I am producing a film of our recent visit to Scotland. I would welcome any suggestions from Mudcatters for CDs that might be appropriate for background music. I am leaning toward instrumentals primarily, but would consider music with vocals. We traveled, primarily in central Scotland, the Highlands and the northeast coast.

There may be songs or tunes appropriate to the particular locations you visited. For example, did you visit Glencoe, Killiecrankie or Loch Tay? You could search for the place names in the database.
Otherwise the Music in Trust suggestion looks a good one.

Most films/TV programmes etc. about Scotland, these days, seem to feature Uillean pipes on the sound track - so, you've got to have some of those! They're Celtic you see ...

Oh yes, and you've got to have some woman who sounds as if she's singing down a well - also 'authentically' Celtic - think of the famous 'singing-down-the-well' singers of South Uist ...

Jean Redpath, anything she's done. Also, the harp playing by Alison Kinnaird. That one has sound samples on it.

Stanley Robertson (you can find a few tracks of him singing unaccompanied ballads on itunes, or on a couple of CDs of Fife traditional singing weekend)

Christine Primrose (you can sample her singing at her myspace; various CDs...I especially recommend si tu nam chuimne; there's also a CD of her with Alison Kinnaird)

There's a particular "Musical instrument" that lends itself well to that region. Looks like an octopus wearing a coat and sounds like... hmmmm!

How about saying what the film is of?

There are something like 30,000 documented Scottish tunes and they range from dirges to manic dances, with associations rangýng from bawdy songs to football chants.

Put the thing up on YouTube with no sound and I could suggest something meaningful.

Nick: Nope, I haven't ruled out anybody.

Hugh: Excellent suggestion. We did visit Killiecrankie but did not visit Glencoe.

kat: It's only a "home" movie and I don't plan to charge admission to my kids who view it. Otherwise, I would request permission from the artists or use music from Public Domain. Good comment though.

Guest Jack: It's mostly landscape and shots taken in towns and villages.

A friend of mine has written an instrumental called "Tweedbank Aria", a wonderful piece of music, I don't know if it's ever been used in anything.

If you are indeed open to vocals, you might consider one of Dougie Maclean's tributes to the land, such as his "Solid Ground." The lyrics are here, although they don't have the same effect without Dougie's peaceful voice singing them, backed by his careful musical accompaniment and exquisite arrangement. A sample is available here, as is a download of the whole song.

So many places in Scotland have tunes named after them you could probably do any itinerary just with those - e.g. round Loch Lomond with "Roy's Wife of Aldivalloch", "Loch Lomond" and one of the parodies of it like that one about getting a hangover and drinking it all, "The Top of Ben Lomond", "The Maids of Arrochar", "Loch Sloy" etc.

Or (if it was a short film) don't use music at all but instead try to find a recording of Edwin Morgan reading that poem that's mostly silly-sounding placenames used as if they were real Scots words - it ends

Well, I'm not so sure what an Irish-American folksinger would know
about this, but my thought is that you probably don't want the music to over-power the film. If that's the case, have you considered
Phil Coulter? When I'm in a pensive, thoughtful or even melancholy
frame of mind he comes across pretty well for me. Just a thought.
