As for doing the trip in May I'm afraid I'LL still be working then. We don't get out of school till late May and then I'll have some loose ends to tie up before I can get to your side of the world. I won't be in England until about the middle of June. And... if I go anywhere but straight to see my new granddaughter my ass will be roasted by most of my family starting with my daughter and her husband. |

PM for my email if you like :-) Arne, the Fastnet disater was in August ('79) not February and was way out in the open waters of the SW Approaches & southern Irish Sea. If the weather's horrid (not unlikely at this time of year - look at it now!) we'll stay in the Solent. I've had all sorts of weather there in February, from flat calm and bright sunshine to F8 & heavy hail, and ice (not frost, ice!) on the deck. But there's so much shelter and so many harbours and creeks that there's almost always somewhere to go. However, I might be interested in BVIs etc. In fact I know someone who has a new Bavaria 40 out there. What dates are you thinking of? PM if you like. luv & kisses all round xxx Steve |

I imagine it to be no worst that when I took a cold & stormy Thanksgiving sail from Boston to Burmuda in a 48' cutter about 25 yrs ago. I got paid + airfare back to take the week off from work to crew. After the 7 days was up I got my airfare & headed for the airport in Alantic City to head back home. It was fun, my 1st & only bout at seasickness (mild) but we didn't get very far (as far as NJ of all places) before we had to twice head for a safe harbor for repairs & shelter. I opted to head out to sea beyond the GF, could've done the repairs on the go & then drive her downwind (& against the Gulf Stream, I'm sure they wouldn't have known how far to head out) towards the islands but they opted for hugging the coast, jerks! After day 7 I left them in the rigging, rerigging to return to my real day job, I think it was the last time I sailed with idiots, though sailing with idiots may be dangerous it is usually cause for continual excitment & some of the stuff good/funny stories are made of, if you survive. If you do a warm season sail in the future & I happen to have airfare would you count me in? I'll look foward to a report on your venterous sail just to see if I'm asking an idiot or not, not that that would deter me for anything stupid, dangerous or exciting, though I may be getting a bit old for that kind of thing now. It's so safe these days (nanny state, discuss) that drowning can probably only be done by those determined to do so. Steve is a brill skipper, obeying all the rules to the 'T'. So long as he remembers which sign means stop and which means go..tee hee... Spain, 2006 8) (sorry 'in' joke here) I think a good sail and a good sing at the same time, would be a great way of breaking the back of a long, cold, lonely winter. Sal |

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Sally. I certainly don't believe in taking unnecessary risks (or indeed rusks, which is what I typed the first time) and safety first is very much the maxim. I need to pass my Yachtmaster exam soon and losing crew members and boats does tend to cost marks. |

Some lovely sunsets, a lot of wildlife (curlews, loads of sandpipers & oystercathcers and a buzzard up the Beaulieu and a green woodpecker on the way home, not to mention a kestrel stooping). Lovely Chinese in Southampton, preceded by a drink in The London Hotel, clearly the centre of Southampton's gay night-life. Ho hum. So - who's up for doing it at Whitsun, if I can get a pass-out? I'm also giving up the day job so I'm available for skippering any time from September onwards. :-) Steve |

Five crew so far (including me) so one space. But it's a big b oat (41') so we could take up to 7 or even 8 if we have to, if two want to come. Plymouth - Falmouth - Dartmouth area, depending on tides and weather. £200 - £250 or so. No experience needed. Steve |
