Subject: RE: Chords: Sham-a-Ling-Dong-Ding (Jesse Winchester) From: GUEST,Ron Roberts Date: 25 Sep 11 - 08:51 AM Jesse, I want to thank you for this beutiful song, Elvis was right when he said you blow him away everytime. Jesse I pray that the Good Lord will watch over you during this fight. I lost my wife in July after fighting cancer for 17 years, she refused to let cancer get the best of her. She recieved a bone marrow transplant and passed away cancer free, unfortunatly a lung disease took her life. She was a wonderful example of faith, hope, love and compassion. I hope that you will also be blessed. Sham-a-ling helps me with my lonliness, it's as if you wrote the song for us. We were married 45 years, high school sweethearts. We love and pray for you. God Bless you, Ronnie and Ellen |

Subject: RE: Chords: Sham-a-Ling-Dong-Ding (Jesse Winchester) From: GUEST,Mike LaFramboise Date: 29 Jul 10 - 10:27 AM I have my take on this song posted on the UMGF. Mostly D-Bm-G-Em-A7 (capo'd at the 2nd fret so really E-C#m etc.). I have it more clearly spelled out there but I'm not sure how to link it. Lovely tune, makes people cry every time. It's not hard to lift if you watch the Costello/Spectacle video and listen carefully. For me the key is the lilting tempo that almost suggests waltz time. Oh, and that lovely chord (Daug or Gm7sus9) at "we always sang along". Mike |

I just wrote to Jesse's agent and asked her if she would forward my request to Jesse. I reminded her that I had booked him last year for our festival and hope that next time he is up this way that maybe I could get him to play for us. I still can't believe that with all our musical members, no one has been doing this number. oh well!. ad. |

Subject: ADD: Sham-a-Ling-Dong-Ding (Jesse Winchester) From: Joe Offer Date: 19 Jul 10 - 01:45 AM For the record, there's a video recording of the song at YouTube. -Joe- And, for the record, the lyrics: Sham-a-Ling-Dong-Ding (Jesse Winchester) The boys were singing shing-a-ling The summer night we met You were tan and seventeen O how could I forget When every star from near and far Was watching from above Watching two teenagers fall in love The way we danced was not a dance But more a long embrace We held on to each other and We floated there in space And I was shy to kiss you while The whole wide world could see So shing-a-ling said everything for me And O the poor old old folks They thought we'd lost our minds They could not make heads or tails Of the young folks' funny rhymes But you and I knew all the words And we always sang along to O sham-a-ling-dong-ding Sham-a-ling-dang-dong So after years and after tears And after summers past The old folks tried to warn us How our love would never last And all we'd get was soaking wet From walking in the rain And singing sham-a-shing-a-ling again And O the poor old old folks They smile and walk away But I bet they did some Sham-a-lama-ding-dong in their day I bet that they still close their eyes And I bet they sing along to O sham-a-ling-dong-ding Sham-a-ling-dang-dong O those sweet old love songs Every word rings true Sham-a-ling-dong-ding means sweetheart Sham-a-ling-dang-dong does too And it means that right here in my arms That's where you belong And it means sham-a-ling-dong-ding Sham-a-ling-dang-dong |

Subject: RE: jesse winchester song??-Sham-A-Ling-Dong-Ding From: C. Ham Date: 16 Dec 07 - 07:36 PM The recording that Folk Alley played was from the Kent State Folk Festival. The song is not yet available on one of Jesse's own album's. 1999's Gentleman of leisure is Jesse's most recent album of new material, so I'd assume the song is less than eight years old. |
Subject: RE: jesse winchester song?? From: Joe Offer Date: 16 Dec 07 - 01:50 AM He did it on Mountain Stage on July 20, but apparently that show is no longer available for download. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: jesse winchester song?? From: Sorcha Date: 15 Dec 07 - 09:16 PM Apparently Folk Alley (radio) played it on Oct. 11, 2007. See here. Might be worth contacting them? The album, etc is listed on the page I linked. I checked the archives and didn't find it but it was just a quick look. Might be there. Mountain Stage (radio) also played it. Put "sham a ling" just like that in Google and you'll find what I found. This thread is the first hit! LOL |
Subject: RE: jesse winchester song?? From: Dave'sWife Date: 15 Dec 07 - 07:54 PM I would have guess The Executioner's song because of the hummed chorus. 'd love to hear "Sham-A-Ling-Dong-Ding. I've always loved his music. A babysitter of mine as a kid had one of his albums and I swear we wore the grooves right off that thing! |
Subject: RE: jesse winchester song?? From: Michael S Date: 15 Dec 07 - 05:56 PM Not a lot of action on this post (undoubtedly because no one knew the answer). Jim Steinblatt of ASCAP was nice enough to ask Jesse directly. The song is called "Sham-A-Ling-Dong-Ding." Jesse didn't say if he has recorded it (and perhaps Jim didn't ask). I've searched Amazon, iTunes and Jesse's home page and I can't find a recording. It's a beautiful song. Peace, Michael Scully |
Subject: RE: jesse winchester song?? From: Michael S Date: 12 Dec 07 - 05:48 PM Thank you. I'll try that. A reply from Jesse would be fun. Since that may take weeks, if anyone knows the answer I'd still appreciate it if you'd post it here. If I learn first, I'll answer my own question for the rest of you. Michael |
Subject: RE: jesse winchester song?? From: C. Ham Date: 12 Dec 07 - 05:32 PM There's a contact address for Jesse's webmaster on his site. I once asked a question to that address and got an e-mail back (a few weeks later) from Jesse himself. |
Subject: jesse winchester song?? From: Michael S Date: 12 Dec 07 - 03:47 PM Hello, I hope someone can help. At the 2007 International Folk Alliance Conference, Jesse Winchester received an award. Following his acceptance speech he sang a beautiful, slow- tempo song that I have never heard anywhere else. As I recall, it was about an older couple dancing to or merely recalling the songs of their youth. The chorus said something about the couple singing the phrase sham ba la la la (or some such thing) as they reminisced. Does anyone know the name of this song, if it's recorded, and/or on what recording? I have looked at Jesse's official website, which provides lyrics from 10 albums released through 1999. No luck there. Anyone? Thanks all. Michael Scully Austin, TX |
