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: clueless don Date: 14 Dec 07 - 09:24 AM Yes, definitely Patrick Street on the MFI ad. I have several recordings of it - Patrick Street, Sharon Shannon, Nollaig Casey, Four Men and a Dog. Someday I want to get the original Penguin Cafe Orchestra recording - it seems to be available on several Penguin Cafe Orchestra records. I enjoy the tune a lot, but on the Irish Traditional Music list (IRTRAD-L), it seems to be considered politically correct to hate it. Don |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: GUEST,Crouchie Date: 14 Dec 07 - 05:10 PM Hi there! thanks to all the knowledgeable people that have named this fantastic track, just want to mention it's also used on "Napoleon Dynamite" Keep it real, music lovers. |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: Rog Peek Date: 15 Dec 07 - 06:25 AM Of course Phil Ochs wrote and performed a song advertising 'Pay TV' in '63. Talkin' Pay TV By Phil Ochs Walkin' down to Denver town I watched the western sun go down. Thought that I would stop a while, Switch around my TV dial. Got some free Tee Vee . . . Only price was a little boredom. Well, I'm not sure about my taste But it seemed that TV land was a waste. I saw 30 Westerns, 30 Private Eyes, 30 doctors operated before my eyes. None of the operations was successful, though . . . It's hard to operate with so much violence around. Well, every few minutes they'd take a break For a profound message on a stomach ache. They sold cures for dandruff, milk from the farm Perfume for my underarms. I've had enough . . . I'm stickin' to greasy kid stuff. Well, the blood and gore was upon the floor And I couldn't hardly stand no more, So I walked outside to get some air. A theater owner was standing there: Carryin' a picket sign . . . Said Pay TV was un-American. He said "I'm against that Pay TV. I've much rather have people pay me." A dollar for parking, two for the show, Three for the baby sitter, there you go! Get to see a wide-screen spectacular . . . Hercules meets Godzilla . . . Audience meets nausea. Well, Pay TV is fine to see You get much better quality: Broadway shows, heavy-weight fights First-run movies every night. Viewers of Denver, unite! . . . Nothing to lose but commercials. Well, people are afraid of something new. They laughed at planes before they flew. You know, you only get just what you buy So give that Pay TV a try. Remember: . . . families that pay together stay together. Rog. |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: Big Al Whittle Date: 19 Dec 07 - 11:09 AM The best version I'v heard of MFAFH is Pete Smith and Chris Williams - two young guys who demonstrate Taylor guitars. |
Subject: RE: TV Advert music From: HipflaskAndy Date: 19 Dec 07 - 03:57 PM There's another folk-style-soundtracked ad with a soft Irish voice singing summat about 'we all need a hug' - sounds a lot like Colum Sands - anyone enlighten me? |
