What a roller coaster!! Thoughts are still with Mr. Paw and all of his relations who have been riding this frightening thing out. Considering that I've only had cyber communication with Catspaw for about three months, I can't imagine what it has been like to be at the epicenter of it all. My love and thoughts are with you.

I just got off the phone with Pat. He sounded tired, but good. He thinks that they have finally got this thing whipped. He is taking is time and doing everything they ask of him. He asked me to relay his best wishes, love and thanks for all the good thoughts. I would say he is tired and needs time, but I think our dear friend will be ready to jump in the litterbox soon.

Hi folks. Please forgive my absence. I am working a very tough program, mostly due to its size and it involves being on the road 7 days a week and 12 to 20 hour days. It is important stuff, though, so I have to stay in the saddle.

I am going to just do a synopsis of what has transpired since Saturday as I don't know what you know and what you don't. The last of it I received today. If some of it is redundant, I apologize, but I don't have time to read through all the posts. I have edited it down, but the comments are all Connie's. She continues to be amazed, and touched by all of you and your caring. She is convinced that your prayers are a major factor here.

May 15, 12:00 noon
P still loosing blood somewhere. all the tests they have run have not revealed from/to where. The GP told k this is about the worst of the worst situations...not sure if it's operable and if it is they (at that time ) weren't able to find a surgeon willing to operate. Since then they have located a doc who will talk to them about it if they do a couple more tests and he studies them a bit.) So for the meanwhile they are trying to buy time by continuing to transfuse him. There is an outside chance it could seal itself off (that would be in the miracle category), a little better chance that it is operable, a little better chance that they could find someone to do the surgery that is willing to take a risk, if none of these things happen then he would eventually "bleed out". They have run more tests and are still not sure where he is leaking.

May 15, 8:50 P.M.
Pat was stable enough for Karen to go home. RBC was only down .65 in about 24 hrs. The last test they ran yesterday revealed a "thingy" in the small intestine distal to the stomach and about a foot up from the large intestine. Karen questioned such a technical medical term to which the doc explained that it was a something. Feels that they have rule out a blockage, ischemic bowel, and necrosis. What ever it is it's about an inch. Karen called a little over an hour ago now and the news is that he reacquired two more units of blood during the day--so he's still leaking. Docs are concerned about problems from so great a number of transfusions...so now they have decided to go in. He is obviously a great surgical risk.

May 16, 7:40 A.M.
The 8:30 surgery has been moved up to 7:30. There is another surgery that needed to be done today. This one is 2-3 hrs. It is on surgery schedule as laparotomy possible bowel resection with scope. Pat was not yet medicated so i got to talk to him. He said he is hurting. "Let's rock 'n' roll and do something here--make a decision and get on with it". No surprise script there. He's feeling very positive about coming through this. There's nothing more really to say at this point, I know everyone is praying--that has to be the explanation for everyone being so calm about this. In truth I would hate to be you all...being away from "the action" nothing to do but keep checking e-mail for a word.

May 16, 2:30 P.M.
Pat is out of surgery. So those prayers were answered. 1 hr 45 min. They found a laceration in the small intestine about 15 down from the stomach and about 1-2 feet up from the colon. …They ended up removing 1 foot of small intestine and resectioning it. Now, as if there is not enough going on already...apparently unrelated to the aneurysm, CHF, COPD, what they found today was a tumor. Dr. Johnson told K that it is either lymphoma or adenocarcinoma they are not sure until histology gets finished with it. Since K works in histology she said she'll be going down in the a.m. and hand picking the pathologist to do this one. The doc mentioned that the lymph nodes were also enlarged. I don't recall whether or not she said they had removed any lymph nodes or not for biopsy or special study. It will be Tuesday before the histo results are available.

May 18, 12:00 A.M.
Dr told Pat today about tumor. K handpicked the Doc to do the histology work on Pat's removed section of bowel. Yesterday the surgeons' preliminary dx. was lymphoma or adenocarcinoma. but today the pathologist believes that it is a carcinoid tumor, which depending on where it originated can be either high risk benign or a lower risk malignant. Oncologist is to consult with them Tues. I will have more info then.

Saw Pat last nght. Color real good. Spoke clearly and made sense. Neither was the case on Thurs. and not totally on Fri.

May 18, 5:22 P.M.
The news of the day is: the lab has determined that the tumor is carcinoid, rather than lymphoma or adenosarcoma. They are going to keep an eye on Pat's liver they believe that if there were to be anything further from this to would effect the liver eventually. This is such a relief. And then you have to say but wait there are these other "time bombs"...but it's still a relief. If one were to believe in luck this would sure be a stroke of bad...but i prefer to use it as a reminder that we are to number our days--keep the priorities right.

It looks like Pat may be able to go home this weekend.

There you go folks, you are up to the minute, at least as far as I have it.

'Spaw, we care about you a great deal. Quit your screwing around and get better. I miss you, pal. Need you back. This place that we both (along with all the rest of the 'Catters) is lessened by your absence.

It has been a very bad day indeed. Just got the computer back up and running from its' trip to Ohio this past weekend. I thought that Pat looked pretty good on Sunday when I saw him and his spirits were certainly good. I talked with him briefly on Tues. evening right after he got home and Karen and the boys were in town picking up his meds. He said then that he was tired and was surprised how tired he felt after all that time in bed at the hospital. I wished him well, gave him my love and then got the call from Mike at 7 this am saying that Pat was back at the hospital. I have not talked with Karen today but she did talk with Karolyn, her sister, and Karolyn says that Karen sounded very frazzled and so very tired. It is very hard to be so far away when she and Pat and the boys are going through such a terrible time. It is, however, a great comfort to get on the "cat" and know that we are not alone here in Atlanta worrying and wondering what lies in store, but that we have so many cats with us. Mick, Katlaughing, Sandy et. al....Thank you. By the way, Sandy, when I was at the hospital with Pat on Sunday, he had me listen to you singing "When you and I were Young Maggie". He said that it made him cry, it was so beautiful. I listened and concur. I remember my father singing that to my mom in our kitchen at hom. A truly beautiful CD, Sandy that has given and will continue to give Pat great pleasure.

Connie, thankyou for being there for Karen and Pat and the boys. I would love to call you but seem to have misplaced your number. It is so very hard to be so very far away. Thank you again to you all........Clarence, Pat's Maw-in-law.

Thank you for the update; sorry it couldn't be better, but I know the love and care we all generate does have power and that we will all continue with our prayers and thoughts for our dear friends, 'Spaw and Karespaw.

Judging from what Connie wrote, I can see now, he was being a little too reassuring when I spoke to him on Monday; that would be like him though, to not want any of us to worry.

I give thanks for a full and complete recovery for our dear Pat; and ease and comfort for him and Karen and the boys. I give thanks for this or something better for the highest good of all concerned. So mote it be!

P.S. As I write this, there is a rainbow in the prairie sky.

Don't let up on the prayers and good thoughts, friends, Pat is having some problems. I got a full update but I will give you the most important details. 'Spaw was released from the hospital on Tuesday, but subsequently had a relapse and was taken back to the hospital and placed in ICU. What follows is the message that Connie left me. It is in her own shorthand style but it is self explanatory.

Tues afternoon he stops by school to say "hey" on his way home from hospitals. Did not look great. P did not want to hear this. Tries to convince me how much better he is than last week at this time--or two weeks ago for that matter...ok fine but we are not putting you in the chorus line--trust me. Blood pressure "amazingly low". goes home starts feeling nauseated. Black foul diarrhea. K alarmed. P in denial. Somewhere in here P goes to computer reads all (?) of mudcat and decides to lay down to think of what to say. This a.m. K gets up--P looks bad can't or at least is not getting up. K calls squad. P does not protest (something wrong here...) off to hospital. Nasogastric tube. vomits blood. hmmm, 4 units low. upper GI no problem. will do lower GI tomorrow. P bleeding (leaking) somewhere.

To all our friends, Catspaw came home yesterday. Things did not go well. By this morning he could not get up by himself and was very nauseated. I called the squad and he is back in the ICU at Fairfield Medical Center. His RBC count was 7.0, black tarry stools and coffee grounds emesis. Technical jargon for bleeding somewhere. They did an upper GI and found nothing. Will do lower GI tomorrow. Transfused 4 units today and raised count to only 9.0. Will probably transfuse more tonight. He's scared and feeling pretty lousy right now. I'm sorry I was not in touch this last weekend. When he is feeling better he keeps me pretty busy. Much better than now when I can only sit and wait. Must get the kids to Connie's and get back to the hospital. Will keep you posted

Now, when Catspaw is up and fully functional again, we'll all have to get him to show us photos of some of his own dulcimers. Bill D will surely post a few in the family album, if 'sPaw will send some snaps for him to scan. When we were told that 'sPaw did some serious lutherie, I sort of assumed his reference to "dulcimer" meant "hammered," but since Jeri plays both lap and hammered, we can assume this to be "on topic" for the Catspaw thread.

Sure would be good to get an update from the litterbox, wouldn't it? Are you there, Karen? Sis-in-law? Mom-in-law from Atlanta? Is ol' 'sPaw sayin', "Please, gals, I'd rather do it myself!"? (creative punctuation to match creative spelling) Soon, we hope.

Ah, Jeri, you're gonna git along just fine here. You already sound as Mudcateerie as the rest of us! Good for you for doing your background research, so....are you a guvmunt plant?**smile** (Note to everyone else: watch for them black helleecopters around NH!)

And, you might of noticed, we often have "thread creep" around here, where things other than the original subject, just sorta crop up, like info on who you are! But if you really want to know more and to tell us more, check out the various threads on what does a mudcatter do, how old is a mudcatter, where do mudcatters live, etc. The flowers and garden decor is a recent one which tells a lot about where we all live.

Glad you've joined in. I've got in-laws all over NH; really love to visit there as they are a lot of fun and I really love NH.

Thanks to everyone for the "welcome" messages! (I sort of feel like I shouldn't be writing about myself in a thread about someone else, but this probably falls under the heading of "BS." BS is good - makes things grow.)

I'm 44, single w/no kids, and recently retired from the Air Force (Public Health Technician,) bought a house in NH and haven't started seriously looking for another job yet. I'm trying to convert the back yard from a landfill to a space for parties and a garden. I play fiddle and sing and own several banjos, pennywhistles, a hammered and a mountain dulcimer on which I mess around. My favorite type of condom is the kind without the spermicide and lubricant, because they taste funny when you blow them up to make balloons.

I've been reading past contributions from Catspaw, trying to get to know him better. Wit and wisdom - if Sandy can have a crush on all the womenfolk in his family, I can have a crush on him, can't I? I can't wait until the doctors let him have his laptop, but if they're trying to keep his blood pressure down...

Welcome Jeri, to the best community in cyber space. If we could all get ourselves together in one spot, just think of the endless hours of music and fun that could be had! Our community would be the envy of the whole world. As you have been told, and I'm sure have learned from your reading of the threads, this is a very complex group made up of performing musicians to kitchen players. But as you see, regardless of anyones position in life, we all care about one another. I, myself play (and the term play is disputed by more than one!) a banjo, mostly Old Time using clawhammer and a home made lap dulcimer. I fall in the kitchen player category. (and there are times I have been asked to take it one step further, ie:"Go to the garage with that thang") Enjoy.....

New Mudcatter here, and I thought I'd post my first message in the Catspaw thread, seeing as it's what got me to join.

I've been reading the discussion forum sporadically for a while. I started reading about Catspaw one day last week and continued reading every message in that thread. By the time I was finished, the front of my shirt was completely tear-drenched. I was caught up in the life of a man I'd never met and astounded by the outpouring of love from y'all. This is more of a community than many hometowns.

I got to meet the Patons this weekend. Got all choked up when I talked to Sandy (Hi!) about reading about 'Spaw and promised to join.

Okay,Mudders, Big Mick is going in a gazillion directions this week with big rat-tee-fi-kay-shun doin's and I needed a good excuse to call 'Spaw, so here it is 4pm MDT/USA and I just hung up from talking with him.

He is doing really well! All of the numbers have been adding up for about 4-5 days now. If one of his docs hadn't been gone today, he probably would've been cut loose to go home today. As it is that doc will be gone all week, but 'Spaw expects to be home in a few days anyway. He had a message for us composed and was going to have Karespaw post it, but decided to wait because he thought he'd be on here today himself.

He has been enjoying the cd's. Mentioned going to sleep to the sweet tones of SandyGramps singing in his ear.**smile**

Let's keep those good thoughts, well wishes, and prayers going his way. We've all been given a reprieve and for that I am heartily thankFULL!

We have to keep in mind that this is Mother's Day weekend, and as I recall Cat-Maw-in-Law was due back up from Atlanta and of course, the boys, while I'm sure concerned about their Pa, need to have Karen's attention to celebrate her special day. So there IS a "Concerened One." We Unitarians are always wonderin'! seriously, Kat: thanks for expanded info. I'll bet it was a trip to get that phone call. Since I've been telling my wife abt Catspaw's troubles, she has also gotten interested in Pat - and the Mudcat! Of course, being a very experienced medical social worker, it's no surprise to her when love 'n emotional support are involved in a turn around from the precipice!

'Spaw: be a good kitty, 'n don't exert yerself more than your medical team thinks wise.... for now!

I talked to him on Friday afternoon. He'd been up for a thirty minute shower and sounded GOOD! Said he'd probably be in there another week. Everything is supposed to heal itself pretty well. His BP is good and he is out of ICU. karen has been printing out the threads for him and he's really been enjoying them.

When he called (I've never spoken with him before) he asked for Kathleen LaFrance, so it threw me; then he asked what I was doing. I asked who it was, then he asked if I was by any chance blowing up a possum's ass (ala the ocarina)? THEN I KNEW IT WAS OUR BELOVED 'SPAW!!!!

Well on his way to recovery and very grateful to still be around to be a "Mudder".

Catspaw....don't EVEN think of not doing EXACTLY what your medical team ORDERS!!!!! Truth is, we've been pretty busy here and I don't think the litter box has been cleaned yet....could get NASTY if you were to be sent to your corner for misbehavin'. Sure is good to hear all the good news, 'Spaw....But like all those with naught but your best interest at heart have been saying, do wait until you are sure the strength has sufficiently returned. I have headed back home, now that you are out of the ICU, and on the floor. I too wonder about that, as someone else did earlier, where there just no more beds avilable? I've sent Paw and Cletus and the two Regs on in search of you. You may recall the third Reg is posing as me at the Niel Young Center, he seems to be happy doing it so why change things now? The minner, last I saw was still happily floatin' between the 10 and 80 mile marks on the speedometer.

Sandy's right Catspaw - you know we're all desperate to hear from you, but I'm pretty sure we'd all rather wait a bit and have you back to full strength, than be the inadvertant cause of any kind of setback by you exerting yourself!! Stick in there darl', if my dad is anything to go by then miracles do happen, and you will get back to your old self - and quicker than you think! No matter how rough you feel just now, it DOES get better - and you won't always feel this fragile. ICU is no joke, but the nursing staff who work in it are truly God's chosen people, they perform miracles every day. Glad thats happened for you and yours as well as me and mine. Take your time, we'll wait for as long as it takes....

Me, too! He sounds great and very resolved to do what it takes to get better. Took a half hour shower, or so he said. Guess it wasn't JUST the litter box, huh?

It makes me heart sing, not only to speak with him, but also to hear how much we've ALL meant to him, esp. our postings. "Karespaw" has been printing them out for him to read and I think he was as amazed as we were with ourselves and what an incredible community of caring people we really are. I KNOW that has played a good part in how well our 'Spaw is doing. Makes ya feel good to be alive and be a proud part of this little part of the world!

Just got off the phone with Catspaw and as Chief Dan George used to say "My heart soars like an eagle." Pat's heart seems to be in decent shape as well, but I think he's getting a bit fidgety in the hospital. I sense he is already starting to heal the pain and the downright scariness with humour. I'm not much of a drinker, but I'm going to hoist one (or three) for the man tonight.

I spoke with 'Spaw this morning, and found him to be knee deep in kitty litter and chomping at the catnip to get back in the fray. Sez he needs some decent furniture to tear up, instead of these damn scratching posts they give ya in the fixin' joint. Anyway, the doc sez that his neuter scar will heal OK, and that, honest, his manhood won't be affected.

Seriously, he sounded very good. And he has been profoundly impacted by the love and goodness of you all. You should be very proud of the fact that you have honestly played a large role in helping him heal. And I reminded him that he is surrounded by some amazing women and friends. Guess what? He didn't need reminding, he knew exactly how special they were. And he sends his best to all of you. He is anxious to get home and get back in touch.

Please don't let off the prayer and healing thoughts, though. He ain't outa there yet.

I am surprised about the poor quality of your hospitals!
They keep patients lying on the floor instead of beds?!
Last time I checked a German hospital they had beds in every room they keep patients, and even allowed the patients to lie in the beds...

Havin' had a day off down to the condrum factory, me and Clete thought maybe we'd go see catspaw uppin' that big city hospital place. We found the place, but it covers more ground than three of the damn towns we grew up in. We keppon' askin' folks about where to go and when one of 'em told us that a public shower would be a start...well Cletus is a man who ain't gotta' be told twice and he knew he didn't need no shower on account of one last week. They got initials for everthing that place. He turned out to be in the "innards care unit" which was confusin' since me and Clete thought thats what all them places did...you know take care of your innards. Well anyway, he was there and didn't seem overglad to see us, partly 'cause the security and some folks from somethin' called central sterile. We got real worried about them "sterile" folks but catspaw talked to 'em and all they done was take us out for a scrubbin! They even give us some clothes to wear called scrubs that they said we could keep...and they washed our stuff up too!!! Catspaw said he didn't need the two of us makin' no reports, but when we talked about Mudcat he gets all teared up so you'll have to wait a bit. He did say that Sandy Paton hit it right. Says he's crying over a hundred people he never met and somethin' about strangers and friends, it was too confusing for Clete and me anyhow.

P.S.S. Pat got moved to the floor today(room 218-1). He wrote this yesterday and when I came home to post it the computer would not let me on the net. All things considered you would not think this was a major disaster, but I was on the phone just going to pieces. I have really enjoyed coming home at night joining in on Mudcat. I'm glad you want me to stay part of your community, I only hope Pat will share the computer with me. Catspaw is going to relay messages through me until he is back at the keyboard himself. So the cat is back...sorta!

We are still on the road, the folks from the Neil Young Institute must be looking for me by now...so I can't give you the exact location. Cletus, the Regs and I finally convinced Paw to let somebody else drive! We are now making great progress, ought to be able to go an' rescue Catspaw from the clutches of them doctor fellas real soon. We enjoyed the ride through the Florida mountains. Wait a minute, Florida ain't got no mountains!! Where in the world is....what's thet sign say?...Grand Teton National Park...Cletus, what in the world you done to us boy, gimme thet steerin' wheel...No, I don't want it back here, leave it where it is an' I'll come to it! Land sakes, just cain't find good help nomore! Now I think on it I hope them folks from the institute do find me, cause I ain't got no idea where we is or where we's headed...how do I get myself into these things?....No Paw, ye ain't gettin out to pet the cute little bear, 'sides thet he ain't thet little!! What with the Catspaw going from bed to chair, and I suspect that has to do with the fulness of the litter box, I feel it is time we started a new thread section. This is, I believe, one of the fastest building threads I have seen since my starting here on the Mudcat.

Thanks both to Maw-in Law, (aka Clarence?, Can't wait to hear that story!) and Katspaw for the continuing updates and good news about one of our own residents of this wonderful community. Looking forward to continued good news and the return of Catspaw to our fold. BUT, when he does return, we still want to hear from Katspaw and Clarence, right sports fans?
