Does anyone have lyrics for a song called "The Alphabet Song" (I think that's what it's called, or perhaps that's the reason I can't find it!). I don't mean the "A,B,C, D..." one of course as sung in kindergarten, but a song that talks about how the meaning of words has changed in a generation. Does it sound familiar?

How about this:

The Alphabet Song

When Johnny Jones was serenading Mary,
He sure could quote a lot of poetry
But he'd much rather tell her
what he learned in his speller
When they both attended PS thirty-three....

(chorus)
"A," you're adorable, "B," you're so beautiful,
"C," you're a cutie full of charms.
"D," you're a darling and "E," you're exciting
And "F," you're a feather in my arms.
"G," you look good to me, "H," you're so heavenly,
"I," you're the one I idolize.
"J," we're like Jack and Jill, "K," you're so kissable,
"L," is the lovelight in your eyes.

"M," "N," "O," "P," I could go on all day.
"Q," "R," "S," "T," alphabetically speaking, you're OK.

U," made my life complete, "V," means you're very sweet,
Double-"U" "X" "Y" "Zee."
It's fun to wander through the alphabet with you
To tell you what you mean to me.
(repeat the chorus)

There is a Sailor's/Fisherman's Alphaber which begins:

A is for anchor that hangs on our bow.

There is also a scatological alphabet song which we don't talk about!

Thanks fellahs,

the two songs sound interesting. ~What kind of tune accompanied the first one (BTMP)? Was it a jazz of folk tune?

The song I'm thinking of though, was about words now in common usage that a generation ago had different meanings. I think it was called "The Alphabet Song" though it wasn't really about the alphabet. Maybe it was called the "Word Soup Song" or something like that, with 'word' in the title. A guy I met once played it well on the guitar and it was one of those catchy tunes you think to yourself you must learn (like Monty Python's Galaxy Song). There wasn't time at the time to jot down all thye lyrics, so I we exchanged my e-mail address for a promise to send the lyrics. Promises, promises....

Hi,

I'd say this sounds a bit like the Silly Slang Song. It's not actually an alphabet, but there are words in a row being described, which might give that impression.

If it's not what you're looking for, it's still worth a read and a chuckle,
BFN,

'The Alphabet Song' (as posted here by BTMP) was sung to me by me old mum each evening as she cuddled me on her knee just before bed-time, back in my early childhood. She was a fantastic singer with a wonderful voice, and it's a lovely memory.

They don't write 'em like that any more! Aaaaaaaahhh!

In MY (Not Very) Humble opinion , the best alphabet song was put together by my old mate and Mudcatter Trayton , and is a Dyslexic Alphabet song , with some SUPERB lines - like Z is for Xenophobia , a morbid fear of Buddhists .

A is for aurses, Before and after, C for sealions, Deformation, E for B and Georgie Best, F for vescence, G for Gesus, H for Rachel. I for an eye, Jay for Washington, K for cough, L for leather, M for embrocatin, N for eggs, O for a decent pint, P for Relief, Q for a pee, R for Negus, S for essence, U for me, V for Las Vegas, W for two of me, X for escema, Y for googness do I bother, Time for Zed said Bebedee

some bits are comprehensible only to those of advanced years, many need to be said out loud.

I got a song years ago from somewhere which starts A is for as I walked out like all good songs begin, I do it as the beginners guide to folk singing but it is lost on most Aussies

A You're Adorable (The Alphabet Song) was a standard popular song, not exactly jazzy though. You can see the sheet music at the Levy Collection. It's under copyright so I can't link you to the sheet music images, but you can see it in a pdf file there. Rather than link you directly to the pdf, I'll point you to the search page: Levy Search; if you put adorable in the first search box and search the song will be the first one you get. You can download the pdf from there, or look at it online if you want.

Thanks for the link Mysha,

yes, it was actually the silly slang song i was looking for. I was doubly delighted to find all those other funny Eric Bogle songs. They are perfect for singing between more soulful folk songs when yiou can see the audience getting heavy with the irony of the world (not to mnetion the singer!) a la Dylan.

There's always the Morcambe and Wise version...

# A! You're adorable
B! You're so beautiful
C! You're a cutie full of charm
It's fun to wonder through, the alphabet with you
But what are we goin to do about him? #
