Is anyone else here familiar with the 'Padre Choristers?'

Franciscan seminarians at St. Anthony's Seminary at Mission Santa
Barbara (California) in the late 50's/early 60's.

They put out two albums, 'Songs of the California Missions'
and 'Christmas at Mission Santa Barbara.' The former was
narrated by Bing Crosby, and I think only available as a set
of 45's. The latter was available on '45 or as an EP. Both RCA.

All in Spanish.

They were directed by Fr. Owen da Silva, who also did the
arrangements.

Two of my cousins, John and Jim Cosgrove, were members of the
group; Jim was the tenor soloist. A sweet, high Irish tenor whose
voice I've always envied. He went on to be ordained 'Fr. Ernan.'
Both have passed away.

Since a family member (a priest!) was in the group, I literally
grew up with this music. It was our favorite family Christmas
music, on both sides of the family.

As a 'labor of love' I used Audacity to
clean up a noisy copy of the Christmas album, putting the EP on
the first track with no need to flip the record. Then I cut out
the kind of cheesy organ and narration and did separate tracks
for just the musical 'meat.'

Naturally, when I finished this, the Mission gift shop put both
recordings up for sale on a single CD for $9.95. Available on-line.

Good stuff!

The CD is for sale here.

Just be forewarned, it has the 50/60's sensibility that needed to
'gussy up' things that were real and genuine--- the same imperative
that stuck violins behind early Weavers recordings.

If you can get past that, the singing is superb.

I'm so happy to find this, It's the MOST beautiful Christmas music I've ever heard and I'm glad it's on it's way to me. I was just tellng my husband yesterday about this music and he told me to search online. I also grew up with it as well as grew up in SB.

I grew up with this Christmas music.
It is still wonderful and inspiring to me.
My uncle Fr Ben Henderson (OFM) sang in the Choristers while going to the seminary school in the late 30's. He came back several times and was involved in the recordings.
Does anyone have any information about this ?
I would love to hear from you!

Stashed in my parents closet was a box of old records. There is a "box set" (2-78lps) of the "Mission Music Of California". It has a printed history of the recording inside.

As a native of Santa Barbara, I grew up with this Christmas album. I have at least three (pristine) LP copies of it gathered through attrition of family members...I am listening to it right now, and enjoying it as much as I did when it first was released, guessing mid to late 1950s...St. Anthony's Seminary is no longer a seminary. It was being used as Santa Barbara Middle School for a few years and then I lost track.
