Thanks, Kat. You are one awesome researcher. How about trying "The Giant Cow Song" thread which I believe is known as "Pass the Other Udder".

Subject: Lyr Add: PURPLE PEOPLE EATER (Sheb Wooley)
From: katlaughing
Date: 23 Feb 01 - 08:09 PM

-the # 24 song of the 1955-1959 rock era
-was # 1 for 6 weeks in 1958
NOTE:< words of the PPE> highly reminiscent of the Chipmunks' "voices"

THE PURPLE PEOPLE EATER
Words and music by Sheb Wooley
As recorded by Sheb Wooley, 1958.

Well, I saw the thing comin' out of the sky.
It had the one long horn, one big eye.
I commenced to shakin' and I said: "Ooh-eee!
It looks like a purple eater to me."

It was a one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater
(One-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater)
A one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater
Sure looks strange to me. (One eye?)

Well he came down to earth and he lit in a tree.
I said: "Mr. Purple People Eater, don't eat me."
I heard him say in a voice so gruff:
"I wouldn't eat you 'cause you're so tough."

It was a one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater
One-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater
One-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater
Sure looks strange to me, (One horn?)

I said: "Mr. Purple People Eater, what's your line?"
He said: "Eatin' purple people and it sure is fine,
But that's not the reason that I came to land.
I wanna get a job in a rock-and-roll band."

Well bless my soul, rock and roll, flyin' purple people eater
Pigeon-toed, undergrowed, flyin' purple people eater
(We wear short shorts) friendly little people eater
What a sight to see!

And then he swung from the tree and he lit on the ground.
And he started to rock, really rockin' around.
It was a crazy ditty with a swingin' tune:
"Sing a bop bap aloopa lappa loom bam boom."

Well bless my soul, rock and roll, flyin' purple people eater
Pigeon-toed, undergrowed, flyin' purple people eater
(I like short shorts) Flyin' little people eater
What a sight to see. (Purple People?)

And then he went on his way, and then what do ya know?
I saw him last night on a TV show.
He was blowing it out, a-really knockin' 'em dead,
Playin' rock-and-roll music through the horn in his head.

[clarinet solo]

(Tequila!)

I remember this song. My Dad used to sing it. thank you for reminding me. "The Purple People Eater" was covered on another thread, I think. If not I may still have the 45rpm. My favorite line:
Mr. Purple People Eater what's your line?
I see your eatin' purple people and it sure is fine" He was here to get a job in a rock 'n roll band.

Curious if anyone has come up with the verses to the novelty song "Close the Doors, They're Coming in the Windows" which I also remember hearing on the radio, or with the verses to "The Flying Purple People Eater." Elusive songs, so it seems, but someone must know them; I have examined the old DT threads on these.

Shambles,

I'm glad I'm not the only one here that's old enough to remember Billy Cotton.

What an amazing man he was. It wasn't really folk music though he used many folk tunes and old tunes. He practically invented Rap "Down in the jungle...". The most important thing though was that he made music 'so much fun'.

Perhaps someone should start a Billy Cotton thread.

Bert

That sounds like a very funny version.

And a good friend of mine pointed out my horrible grammatical error! "their coming..." DOH! And to think I was an English major! My excuse...I was posting at almost midnight my time after a Guinness and a glass of wine (with a late dinner)..........no more needs to be said. LOL

Wow! Billy Cotton used to sing a version of that.

Close the door, they're coming through the window
Close the door, they're coming up the stairs
Close the door, they're hanging from the ceiling
Those "Booma de booma de boom" are everywhere.

Don't remember any more verses though
Something about ...grabbed a cricket bat...said take that, take that...

It was a long time ago about 1948 I think.

Bert.

Chorus:
Shut the door their coming through the window,
Shut the window their coming through the door,
Shut the door their coming through the window,
Oh the room is full and won't hold anymore.

I went in for rabbits and I kept them in a hutch.
I only bought two rabbits, it didn't seem like much.
Next morning when I looked at them how they had multiplied.
A thousand rabbits jumped right out and all the neighbors cried:
(chorus)

Anyone know the other verses??? I can only recall the one.

Thanks a bunch!
