SAN DIEGO (AP) - Ike Turner, whose role as one of rock's critical architects was overshadowed by his ogrelike image as the man who brutally abused former wife and icon Tina Turner, died Wednesday at his home in suburban San Diego. He was 76. "He did pass away this morning" at his home in San Marcos, in northern San Diego County, said Scott M. Hanover of Thrill Entertainment Group, which managed Turner's musical career.

It's hard to honor the contributions he made to music without remembering that he used to beat the crap out of his wife.

Yeah, it kinda casts a pall over his contributions.

As many of us will soon be celebrating the birth of a Great Master later this month, His teaching of forgiveness seems appropriate at this time. Personally, I'll remember Ike Turner's contribution to music. May the Great Spirit that guides us all forgive him...

Rest in Peace...

Well, I've never thought I was Christ so pardon me if I retain my vision of him as an asshole huh? Why do we want to do that?

"He was a great artist but he had some faults. Let's remember the artist."

Fuck that.....I don't think JC was any too choked up over assjacks like Ike Turner and I don't recall that he beat on Mary M either.........but maybe I missed that part. Ike was just a jagov......period.

Next case.

Ike should be remembered for his actions! Talent isn't that important when you've got it, it's what you do with it. Ike was an asshole.

Talent isn't that important when you've got it, it's what you do with it. Ike was an asshole.

Being an asshole isn't what he did with his talent, it's what he did with his rage. With his talent, he was one of the inventors of Rock and Roll. Was that important? I think so.

Should we just forget about all artists who did unpleasant things, and deny the importance of their art? That would be absurd.

Why does it have to be one or the other, anyway? Remember him as man who sometimes acted like an asshole, AND as an artist crucial to the unfolding of the twentieth century. He was, undeniably, both.

We all have faults. Some of us have major faults. But I wish I had a tenth of his musical talent. IMHO he was one of the most underrated musical talents of the last 60 years. Sometimes the greatest creators are the most flawed human beings.

Isn't it a bit strange that Tina only made half decent music when she was with Ike?
After the split she went on to do awful 'white' rock schlock and left her black musical roots far behind.

Close by........Its a 'Burgherism alright, but a lot of that extends out to Steubenville and that area of eastern Ohio. Also my Dad was a railroader and he ran to Pittsburgh (Conway and Pitcairn Yards).

Tis very sad
about poor Ike
He'd made up music
we all like
The wall of sound
Has lost a brick
So don't dismiss him
as a prick

Yes, it really complex to maintain two radically different opinions but this is a good case. I can still admire the art but despise the man. I can even do the reverse!

Nicely put WLD.

I don't agree with the man's behaviour but he made good music.

The comments on this thread got me thinking about how many of our 'idols' we would admire if we knew what they were like away from the spotlight. I have a feeling that there might not be too many left to look up to. That sort of talent can come with a price.

Sorry jacqui, but I have to disagree on this one. Some prices are too high.

Of course he only beat her to the ground a few times and that was due to booze and drugs. He probably should be cut some some slack since he said he had reformed. Probably true.....I mean he hadn't had a felony arrest since, uh, let's see here......hmmm....May of 2007.

I read he was ushered in to the afterlife to the sound of live gospel. That's nice. Maybe he can get a room with Aileen Wuornos.

Maybe I've just got a real blind spot on this one. No more posts from me here.

I think she took her roots with her, and she was great both before and after.

Ike might have been a great musician, but it was Tina who stood out. It makes sense to remember him for what he did, both the good and the bad. You can't separate those qualities and ignore what you want. He probably should have been locked up AND he made good music.

It's sad when a fellow musican dies, so where is your resepct for your fellow man, I don't care what he did all I care about is the music and what he achevied in the music buisness.

RIP Ike

I never did listen to his music. Nor did I follow the events in his life either before or after Tina. Having said that, I hope his death was easy. Seems his life wasn't.

Hi Kids: Oh well, maybe 'cause it's getting near Christmas, but all of this got me thinking about Pope John Paul II, (yes, and all the issues, both for and against) who after being shot, and losing 3/4 of his blood, pardoned his assailant. Then the images of him "ministering to the flock", feeble and weary, until it was his time to go...

And yes, the references and accusations are endless: Ike(beatings, drugs), James Brown(guns), Chuck Berry(nude photos), Britney Spears(=Britney Spears), George Bush(WOW)...

And who among us can truly say as we look in the mirror, "you ain't got nuthin' on me!?"

I just thought the obit was about respect and dignity for the departed, my mistake.

I agree that we can admire someone's musical talent and still abhor their personal lives. One of my musical idols is Huddie Lead Better. He was also a twice convicted murderer.
