Wow, this one could stand alone in the thread name game. I gather that Leadbelly was pardoned because of the Governor's appreciation of his musical genius. Interesting.

Leadbelly-- ALS Woody Guthrie-- Huntingdon's Chorea

they both take a long time, are diseases of the nervous system, and are v unpleasant, but are two very different things. Huntingdon (ton?) is primaririly hereditary, but it doesn't get you till AFTER you've had kids so we can't count on Mother Nature to be selfcorrecting here. Another 25 years and we'll have DNA repair Please, everybody, try to live a long time! (and isn't our Catspaw news wonderful!?)

There is a test for Huntington's now: I believe it can differentiate between whether you have it or are carrying it.

Susan, there are more than a few people I would gladly let out of my jail free if they wouldn't stop singing!

i always thought bart would head into more visual arts. of course, it seems natural for him to have a good go at music. once he can hold a 12 string.

Yes, there is a test for Huntington's disease. All three of Woody's surviving children (Arlo Davy, Nora Lee, and Joady Ben) have been tested and have been found to be free of the disease. Two of Woody's other eight children, Gwendolyn and Susan, have already died from Huntington's. Woody's other three children perished from other causes, Cathy Ann in an apartment fire, Bill Rogers in a traffic accident, and Lorina Lynn also in a traffic accident. There was some suspicion that Bill Rogers Guthrie's death was a suicide, but there was insufficient evidence to confirm that suspicion. Bill died when his car collided with a train soon after he visited his dad in the hospital for the first time and saw Woody's hapless and hopeless condition.

Incidentally, there is a Simpsons episode where the Simpsons are jailed in Florida for running over an alligator with a hovercraft (don't ask)...in the episode's concluding scenes, they perform at the governor's mansion in a take-off on a scene from the Leadbelly bio-pic.
