I have just discovered the utter joy of MySpace and, strike me, one of the first friends I bump into is The Duncan MacFarlanes! Tunes and all, Botany Bay as live and type.

I guess all the Folk world is in MySpace?

I'm on myspace but in three different guises!
Myspace is more of a serious outlet and gives you a chance to be a little creative, I think facebook is just pure daftness but as long as you can get past all of the people who want to turn you into a zombie/vampire/pirate...... etc, you might be ok!

well he does warn you that it takes him forever to answer an
e-mail.....and looking at his gig list one can understand why..so I think him not having a myspace space has much to do with more to do with being kept busy playing.

Hi Kids!: My name is, well, Bob. Just like you see above. Saying Good Day to all from Montreal, Canada. My Folk roots go back to Providence, Rhode Island, U.S.A. in the 60's, and The Yellow Door Coffeehouse in Montreal. I saw this link, so I've sent a Friend Req. to as many on this thread as I could find. While what you'll hear on my myspace profile isn't exactly what you'd call Folk, there's a soft spot in my heart for the art form...Wish everybody well, and I hope this connection will help get your music heard by the world, which, as you begin to explore myspace...Is a BIG place...Cheers...bob

I suppose I ought to say "Me too" as well! In schizophrenic guises, firstly as myself at
this place and then at this other place with Keith Kendrick and Ralphie (of this parish) and details of the show about Lucy Broadwood that we're getting together for later on this year.

As you say Brian, nice to see and hear what others on here look and sound like ... so bye bye visual and audio anonymity! (Although I suppose there would be no point in being on MySpace if that was what you were after *LOL* )

HipflaskAndy (a nom de plume seemed the order of the day when I signed on here originally)
has a 'band' myspace at...
The Duncan McFarlane Band

...which has giglists (solo & band), photos, free downloads and links to a myriad of fine folk artistes

...and also has a 'solo' myspace at...
Duncan McFarlane
...which, whilst it serves merely as a point of re-direction to the 'other' site
(to aid those 'searching')
- is also useful to park six more tracks on! (solo, not band).

Hey, Mole Catcher, Mr. K is busy it's true, and as he's been around before the age of Myspace he doesn't feel the need for one I suppose, but Benji has one and I dare say his other kids do too if we look; Face Book (hawk spit) as well I think.

My question is...Are we all part of a big Myspace family?
Aren't we performers looking for places to strut our stuff?
Can we not help each other find places to do just that?
What are we actually here for?
We keep advertising on each other's pages but does it get us anywhere?

According to the comments on my page, for instance, I'm not half bad but when I ask festival Myspace members to consider me, I get no response at all apart from an automated message which shows they didn't actually look at my page but just clicked "approve" when asked to be a friend. The folk clubs have been helpful tho, cos I think they are run by like minded, thinking people.

So my question is... Does Myspace work for the performer? Could we have a Myspace UK gathering like www.mudcat.org when we meet up at fests? I'm told that there is a Myspace concert at Fylde Fest.

Sal

Weeeell, I look at them all I don't approve them all but I am not so good with it so haven't really got the hang of sending messages. I totally agree with sal on the gig business but I do understand that bums on seats what's counts and someone without a track record is not guaranteed to do that so there is no alternative other than to build it unless your surname is Copper or Waterson and then you do get a leg up but then pedigree will out and they do not disappoint, haven't heard of a son of milk cart horse running in the Derby but some pop star had a £3000 horse run in the guineas, might even have won it. The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary but it would be nice to be invited to some different places, go on, go on, go on, take a risk, go on, go on.

Ah Paulo of the pig skin and strings, you are of course right about KFC (it's finger pickin good) really lookin forward to it but you already knew us ( not in the biblical sense, for all the people who might wonder!) maybe myspace might open it up, having said that our cd took just over three hours to record and about eight hours to clean up and is, to all intents and purposes, a live recording in a studio warts and all so what you hear is what you get, more or less. Some people take weeks to edit and chew them about, I think there are some excellent pieces of work about but ours was only intended as a snapshot of what we were doing at the time. So how reliable can the recordings on myspace be as an indicator of a live performance, I actually think we come over better live but then it is because I enjoy it more. See ya soon
cheers

In all seriousness, Sal does make some points. MySpace (and to some extent Mudcat) has been an excellent way of;

a/ Making contact with people to arrange Gigs for Wendy (Arrowsmith-it helps that the product is good. Bias, me?)

and b/ Acts making contact with me for bookings at KFFC. I have booked some act (e.g. The Hut People) on the strength of what I've heard on MySpace.

In terms of getting gigs....most (but not all...you know who you are!) folk club organisers are pretty good at responding (even if to say no!). The same is true of multi act "acoustic night" organisers...and pubs who promote their own folk music gigs.

In my (admittedly limited) experience festival organisers are far, far worse at responding (even to say no!) however they are contacted...it's not unique to MySpace.

I agreee Paul.

Of the seven festivals I contacted in the late Autumn. Only three responded. One definative no. The other an Ok, but the dates that i'll be over didn't suit. The third. Was a wait and see. I'm still waiting. (I know it's early days yet) Although I see that their list is alomost complete.
Of the other six festivals I contacted in December. I've not heard anything. I think December is too late.

Of the return envelopes I sent with the Cd etc. None have been returned. I wasn't really expecting any respons either. 'cos I know that you have to be in the right place at the right time to get anything.

Early days yet. Only been at it 40 years.

Hi Kids: From my viewpoint, myspace teaches us, or rather inspires us, to break free of limitations. With 7,000,000 bands and counting, 218,310,249 people in the network and counting, there is little point in waiting for something to happen. It's D.I.Y. "do it yourself"...
What if , for example, there were a university in Texas, willing to have authentic music from the U.K. as part of the curriculum? And say, 4 or 5 acts could present a "Mini Folk Festival?"
Would you go? Would you be willing to do the organizational work necessary to contact that university, or group of high schools in Texas and tell them you will do the most authentic U.K. music show they will ever see? Just by being yourselves. Do you have what it takes to INITIATE that action? Are you a DOER?
I see little point in clamouring for gigs in the same locale and doing what is comfortable and familiar. The whole POINT of myspace is to broaden your horizons. And it is Y.O.U. that must do the WORK to put it together, as staring at a computer screen waiting for something to happen won't do it.
What if there is a film being shot, by an unknown, highly creative filmmaker that could really use the songs you sing? How do you find each other? The answer lies in being pro-active, by having faith that what you do is worthwhile, and by REACHING OUT. And I don't mean a cursory mouseclick to approve a friend req. from someone you don't even know, Or, whose genre of music you might not even LIKE.
Your success as artists is limited only by your imagination. Not only in the music you perform, but in new creative ways to get it to new audiences. And isn't that just about the same as the folksingers of old did with what they had? What would they have done, having the luxury of the internet? They would not have sat on their hands and wait for somebody to gimme.
The potential of myspace is unlimited, and yet it is but one tool. But WHAT a tool!
The same process is in effect when you couldn't find employment. What to do? Start your own business! And they don't call it show BUSINESS for nothing...
This is why, after sending in excess of 30,000 emails, having 19,711 profile views, 15,743 plays, and 8931 friends(God Bless 'em, each and every one. Thanks) I am currently working on producing my own film. You will see my album, "The Ghost of Elvis"(Happy Birthday Elvis, Jan. 8) on Amazon.com, iTunes, Rhapsody, eMusic, Sony Connect, Napster, GroupieTunes and Virgin Digital. With a new one in the works...
Friends, the music industry is changing right under your feet. The time is now. What will you do? Be your own festival. Be your own folk club. Be your own best friend and promote yourselves in new, creative ways..
Bless...
bob

                   ATTN: Faculty of Music
                   email: kreese@unt.ed
                   phone: (940) 565-3993

Dear Ms Reese: We are a group of Folk musicians based primarily in the U.K. and are members of a thread-generating forum called The Mudcat Cafe. Our backgrounds are as diverse as our music. We are making this exploratory contact with you to see if there is interest at The University of North Texas to have members of our group come to the U.S. to play in a festival-like atmosphere for the students. This will provide a once in a lifetime experience of authentic traditional music from the U.K. The students will be able to meet & greet the musicians as well as sing along. This will provide a wonderful opportunity for your music faculty to explore this historically rich music genre. Many of us have just begun to create profiles on myspace, and with your permission, we can email you some profiles for your consideration. If you are willing to begin a dialogue with our organization, we would be pleased to discuss funding and logistics. Thank You for taking the time to read this and we look forward to your response.

Best Wishes, The Mudcat Organizing Committee...

http://www.unt.edu/

Well Mudcatters, here we are at the crossroads, the place where fortune might favour the bold. Or you could choose the more comfortable path of familiarity, and return to the Pubs and Folk Clubs. And of course, continue focusing on what can't be done. For I guarantee you that if you do so, "that it can't be done" will be the outcome. Will you get turned down? Maybe. Or perhaps the lengendary British spirit of Richard the Lionhearted, Sir Lancelot, "Her Majesty's Secret Service", The Royal Navy, and all that is good that comes from Buckingham Palace will rise up within you, and you'll "give it a go..."

This is about as much as I can do as I must continue with my projects. The rest is up for discussion between yourselves. It might take many tries. But. It is DO-able...

Good Luck...

bob

Written in the spirit of love and respect, and hope that the world will get to hear your music...And I know it's none of my business, and I apologize for that...

Hey bob, that was a great pep talk a few posts ago. You're certainly correct about the potential. It's unlimited. It also requires a great deal of work and know how. To even just begin to explore this single site (MySpace) it can easily take an enormous amount of time and energy out of a person's daily schedule and that's not even considering the many other sites there are out there to explore or how many more that may arise while you're looking around. The web is getting thick with them and each has the same potential to be a great stepping stone to establish yourself and your particular pursuit(s).

I admire your very proactive approach. It takes vision and persistence in every field of endeavor in order to succeed in reaching the personal goals we each set for ourselves.

All the best to you

Thanks for the kind words reggie. It's just that I've checked out a lot of these musicians and it would be a shame not to even try. And yes, it does take a lot of organization, work and tenacity. But did anything that was ever great come easy? If it did, everybody would be doing it. This is why the great ones are on the world stage, and the others are in the audience...

Since a Festival doesn't have a gender, etc, can anyone point me to how I can register as a Club?
I've read through the online Help, but unless I'm totally missing something obvious, I can't find how one does this.

If you want to keep both pages (I have two, one personal, one music) get a free e-mail address on Yahoo, Google or one of the other search engines that allows free sign-up, then use that as your primary e-mail for setting up the new page. That's the simplest thing to do. People who message you from the site will do so within MySpace and won't know your e-mail address unless you allow them to see it.

Yup - I'll agree to some of the above comments - you can't have two MySpace pages using the same email address - so I use my two freebies on hotmail and Yahoo for the purposes (two separate music accounts - one for me, and one set up for the new show ). I originally had a "vanilla" non-music space, and eventually got to transfer the email address across to the second music space (but only after the non-music one had been completely closed down)

John down south: A bit of a guess on my part, but there should be a "rotate" function in the photo app. on your hard drive. Did you scan the photo? Maybe there. If you took the all digital route, go to the source and check the camera. The App in Mac is iPhoto. Test the Jpeg you create, to ensure it's upright, and upload to myspace. I don't think the problem is at myspace's end, but I'm not an expert...
