Some of the best folksongs in Russia come from the Cossacks. Their choirs are stunning. Many of the songs deal with military campaigns, or dying soldiers (kinda like border ballads), but there are also some amazing love songs and humrous ones too.
I think they desrve their own thread, so here goes.

Arguably the most recorded, if not famous, of all Cossack songs. It originated with the Don Cossack Host, but spread to all of them
It's based on an incident in the 1780s when a Nogai Tartar horde, 16 thousand strong, attacked a caravan defended by Ataman Platov, of Napoleonic fame.

There are plenty of variants, here is the most common:

Ëþáî, áðàòöû, ëþáî

Chorus.

It's delightful, brothers, delightful

As to the Black Yerik, as to the Black Yerik
the Cossacks rode - forty thousand horses,
and the bank was covered, and the bank was covered
by hundreds of bodies, slashed, shot.

Chorus (repeated 2x):
It's delightful, brothers, delightful, delightful, brothers, to live.
With our Ataman (Cossack military leader) we'll never find cause to mourn.

But the first shot, the first shot,
the first shot struck my horse,
and the second shot, the second shot,
the second shot, the fool, struck me.

Chorus.

Our Ataman knows whom he picks,
The company struck up, they've forgotten me.
They still have their freedom and and Cossack's share,
I recieved the dusty and warm ground.

Chorus.

My wife will mourn, then she'll marry another,
will marry my mate, will forget about me,
it grieves me to roam the wide plains no more,
it sad for my old mother and pale-horse.

chorus.

My light-brown curls, my pale eyes
will grow the wild grass,
my white bones, my brave heart
will bring the kites and ravens from across the steppes.

chorus.

Chyorni Voron.

The black raven, the other oft-recorded song, is one of the oldest Cossack ballads, but the date and author are disputed. Compare and contrast with the twa corbies.
It's very haunting.

Black Raven

Black raven, black raven,
why do you circle overhead?
can't you wait your spoils,
black raven, I'm not yours!

Why do you spread your talons
over my head?
or do you hope for your spoils?
black raven, I'm not yours!

I'll bind my mortal wound
with my kerchief, a gift to me,
and then we will
discuss the matter.

Fly to my place,
tell my mum,
you tell my kind one,
that for the motherland I fell.

Carry my bloody kerchief
to my dear true-love.
tell her - she is free,
I have married another.

I've taken a quiet-unassuming bride
in an empty field under the shrubs,
The matron has been crowned (Russian Orthdox wedding rituals)-
My lively sabre.

The unerring arrow has crowned too,
amidst the fateful battle.
I can see my death approaching,
black raven, I'm all yours.

The last two lines are repeated.

Unharness the Horses is an Ukrainian folk song, popularised in Russia through the Black Sea Cossacks. When the Zaporozhian sietch (home to the fictional Taras Bulba, the baggy-trousers, top-knot and moustachio look) was dismantled, most of the Zaporozhian Cossacks settled along the Black Sea, bringing along with them not only their dialect, but songs too. Khloptsi is the Ukranian for lads.

Розпрягайте, хлопцi, конi

Розпрягайте, хлопцi, конi

Iз другою говорив.

Вона ростом невеличка,
Ще й лiтами молода,
Руса коса до пояса,
В косi лента голуба.

Та не в стрiчку я влюбился
I не в русую косу.
А у дiвчину влюбився,
В ïï дiвочу красу.

Rosprihaitye, khloptzi, koni

Rosprihaitye, khloptzi, koni
ta lyegaitye sachivat,
a ya pidu v sad zelyony,
v sad krinichyenky kopat.

Kopav, kopav krinichyenku
u vyshnyevomu sadu...
chi nye viydye divchinonka
rano-vrantzi pa vodu?

Vyshla, vyshla divchinonka
v sad vyshnevy vodu brat,
a za nyeyu kozachyenko
vyedye konya napuvat.

Prosiv, prosiv vidyerechka,
vona yomu nye dala,
dariv, dariv z ruki pyersten,
vona yovo nye vzyala.

Znayu, znayu, divchinonko,
chim ya tebye razgnivyv:
sho ya vchora iz vyechora
iz drugoyu govoryv.

Vona rostom nyevyelichka,
sho iy litamy moloda,

Ta nye v strichku ya vlyubylsa
i nye v rusuyu kasu.
a u divchynu vlyubivsa,

Unharness, lads, the horses

Unharness, lads, the horses
and lay down for to sleep,
but I will go into the garden green,
in the garden a well for to dig.

I've dug, dug a well
in the cherry garden...
Will the girl go
in the early hours to fetch water?

The girl has gone, has gone
into the cherry garden water for to fetch,
and behind her a Cossack,
leading a horse to be watered.

He asked, he asked for buckets,
she did not give them to him,
he gave her, he gave her, the ring from off his finger,
she would not take it.

I know, I know, lass,
how I upset you:
that yesterday and the day before
with another I conversed.

She is not large of stature,
and her years they are few,
a light-brown plait reaching down to her waist,
in the plait is a ribbon blue.

It's not her hair that I fell in love with,
and not her light-brown plait.
but with a young maiden,
with her maiden's beauty.

Oh, Frost, Frost!

Originating with the Siberian Cossacks, this song became very popular in the rest of Russia. Frequently performed and recorded.

ÎÉ, ÌÎÐÎÇ, ÌÎÐÎÇ!

Îé, ìîðîç-ìîðîç, íå ìîðîçü ìåíÿ,
Íå ìîðîçü ìåíÿ, ìîåãî êîíÿ.

Íå ìîðîçü ìåíÿ, ìîåãî êîíÿ,
Ìîåãî êîíÿ áåëîãðèâîãî,

Ìîåãî êîíÿ áåëîãðèâîãî,
Ó ìåíÿ æåíà, îõ, ðåâíèâàÿ.

Ó ìåíÿ æåíà, îõ, êðàñàâèöà,
Æäåò ìåíÿ äîìîé, æäåò-ïå÷àëèòñÿ.

Êàê ïðèäó äîìîé íà çàêàòå äíÿ,
Îáíèìó æåíó, íàïîþ êîíÿ.

Îáíèìó æåíó, íàïîþ êîíÿ.
Òû, ìîðîç-ìîðîç, íå ìîðîçü ìåíÿ.

Âòîðàÿ ñòðîêà êóïëåòîâ ïîâòîðÿåòñÿ

Oh, Frost, Frost!

Oy, maroz-maroz, nye maros menya,
nye maros menya, mayevo kanya.

Nye maros menya, mayevo kanya,
mayevo kanya byelogrivavo,

mayevo kanya byelogrivavo,
u menya zhyena, okh, ryevnivaya.

U menya zhyena, okh, krasavitsa,
zhdyot menya damoy, zhdyot-pechalitsa.

Kak pridu damoy na zakatye nya,
abnimu zhyenu, napoyu kanya.

Abnimu zhyenu, napoyu kanya.
Ty, maroz-maroz, nye maros menya.

The second line is always repeated.

Oh, Frost, Frost!

Oy, frost-frost, do not freeze me,
do not freeze me and my horse.

Do not freeze me and my horse,
my white horse,

My white horse,
I have a wife, oh, she is a jealous one.

I have a wife, oh, she is pretty.
She awaits me at home, waits and sorrows.

As soon as I reach home at the setting of the sun,
I shall embrace my wife, water my horse.

Embrace my wife, water my horse.
You, frost-frost, do not freeze me.

The description has it wrong, nothing erotic about the song, but good rendition, in an actual folk-setting.

"Kogda My Byli na Voynye" (When We Were at War), though often mistaken for a folk song, is actualy modern, David Samoilov's poem "Hussar" set to music in the 1980s by the bard Victor Stolyarov.
Here is a link to Stolyarov's website, with several different renditions. My favorite is Pelageya's, the last one listed.

Kagda my budyem na vaynye,
kagda my budyem na vaynye,
navstryechu pulyem palyechu
na varanom svayom kanye,
navstryechu pulyem palyechu
na varanom svayom kanye.

Kagda my budyem na vaynye...

When we were at war

When we were at war,
when we were at war,
each of us thought of his own
true-love or of his wife.
each of us thought of his own
true-love or of his wife.

And I, of course, could have thought,
and I, of course, could have thought,
when I glanced at my pipe,
at the blueish smoke,
when I glanced at my pipe,
at the blueish smoke.

But I didn't think on anything,
but I didn't think on anything,
I merely smoked my pipe
with bitter Turkish tobbacco.
I merely smoked my pipe
with bitter Turkish tobbacco.

Oh, how you once lied to me,
how you once lied to me,
your maiden's heart,
has long-ago belonged to someone else.
your maiden's heart,
has long-ago belonged to someone else.

I merely await the bullet flying true,
I merely await the bullet flying true,
in order to quench my sadness
and to put an end to our emnity.
in order to quench my sadness
and to put an end to our emnity.

When we will be at war,
when we will be at war,
to meet the bullets I'll fly,
on my black steed,
to meet the bullets I'll fly,
on my black steed.

When we will be at war...

I don't know how Volgadon's posts look on your monitors guys, but apart from the original lyrics to "Unharness, lads, the horses" that display properly in Cyrillic characters, all the other Russian lyrics show as a whole lot of accented letters: vowels with acute, grave and circumflex accents, tildes, cedilles and dieresis etc...

Monique: I think there's a way you can change the options on your browser to make the Cyrillic characters display properly, but don't ask me how; I'm quite content to leave them as gibberish, since I can't read, write, or speak Russian anyhow! I think it was explained in some Mudcat thread somewhere. You might try looking at the other threads about Russian songs.

What's happened to Volgadon anyway?

Given where he seems to be, his absence is a bit worrying.

One might add:

Stenka Razin. According to Wikipedia, the best-known version is by Dmitri Sudovnikov; but Mudcat has revealed several versions with interesting variations of plot, so I would be inclined to call this a folk song.

Cossack Lullaby, by Mikhail Lermontov.

I must say that, on the strength of those two songs, I am not inclined to wish I were a Cossack.

I would supply URLs, but I am afraid that if I go and find them, what I have already written will disappear.

Here are the lyrics to the first song GUEST pointed to on YouTube (Ljubo, bratsi, ljubo).

Oops, sorry, I see Volgadon already posted the lyrics (and semi-phonetic transliteration) early on in this thread.

The second song GUEST linked has the Cyrillic lyrics in the info section (click "more info" in the description box in the upper right.)

I recommend "Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World," if you have not already read it. Although it is about the Mongols rather than the Cossacks per se, you will see some similar cultural relationships, especially the significance of the word "black." There are too many ramifications to cover in any thread.

My Dad used to sing us the Cosaack Lullaby and sing it to our children. Even though I no longer speak Russian and my wife never has she used to hum the tune to our kids and now hums it to our grandson, William. It still works to get to get babies to sleep! Maybe they subconciously know the words and are scared into oblivion:-)

I am a Cossack BTW - It is passed through the male line and because my Dad is and his Dad was, I am, my sons are and so is William! Causes no end of fun with my eldest lad - he is married to a nice Jewish girl:-) Our line is from the Kuban Cossacks BTW - Descendents of the Zaporozhy - Those of Taras Bulba fame. Wonder if I can grow a topknot? :-)

Cheers

DeG
