What an amazing night, we enjoyed an evening of song and music. We listened to some real quality live music. Can't believe the organiser gets those well known musicians to come to an evening in the pub. If all the sessions are like that for the main festival, we will definitely be there.

I went to the Mayor's do and the King's Lock pub and enjoyed both very much. The British Legion could have had more seats filled but there were lots of people there.

Ann English, Dom Collins and Acoustak and the comedian provided a quality and varied entertainment at the Legion.

The Kings Lock was full to the brim and the Weavils, Dave Dove,Trimrigdoxy, Dr Bob and the Wildboys, our gang from Sandbach and many others who I had not met before made it a great night. I even heard Busy Lizzy sing - what a great (but quiet) voice. Roll on next month

Just wanted to say thanks for a brilliant evening at the Kings Lock last night. So often when you travel a distance to a session you can be a bit dissappointed but not last night. Well attended, relaxed, friendly and excellent music.

That's what you might call excellent news.

I will now be able to say that I once performed in the same venue as June Tabor.

I just won't mention that our appearances were separated by nearly fifty years.

In 1960 I was, briefly, a member of the choir of St Michael & All Angels in Middlewich.

I got the sack, for reasons which will be obvious to those who've heard me sing.

I can't see the same thing happenening to June in June.

I am getting into the swing of MUDCAT now! I pop in for a look and see what a trail I have started! I am pleased to say that this week we will officially release the line up for 2008 festival and I'll do a separate posting for that. And yes Janet and Sandbach Folkie, the Church is St Michaels Church in Middlewich, that lovely Church you see as you approach the town from any direction. June loves to play in Churches and when I decided to book her for this year, we had had just been asked by the Church Committee if we could include them for some concerts. So it is a first and we welcome June Tabor to Middlewich complete with Grand Piano which is to be hired in for the weekend! Jonathan Kelly (see some previous postings, is alive and well and will perform in Middlewich this summer) will make use of the Piano in the same venue on Saturday night... I hope that has wet your whistles a little!
Look out for my posting of the line up in the next few days.

Oh and as for my interest in organser, it is my favourite material, I have a beautiful piece that I lay out on the table when I do my Virgin Vie at home parties. If anyone is interested in having a party in their own home do let me know.

And finally, I agree that the Macmillan charity is very important and on behalf of MFAB I will be offering a generous raffle prize at the Lord Mayors event. MFAB is happy to support fund raising events in the town.

I note from the June Tabor official website that she is appearing at the Boat Festival this year on 13 June in the Church. Does anyone know the rest of the line-up yet please? I am looking forward to getting my trailer tent out for the Festival season and Middlewich will definitely be on my calendar this year as I am a big fan of hers. I could not go to the Celtic Connections Festival this week even though she was performing there on Wednesday. How wonderful that she will be performing so close to home.

The Roberts & Webb charity is Roberts & Webb, in that circumstances dictate that we have to do this stuff for a living now.

(voices off shouting 'you'll starve!')

But I have to say that the Mayor's Charity (i.e. the Macmillan Cancer Unit at Leighton) is extremely worthwhile.

We've all been fundraising for the cause since last March when Live & Local put on a weekend at the Boar's Head with artists including Pete Morton and...Roberts & Webb.

And more recently Ian Norbury and I, who run the Boar's Head Quiz on Sundays, got together with Mike Parsons (ex Salt Town Poet and current Mayor Of Congleton) to put on a series of quizzes in Middlewich, Congleton, Sandbach and Alsager in aid of Macmillan.

And very successful they've been.

So you'll see why I'm a bit ambivalent about promoting our R&W thing at the BH over the Macmillan Concert. If I wasn't at the BH I'd be there myself, obviously.

The only thing I will say is that we had the date before anyone else.

I believe too, bringing all the various Middlewich strands together, that Middlewich Folk & Boat Festival are supplying some of the artists for the concert at the RBL.

So, all in all, it's a nice story of everyone working together for a good cause.

There are 1,550 entries under organser in Google. It is obviously an international word! British Legion on the other hand has been translated by Dave into "Civic Hall". Which Civic Hall is it please? Or is it the same place as the British Legion?

What is the Roberts and Web charity please? I understand the Mayor's Charity is Macmillan Cancer Support at Leighton Hospital - a cause which has deservedly had a lot of support from the great people of Middlewich from what I have just read in previous threads. Us Sandbach people are glad to support our Mayor as we also are allowed to go to Leighton Hospital.

It's possible that Organser is a type of material used for making frocks.

There may be some kind of sexual meaning too, but in Middlewich we don't do things like that.

And now the dust has settled on all that stuff and all's right with the world, I can report that the Boar's Head's Saturday night sessions, which were being tried out 'experimentally' in a room (restaurant actually)away from the main lounge will be returning to the lounge area. There will still be the option to retreat to the restaurant if the lounge gets too noisy (though what, exactly, could be noisier than some of the BH sessions I've witnessed I don't know)or if there's a disco or similar in the upstairs room - something which always impinges on the lounge more than anywhere else.

Goodness, I forgot I'd started this thread, but I think it has got out of hand.

Can I just say that Dave Thompson has helped the festival in many ways since he resigned as festival director both as part of his job as event organiser for the town and as a source of general advice.

As for help - we need help from people who are willing to give time to meetings and to the weekend itself. It was a request help and it has worked and I'd like to thank those mudcatters who have contacted me without a fuss over the last week or two and offered MFAB just that.

If that's the case it has, as they say, nowt to do wi' me.

I was merely trying to make the point that, although Dave Thompson is no longer Festival Director, you would have thought that MFAB would welcome his input into the Festival with open arms.

But from what I can gather they don't seem to.

This was what I really meant by the word 'sidelined' and the 'chucking the baby out with the bathwater' gag, which has obviously struck a raw nerve with 'Associate' Of MFAB.

After all, Dave is Middlewich Town Council's Events Manager and not only oversees all manner of musical events, but dreams most of them up.

It just seems odd that, of all the major music events in Middlewich, only one doesn't seem to need all the help he can offer.

And that event is one that he not only helped start, but also steered through its rocky early years and into a highly successful maturity.

If help is needed, why not involve Dave Thompson more?

That's all I was saying.

Perhaps it is, after all, merely the dreaded 'committee politics' which are putting the kybosh on things.

I don't know, and I really, really, really don't want to know.

However, I've seen too many long wrangles on Mudcat to want to get involved in another one, so I'll leave it there..

Can I just remind everyone that Roberts & Webb are appearing at the Boar's Head on Saturday 2nd February at 8.30pm. Admission Free.

And in the circumstances I'm sure that no reasonable person will mind me pointing out that this is NOT an MFAB event.

Whilst it is appreciated Mr Roberts is being very positive in his comments about MFAB there is one fact that needs correcting. Dave Thompson resigned for both personal reasons and as he was persuing a change of career, and that is on the record. The suggestion that he was 'thrown out with the bathwater' is not correct. Ms Rosenfield was asked by the committee to take over as Festival Director after Mr Thompsons resignation and she agreed to take on the huge and time consuming job. Sadly a few of the Mr Thompson followers who obviously believed in the 'bathwater' statement seriously undermined Ms Rosenfields ability to undertake the task. In the face of some well documented adversity Ms Rosenfield has done a stirling job as would any good festival director. As a close associate of the festival, I do hope that Ms Rosenfield gets the help she deserves and I for one would like to see the festival continue. I look forward to hearing the anouncement of this year's line up.

In another thread, the current festival director, Liz, has been appealing for more volunteers, especially for people to help in obtaining funding.

Ironically one of the problems Middlewich has always had is a lack of funding and it has always been a victim of its own success.

Local authorities, in particular, have regularly resisted appeals for more money because, to all outward appearances, MFAB seemed to be so successful and popular.

The hours of hard work by dedicated unpaid volunteers behind that success was never taken into account.

This, of course, will be a familiar story to organisers of festival and other events everywhere.

My first time 2007,and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I understood that there had been a few commitee changes,and that being so it is inevitable that comparisons will be made, However it is a learning curve and no doubt the commitee will be aware of any problems or difficulties with a view to sorting them out.It should be remembered that ' Line ups' don't always suit everyone and sometimes you can see a fault which is not apparent or important to others.

Could be. It's difficult for me to comment, too.

As a former committee member (and, indeed, one of the founders of MFAB) any criticism of the current set-up I make is always open to (very mistaken, I assure you ) accusations of 'sour grapes'.

I left the MFAB committee for personal reasons and hoped it would continue to thrive and prosper.

Which it has until recently.

It may well be that the festival, in common with many other similar events, has fallen victim to circumstances beyond its control but, sadly, I think that the current committee did a litle bit of 'throwing out the baby with the bathwater' in sidelining Dave Thompson, the original festival director.

I feel sure he had a lot more to contribute to MFAB but, from what I gather, no longer has much input to MFAB.

Which is a shame.

But these things will always be subjective.

If Mr Happy thinks that MFAB is still brilliant, well that's just fine.

But a lot of people I have spoken to think that it's now past its best and needs a bit of a boost to bring it back to its former glory.

Well, I don't camp so I can't comment on that but, and maybe it's a personal thing, the line-ups haven't really appealed and the stuff in the pubs around the town seemed to be a bit chaotic. Nobody seemed to know what was supposed to be on and there weren't many organisers around. I don't want to overstate it though. I just felt it wasn't as well run as in previous years. With a festival as good as Middlewich has always been though perhaps it is just failing to live up to its own high standards.

My apologies - of course it's Steamhead (Steam Head?) not Head of Steam. Steamhead used to make the session for me.

There used to be a Head of Steam pub just by London Euston but it's not there any more. It was a really useful place to await your, inevitably delayed, train departure.

It certainly sounds like there is a lot going on in Middlewich and I'm glad to read that the "Boar's" is as popular as ever.

I read though in another threat that the Folk and Boat Festival is on its last legs. This is very dissapointing. I used to reckon it amongst the best run festivals although I have to say, in the last couple of years, its not been as good. We were actually thinking of going to the Oysterband's festival on that weekend this year as we've always fancied it (nothing to do with it being in Leicester!) and were a bit dissapointed in Middlewich last year.

...and while I remember, we'll be doing a very similar quiz at the Military Arms in Sandbach on Tuesday 22nd January.

This is the third round of the Mayor Of Congleton's Charity Quiz and the aim is to raise funds for the new Macmillan Cancer Unit at Leighton Hospital, Crewe(the fourth and final round will be in Alsager at a later date).

MacMillan is the Mayor's official charity for this year.

I have been to both the Boars Head and the Kings Lock "sessions" a couple of times. These were not actually sessions but singarounds as I remember it. Rumour has it that both have good nights and less good nights, depending on who turns up. I hear that last Sunday at the Kings was brilliant.

I have never to my knowledge seen Dave Roberts perform at either event but will try and come on 2 Feb as it is free. The quiz sounds good too so I might attend sometime if my visa covers it.

It's a been a while since I've been to Middlewich but the Saturday night sessions in the Boar's Head were always good (especially the jugs of Stockport's finest that were passed around!). There was always a good session a the Boar's Head during the boat festival and we used to base ourselves there for the whole weekend!

I must make the effort to get over to Middlewich soon but I'm not sure about a session on a Sunday night - if there's free beer though I might persuade Mrs Lester to drive! Are Head of Steam still doing their thing and do they go to the Sunday session?

Well, as the thread title is 'Music In Middlewich', I think it's only fair to mention also the Boar's Head in Kinderton Street which hosts monthly Saturday sessions, as well as a monthly Open Mike Night - Middlewich Open Mike (MOM)with, among others, regulars Ian Norbury, Andy Roscoe and Brian Ayling - which has been going on in various forms since 1995. MOM is on on the third Wednesday of every month and is presented by Live & Local, an initiative by Folk & Boat Festival founder Dave Thompson.
In fact the Boar's Head and Live & Local between them present music EVERY Saturday evening.
Saturday 2nd February will be particularly memorable as it features Roberts & Webb (Declaring an interest, I must point out that I'm one half of this unusual duo. You may be able to divine which half from my name)
Incidentally, Roberts & Webb are continuing with their residency at the Blue Bell, Smallwood, on the last Monday of every month.
And oh yes,the Boar's Head presents the most entertaining pub quiz you'll ever experience. Not very folk-orientated, but nonetheless excellent and wildly popular.
All the events mentioned here are absolutely free.
Thread-drifting a bit, can I send good wishes to Les Barker who I worked with many times at the Boar's Head along with the Salt Town Poets? We were all immensely proud of 'Breakfast With Barker'. Get Well Soon, Les!

Mudcat local usage - Internet Link is usually blue, and you click on it - hence BL(UE CL)ICKY.
What I was saying is that the hidden text (the address of the web link) had been typed with a stray comma which shouldn't be there, and so doesn't link to the web site, but brings up an error message.
If you are onm Mudcat, there is an automatic "Link Maker" often known as the Blickifier which makes the process a bit more reliable. You copy the link from the address bar of the web page, then paste it into the Blickifier. Once it has made your link, you can test to see it works. You then copy the HTML code produced and paste it back into a Mudcat message.

Well to answer both, what on earth is a stray blicki!! I am new to this mudcat language, I am sure you will enlighten me! I do my own website and it takes me hours, I lose more than I can save! if you have a look around it will tell you a bit more about the Kings Lock, but for tonight, it is an informal session with - well me! and whoever turns up! We do have Dr Bob and the Wildboys tonight with guest singer! I usually send out an email a week or so before so join my mailing list and I can tell you when I have organised a guest or two, guest night, singers night, session, well to be honest it depends who is there. If someone has a burning desire to stand up and perform their new song, brilliant, if someone just likes to sit in the background and strum along, thats great too! In the coming months guests will appear, have a look at the guests we have had, they're all up for coming again, they do a bit, join in - it really is that flexible! Hope you see you!!

If you fancy joining us for an 'informal' session at the Kings Lock Public House this Sunday night in Middlewich. We start about 8ish. This really is an acoustic session open to beginners and experienced musicians, singers, songwriters and listeners! Performances not required, just joining in, having a go, a few beers and some likeminded friends! Bring those guitars that have been sitting in the wardrobe gathering dust, those of you learning new instruments and those of us who like to 'have a sing' in a relaxed and informal setting absolutely welcome. This session in on the first Sunday of the Month every month.
Recently established as The Kings Lock Folk Club, guests welcome.
