I spoke to my sister in the UK on Sunday (as I do every week -- what the hell - you only live once....) -- she was indicating a really scarey uptick in prices starting with petrol at 1.03 (pounds -- don't have a sterling sign on my laptop) PER LITRE.......! Ouch and ouch again.....

Charley

We would love too but belts are getting tightened here with the sub prime fiasco in the US starting to bite our asses, everything is going up at three times the rate of inflation (wages in real money) and the pound is weakening against the euro so life is not as rosy as it was last year. Having said all that we would like to come over for the Portsmouth fest. some time, we shall see, I suppose we could sell out and do the beer promo thing for money but that is serious hard work but it would pay the airfare and the accommodation, we'll see.

Pete

Charlie, I would have mugged Peter, but I'm skairt of Joanne! Nope, no 'beautiful antique wooden box' for me.

Jeri-

Was that the one contained in the beautiful antique wooden box?

I believe that all you have to do is rub the box gently, and the buttons will magically play any tune you wish.

Barry led "Schooner Industry (Capt. Boston)" and half of "London Julie," sharing the song with Peter S. Maybe we need more shared songs. What else did Barry sing?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I sang a couple songs, but it was really good to get out of the house for a while and see friends again. The life of a hermit isn't all fun and games, you know!

I came home with a new English friend. He belongs to another and I'll have to give him back, but I'll have fun while I can. I'm still figuring out how to push the right buttons.

Lovely session -- crowded, though.

Actually, the earlier jazz session was pretty crowded with listeners, too. And Larry Garland (whose group had been playing over the lunch time) and a few friends stayed around for the entire shanty session and LOVED it.

It was really great for me to be there after missing the December session. Sort of a double header for me -- I was at the Friday session for the first time since December and then came Saturday -- by mid-session my arm was getting very fatigued.

Let's see, what did I sing besides "Lovely Agnes" (which I sing because I was born between Lake Superior and Lake Michigan and grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan)? "Sailor's Prayer "(Tom Lewis), "Cannery Shed" ...oh, and a recitation.

I probably should post "The Adventures of the Rear Admiral and His Maid". I know I said I may have written it in study hall when I was 15, but I may have been 16 and in the school libraryy supposedly doing research for my History Honors paper. I hated the era we were limited to, so wrote the poem instead. (Well, I eventually wrote the paper on Mussolini's Rationalizations for the Pact of Steel.)

Stallion-

Al and Barbara are in fine spirits and are almost becoming regulars at the Press Room sessions. What a commute! They do stop at another session in Western Massachussetts prior to the Press Room and the MIT session in Cambridge the Sunday after before heading home to Long Island. They say that more of the New York South Street Seaport gang may be coming up with them again next month. If they ever stop in at the Gloucester session on Tuesday evenings they may never get home!

Have you and the Black Sheep made any plans for another foray to our part of the world? There are still a few lobsters left after your last visit, not to mention appreciative fans.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Evidently there are no other survivors from this session except for me. Odd, there were about 30 people there, most of whom were leading songs. Maybe they're still singing.
I'm too fried after my 90 mile drive back home to do my usual summary. I did stay an extra hour having dinner with Al and Barbara Cuenin from Long Island, NY. We have lots of fun comparing notes on who is doing what.

Let's see I think I led four songs:

Bound Away by Bill Adams
Neptune's Daughter by Bob Watson
Sea Traders by Burt Franklin Jenness
Mid-Watches by Burt Franklin Jenness

There might have been a 5th song but I'm blanking on it.

Linn sounded great and led one of my favorite Great Lakes songs "Lovely Alice" by Sally Rogers.

Barry Finn's wife Justine was there and led a fine version of "My Name is Davy Loughlin (Never Seal)."

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Adventure, don't come by water wait till the summer, I'm afraid that we'll lose all of you in one harsh blow. Would make for a nice song though

Apologies for the number of 60 at Cameron's a week ago. It was actually over 50 and was counted as such. The number was actually 53 people in the bar. What can I say. A key stroke to the right without my bifocals on. Still not too shabby for a cold Tuesday evening in January.
Sounds like a good crew from Gloucester will be making their way to the Press Room on Saturday.

I'm in if someone else drives. Had a moment of panic when I mistakenly thought the NFL AFC championship games was on Saturday, but Jason quickly set me straight. So I can have my cake and eat it, too!

SIXTY attendees at Cameron's?

Me thinks you embellish a wee bit! I'll vouch for the wine fairy, however. She was her benevolent self.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday.
Tom just fill her up with painkillers and get her in the car.
And no snow shovelling for Linn unless one arm can be used.
Wow...Charlie sounds like you have a very busy weekend. Enjoying your newest CD.....nice job on the entire disc.
Past two months has been a blurr....keep hearing the voice of "be careful of what you wish for..." As long as thing are good, just keep wishing.
Hope to see Finn tomorrow evening at Cameron's. Had over 60 people last Tuesday evening at the chantey session.
Our two New Years eve events in Rockport were also SRO.
And the new Gloucester Mayor's inauguration ball was spectacular.
Lots of stuff going on.....
See you all soon.
Doryman and his mate

Hey Charley, get Judy to drive and, in the spirit of research, take shore leave and go on a three day bender, see if some doxy takes you in hand and leaves you skint and left with just your underclothes, ah on second thoughts maybe not such a good idea. just go on a three day bender!

And I WILL be there unless I get waylayed by pain as I was the past two and a half days -- probably atmospheric pressure since we had a thunderstorm and deluge of rain Friday.

The next Shanty/Forebitter Session at the Press Room in Portsmouth NH will be happening on Saturday, 19 January from 3:30 to 7:30 PM.

Al and Barbara Cuenin will be coming up from NY, and Peter and Joanne Souza will be making the trek from Essex.

Linn and I are especially looking forward to this gathering as we had to miss the Dec. session. Hope to see lots of regulars, and wouldn't mind some irregulars as well - Tom
