Subject: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 From: nickp Date: 03 Jan 08 - 04:21 AM Well once again here comes the Gainsborough (Lincolnshire) old time music and dance festival. This year it's a week earlier being the 8th to 10th February at Castle Hills School, The Avenue, Gainsborough. Guests this year are Piney Woods, a band featuring Kate Lissauer, Dave and Tim Bing and Jim Martin. They will be admirably supported by fellow Americans Adam Hurt and Beth Hartness. Holding up the UK honours will be the Down Trodden String Band and the Kitty Hawks. Dancers will have the pleasure of Kerry Fletcher's tuition and Kerry will be supported by fiddler Tim Brooks. And if all goes according to plan we expect to have Mudcat's very own Fortunato and Suzette with with parts of their Shiver Show. All that and more (as we always say!).... almost continuous sessioning, a bar, hot food, indoor (and outdoor - brrr!) camping (and no, you can't pitch a tent in the gymnasium, just make up a pallet on the floor as the song goes. DOwnload a flyer from our website Friends of American Old Time Music and Dance Tickets are available on the door for those late deciders... |

Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 From: BanjoRay Date: 04 Jan 08 - 05:49 PM If you're a five string banjo player, you'll really need to get to this festival. Two of the world's best clawhammer players will be there on stage and in workshops. Tim Bing learned his playing as a young man at the cabins of the legendary Hammons family of Pocahontas County, West Virginia, and Dwight Diller recommends him as being the best player of Hammons banjo music. He's not done much recording, but he's none the worse for that. I jammed with him at Glenville WV in 2006, and he knocked my socks off. Adam Hurt is still in his early twenties, and started learning Old Time banjo in his home state of Minnesota as a very young schoolboy. Over the last ten years he has shone in the competitions held at US Old Time festivals, and earned a lot of respect from the Old Time world - the names of the people who wanted to be on his latest CD say it all. The following links will get you pictures and sounds of these guys. Adam Hurt Tim Bing Find "Red Rockin' Chair" I can't wait. Ray |

Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 From: oombanjo Date: 06 Jan 08 - 05:02 AM Hi Deirdre it,s a possibility I have put to the boss.I hope we will see you at Gainsborough, and with a bit of luck I may have my new Romero banjo by then, 36 days and counting down. |
Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 From: GUEST,arnie Date: 06 Jan 08 - 11:24 AM You lucky folks. Adam is one of the finest, cleanest, and most tasteful clawhammer banjo players I have ever seen or heard!!!! Don't miss him! He's a killer fiddler as well and super nice guy. With all the other great talent - you are bound to have a super festival. Arnie Naiman |
Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 From: BanjoRay Date: 07 Jan 08 - 11:30 AM If you're an Old Time (or any other sort of) fiddler, then Adam Hurt, Kate Lissauer and Dave Bing, Tim Bing's brother will really get to you. Dave's the best of the old style West Virginia fiddlers, while Kate's superb sound conveys all that's best about Old Time music. Adam's progress in the last 10 years is astounding. Cheers Ray |

Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 Gainsborough From: Fortunato Date: 11 Jan 08 - 12:22 PM Dear Nick, how are you by now, fine I hope. I reckon it's somewhat different over there in the UK, but up home in Honeyville VA the alien abductions of cattle and other livestock have died down considerably now that the aliens have discovered moonshine. We understand from the regulars down at the Rebel Yell Diner that the demand has exceeded the supply and has pushed the price of 'shine up, as well as encouraged the reactivation of some stills up in Doval Holler that had been shut down these many years. So, ahem, if you want to keep your jackasses in pasture away from your festival and avoid the necessity of hiring a veterinary doctor to be on site, make more moonshine and sell it to your aliens. yours, Chance |
Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 Gainsborough From: nickp Date: 11 Jan 08 - 04:16 PM Dang!!! I only have part of a bottle of Georgia Moon left ... but then that isn't like the real moonshine I've had when been a-wandering abroad! Not quite got the required 30 days left in which to brew the 'real' stuff. And I'm not trying to get the attention of those revenuers! Just have to make do with the legal brews then! Nick |
Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 Gainsborough From: oombanjo Date: 14 Jan 08 - 02:07 PM Hope you're all greasing up your strings 24 days to go. |
Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 Gainsborough From: BanjoRay Date: 14 Jan 08 - 02:55 PM I'm trying to get the grease off mine, John! Off to see Jez Lowe tonight - I wonder if he plays any Old Time? Cheers Ray |
Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 Gainsborough From: oombanjo Date: 14 Jan 08 - 03:23 PM Hi Ray. Does the Greasy string come from stopping the gut drying out? |
Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 Gainsborough From: Fortunato Date: 14 Jan 08 - 06:44 PM oombanjo I reckon you know that Tommy Jarrell sang the words below to The Greasy String, and it seems to suggest a slippery string that required the fiddler to 'mash down harder'. "Run little feet, stop and sing, Mash down harder on the greasy string Jay bird whistles and the cat bird sings Mash down harder on the greasy string. My old lady is mad at me 'Cause I won't drink ginger tea; She is good, she is bad, She gives me the devil when she gets mad." regards, chance |
Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 Gainsborough From: nickp Date: 15 Jan 08 - 07:45 AM You shouldn't use hog grease.... |
Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 Gainsborough From: BanjoRay Date: 15 Jan 08 - 10:06 AM Chance, did you ever get to meet Uncle Tommy? When I tracked him down in Mount Airy he'd unfortunately been dead for 15 years. I'd love to have had a few tunes with him before he passed on. Cheers Ray |
Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 Gainsborough From: Fortunato Date: 15 Jan 08 - 01:13 PM Ray, Nope, I just have a couple of the 'Legacy' cds, and some loose fraternization with fiddlers (ahem) like my old pal Craig Johnson, and I've been to Mt. Airy enough to catch the general atmosphere. I listen to Tommy Jarrell on the I81 going south to Asheville and Galax and Fiddlers Grove, and I remembered his lyric about the "Greasy String". I also listen to Rafe Stefani's Glory on the Big String which I bought from him at Mt. Airy, and Alan Jabbour and Ken Perlman's Southern Summits. Festival preparation songs for the drive, you see. Are you going to be in Gainsborough? regards, chance |
Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 Gainsborough From: BanjoRay Date: 15 Jan 08 - 07:01 PM Yes, Chance, I'll definitely be in Gainsborough. I'll be one of the 50 guys with a banjo, a beard and a baseball cap (except mine has a Barr's Fiddle Shop logo). I should get to meet you at some stage. I think you're going to love it... Cheers Ray Banks |
Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 Gainsborough From: nickp Date: 16 Jan 08 - 06:13 AM ... and I'll be one of those with a beard and NO banjo (it'll be a mandolin if I can escape from organising for long enough). No idea whether I'll have a cap on..... Nick |
Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 Gainsborough From: Fortunato Date: 16 Jan 08 - 09:42 AM Well, Ray you should be easy to pick out then. Nick, I'll be wearing the Black Fedora and holding the guitar, but the lovely and yet talented Susette will be wearing a lady's chapeau and holding the banjo (or the autoharp). I heard that dress was optional, so I'll be wearing suit instead... Chance |
Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 Gainsborough From: oombanjo Date: 16 Jan 08 - 02:16 PM So Nick It's you is it, the one with the beard and short arms. And it's 24 to go. "Question. Can anyone suggest a cap for nick". I thought about one from Holland! |
Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 Gainsborough From: GUEST Date: 16 Jan 08 - 03:51 PM Short.... my arms.... I'll have you know they reach from finger to finger!!! I'll refrain from rising to the other comment!! |

Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 Gainsborough From: BanjoRay Date: 18 Jan 08 - 09:22 AM I'm still trying to work out how to darn a banjo, after being told to do so for years. Ray |
Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 Gainsborough From: nickp Date: 18 Jan 08 - 09:47 AM Hi Ray First you put some holes in the skin.... a craft knife usually suffices.... Nick |
Subject: RE: UK Old Time Music festival - Feb 8-10 Gainsborough From: Fortunato Date: 18 Jan 08 - 12:05 PM Careful with that knife, Nick, one slip and you've a gelded banjo. Of course, there are those who'd welcome a reduction in banjo breeding and propigation. Banjo's breeding, there's a visual for you. Bruce Hutton always said he played a little banjo, now perhaps I know where he got them. cheers chance |
