(Lies direct the world, honesty rarely brings money,
Everyone wants to be a winner, whoever loses remains all alone;
But many a will is possible through the imagination
You die to live and you take to give;)
Once a year everything comes true
At Christmas don't forget
Make sure you don't forget it.

(Lüge dirigiert die Welt, Ehrlichkeit bringt selten Geld,
Jeder möcht' Sieger sein, wer verliert bleibt ganz allein;
Doch manch Will' ist möglich durch die Fantasie
Du stirbst um zu leben und nimmst um zu geben;)
Einmal im Jahr wird alles wahr
Zu Weihnacht vergiss nicht,
Vergiss es gewiss nicht.

Thanks to everyone for your help. This is an outstanding song that of course does not get anywhere near enough play. (Is anyone else bothered by the lack of imagination displayed by the programmers of stations that play Xmas music 24-7 during the season?)
Perry's German is actually pretty good when you consider he only did this specifically for this song.

The German part of the song sounds more rhythmic than the english part.

Here's a version from youtube. I think it's pretty close. Perry is indeed singing the words right.

"Leute die regiern die Welt
Ehrlichkeit bringt selten geld.
Jeder mag sicher sein
Wird er jemals ganz allein
Doch was ist moeglich?
Lustigkeit sei Sieg.
Musiert zu leb
Zu Gib und zu Geb
Einmal im Jahr wird alles wahr
Zur Weihnacht vergiss nicht
Vergiss es gewiss nicht..."
The whole needs a Christmas tree

I've only studied German in school, and I must say that this doesn't make much sense to me. But listening to the words while reading this makes me feel that it's quite close.

That's right, I was wrong. vergessen is to forget.

I just realized that instead of "zu schlafen" (to sleep) it might be "zu schaffen" ("to work", in the southern German dialects, or otherwise "to do"). "vergiss nicht" means "don't forget".

Yes, it's not easy to figure it out, and the pronunciation sounds mumbled (to my ears). Here's what I make of it:

(cannot hear the very beginning)... Jesus
Helligkeit bringt solch' genuss
Jedermann Sieger sein
Bleibt bei etwas ganz allein
Noch mal will ich Party
So viel Fantasie
Zu schlafen, zu leben, und diesmal, zu geben
Einmal im Jahr, wird alles wahr
Zu Weinacht' vergiss nicht, vergiss dies Gedicht' nicht
(then it goes into English)

Hope this helps, Don

ps if you need a translation let me know

I gave it a try, but not much luck. For one thing, the sound engineer brought in the choir very softly, gradually raising the volume until you can almost hear them. The first words are very hard to hear. After a while Perry starts singing "german" over them, but I think he garbled it.

Y'all do realize that the choir is singing a couple lines in German then a couple in English, don't you?

I can make out just enough to show they are indeed singing German at times

zu Weihnacht - at Christmas
vergissen - forgive
zu leben - to love
zu geben - to give

I'm pretty sure a native speaker could figure it out if s/he has really good hearing.

There's an excerpt recording here (click) at Amazon, but it doesn't have anything of the German part. There's a video that plays the Perry Como recording here (click), but it's very hard to understand the singing of the boys' choir. Can anybody make out a phrase or two from the song?

very nice, but Its not clear that the German words are a translation. They are sung as a boys' chorus.

I know these aren't correct but this is what Babelfish did with it:
(We need Wolfgang here)Sorry, but I don't know where the line breaks go.

A couple days late, but I'd rather ask about this Christmas song now than wait another 11 months. It's a song made for a movie: "The Odessa File" and sung by Perry Como. I am not taken much with Christmas carols, but I was taken by this, an early collaboration between Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, it occurs during the opening scenes of the movie where the main character, Jon Voight, is driving to a meeting.

Briefly, I am after the German lyrics if it is proper to have them printed. The English lyric is available on the net and goes like this:

Christmas Dream
from the original 1974 Columbia Pictures film
soundtrack "The Odessa File"
Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber
and lyrics by and Tim Rice
with German lyrics by André Heller

Watch me now, here I go, all I need's a little snow!
Starts me off, sets the theme,
helps me dream my Christmas dream,
Every year I dream it, hoping things will change,
An end to the crying, the shouting, the dying,
And I hope you will dream it too!
It's Christmas,
Remember?
We've got to remember!

So, light the light, I'm home tonight,
I need you to warm me, to calm me, to love me!
To help me to dream my Christmas dream!

Crazy things, said an' done,
Every single day but one!
Every night should, I believe,
Be the same as Christmas Eve,
Nights should all be silent,
Days should all slow down,
An end to the hurry, the noise and the worry!
And I hope you believe that too!
It's Christmas,
Remember?
Does no one remember?

The whole world needs, a Christmas dream,
We need it to warm us, to calm us, to love us . . .
To help us to dream our Christmas dream!

( excluding German lyrics )

The whole world needs, a Christmas dream,
We need it to warm us, to calm us, to love us . . .
We need it to warm us, to calm us, to love us . . .
We need it to warm us, to calm us, to love us . . .
To help us to dream our Christmas dream!

from the original 1974 Columbia Pictures film
soundtrack "The Odessa File"
Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber
and lyrics by and Tim Rice
with German lyrics by André Heller
