Subject: Folk Radio?

We've had a couple of threads on here recently mentioning internet radio stations specialising in folk or tradtitional folk.

Now I want to listen to one, I seem not to have bookmarked them!

Anyons point me in the right direction?

Hi Richard.

I'm actually delighted that This Radio Station has eventually come online.

Before you click the link, I must tell you that it is a new station recently opened up by the Norwegian State Broadcaster: NRK, and the name of the station is 'Alltid Folkemusikk' ('Always Folkmusic')

The site is in Norsk (of course), but if you click on the link "Høyr Alltid Folkemusikk direkte" (Listen Live to A.F), a media player will open and the station will automatically load.

I just re-formatted recently and my bookmarks are in a bookmark, somewhere, but search for 'Clare FM', 'Downtown Radio' and the Tommy Sands Show (Belfast). Radio na Gaeltachta (available from the RTÉ website)...

If you fancy something a little out of the ordinary, try Norsk Folkemusikk. The Norwegian Folk scene is starting to liberate itself in the past few years, due in no small part in my opinion, to the example that has been shown by Irish Traditional Music.

I've been based in Norway, now, for 14 years, and I've seen the gradual increase in confidence of the musicians, and the music.

B.

Folk Alley has a 24-hour folk stream, a separate "new artists" stream and (right now) a holiday stream.

I have a folk show on a community radio station called Sheffield Live!, "Thank Goodness It's Folk". Broadcast each Friday 10.00 am - 1200 noon

Live on 93.2 FM and www.sheffieldlive.org and normally via an easily found podcast.

This week's show for some reason has not loaded into the TGIF slot though it is still available by going through the daily pages.

Next week I am not live, back on January 4th.

Over the Xmas holidays I am hoping to get a myspace wqhere I can load up the playlist each week.

There is 24 hour streaming on www.folkradio.co.uk/index.php

And there's Mike Harding.

There are some stations listed at...

http://folkopedia.efdss.org/Media#Internet_Radio

I would be delighted if people would add to the list.

Any problems in subscribing to the wiki can be referred to me via a PM.

Hober Radio is a well-known net only station..."unvarnished radio for the internet" or something is how they put it. They often play music from Mudcatters such as Art Thieme, Rick Fielding, Kendall Morse and others. It is a real eclectic mix of music from all around the world.

WUMB is "Boston's Folk Radio." I usually like the Traditional Folk show done by Sandy Sheehan. It's on right now. Be sure to look over on the lefthand side for "Folk Streams." The French one is really neat! Their Christmas one, over at Live365 is really nice, too.

Brendydarlin'...can't get that link to work. I clicked on the "Høyr Alltid Folkemusikk direkte" but it just came to another page. I clicked on a likely looking link, which did bring up some kind of player with a bunch of different graphics and places to click, but no playing. What am I doing wrong, what words should I look for, please? Thanks!

Brian O'Donovan does a great job at WGBH out of Boston with his program "Celtic Journeys."

Hiya kat

When you click on the "Høyr Alltid Folkemusikk direkte" link, it brings me to the main Net Radio page, but after a few seconds a 'pop-up' window comes up (the Media Player) and it starts playing immediately without you having to to do anything more.

I think the channel may be off-line/air now, as it's 4.15 am here, and I tried the link, and although the media player comes up, there's nothing playing, but when I made the link, just after midnight, I think. It worked then.

I hope you try it again at some stage, kat. New stations usually go out of their way in their first few months to try and include everything, so it'd be worth a bookmarking, anyway..

:-)

B.

"Make it Folky" from a community radio station in Cambridge has a really good monthly show covering the Folk Music of Britain and Ireland, playing an interesting and diverse range of source, revival, and contemporary recordings. Show is available to listen to online or in MP3 Podcast form - see http://www.209radio.co.uk/shows/profile.php?show=makeitfolky

Well worth a listen

Whole Wheat Radio from Alska is very entertaining.
Not too hyper, runs on a shoe string and concentrates on the indies.
WUMB out of Boston has already been mentioned and is a good second choice for me.

I started to listen to www.folkradio.co.uk/index.php (as mentioned by FolkieDave) a couple of months back when it described itself as providing English and Celtic music. It did that superbly! I listened to it at every opportunity.

It now describes itself as providing eclectic and roots music. It's material profile has certainly changed, and I find the output is now rarely to my taste which is English & Celtic music. It obviously suits someone, just not me.

BBC Radio Scotland and BBC Radio Nan Gaidheal provide 'Listen Again' so they are my prefered internet radio stations.

It's down to musical preference.

John

Hi,

Celtic Music Radio is currently streaming a "test transmission", and we'll be fully on-air, both on the internet stream and on 1530kHz in the Glasgow area, by mid-January.

http://www.celticmusicradio.net

We'll be broadcasting live from the Celtic Connections festival during January.

BruceCMR, I am listening, just now, and really LIKE what I am hearing! If I lived over there, I'd definitely come to your Burns Night. Thanks for letting us know about your station. Can't wait to tell my friend who is a native Glaswegian.

Brendy, I am going to try that other one in a few minutes, before I go to bed for Christmas Eve!
