Doors open at 1PM and I think we Bothy persons will be starting our first session at 1.30PM rather than 2PM. You'll all need something to do rather than aimlessly utilising the bar - no? thought not, but we'll give you that extra half hour anyway. Our first featured Guest is Dave Burland (rather than Trio Threlfall - their spots have been swapped round) - onstage at 2.30PM approx. Tickets are selling well and there's a potential for HOUSE FULL signs so best contact Arts Centre now if you're thinking of coming and haven't done anything about it yet.

I've got my ticket. Les, Clive - Looking forward to seeing you there it should be a great day. Only problem will be deciding whether to be in the bar or in the studio/theatre.

Changes to note are that DAVE BURLAND will be on in the first Bothy session & the TRIO THRELFALL will be on at the second one.
On the Friday night at the Ceilidh event to be held at Bothy H.Q. (Park Golf Club). There will be a free song / tune session in the bar for those not wanting to Ceil... & on Sunday lunchtime there will be a song/tune session in the Guest House, Union St.
Cheers

Congratulations to all involved in running this event; it was a good and varied programme. I thought Brass Monkey were in superb form, and I really enjoyed the young Scottish band Breabach. I missed Moishe's Bagel in favour of Trio Threlfall, but I heard from others they were very good. However Jane and Amanda Threlfall were in great voice, backed by the assured hand of Roger Edwards, and I gather their new CD is on its way.

The bar food was very reasonably priced, but the catering staff had seriously underestimated the drinking capacity of the audience and the real ale ran out far too soon!

I think it fair to say that there'll be a repeat 'Day' in 2009. It all ran rather smoothly and splendidly, I'm sure all would agree. Sorry about the beer situation - the Arts Centre Bars Manager, Cheryl, had actually upped their order by a third but I did warn 'em what would happen!!!! Oysterband were on fine form and to their credit included a lot more folk-slanted stuff in their set than they might have done at a rockier gig. Thanx from a Bothy perspective to all of you who supported this initiative - the 'fringe' events were well-attended too. Pip, pip, what larks!

I thought it was a fantastic day. Breabach and Dervish were highlights for me, I thought both were outstanding. I also thought Oysterband were a great choice for finishing the night.

Clive, do you think it would be possible to extend the bar activities next year, maybe have an open session all afternoon for anyone not into what was on in the theatre. I found myself in the bar at one point with my pint and chips thinking it would be nice if something was going on.

I won't say which band I didn't go and see, I think I might get lynched!

Yes it was a successful day, & I particulary enjoyed Brass Monkey, Breabach & the Threlfall's, therebye missing Moishe's Bagel & some of Dave Burland. I personally didn't get excited by the Oyster Band (although very professional) in my view they are more a rock band or if you like, an English Runrig or Levellers, not really my cup of tea.
I agree with Rich about exteding the options for bar activities, but for different reasons. Unlike Rich I felt Dervish were very proffessional, but boring! I got to the bar before the encore & found a group of friends already there having had enough "diddly diddly", (their words, not mine. There again we all like something different don't we?
I met a few people who had made a weekend of it & came down to see Alan Taylor at the Bothy on Sunday. All in all a good weekend.
Cheers
Les

I had broached the idea of on-going all-day bar sessions but to be fair, the Arts Centre wanted 'formal' concert programming at some stages if only to justify to Sefton Council that they had full houses to secure future funding - Dervish for example, was fully subscribed.
I know the Club sessions were fab. but also I'm aware from my own discussions with the Council that "bums-on-concert-seats" is what swings 'our' music for them. We have to play the game and be diplomatic at times. I often think the world of choice, which we of course inhabit, can occasionally produce too much head-scratching? "Oh darling, what SHALL we go to now!" Discuss!
Also bar stay-backs would've seen off the dwindling cask beers long before they gave out completely. That WILL be addressed at any future bash. Trust me!
Noise leakage too, into the Studio was a factor, particularly if all bar-goers were suddenly inspired to sing 'General Taylor though maybe not applicable to Oysterband gig!?
That said, it was a first event of its kind in Southport and all options are on the table, so do continue to feedback to all of us who were involved.

How about bar sessions when there's no concert in the studio? When I was in the main theatre it seemed absolutely packed and I'm sure 20 or 30 singers in the bar wouldn't have been missed.   No, dear, MISSED.

You can please some of the people all of ............etc.etc. I reiterate that if points are being flagged up as obviously they are being/have been, then I'm sure they'll be taken into consideration. You'll perhaps have been at the next day's apres-event session? Dozens? Hundreds? fighting to attend? Hm,mm.
