Subject: RE: Correct the Digital Tradition From: GUEST,Judy Dyble Date: 17 Jan 08 - 05:28 PM Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but there are several mistakes in the words of the songs that I was involved with on the list of Fairport Convention songs. If you would like me to correct them then I am happy to do so, but I'm not quite sure how to go about it...... |
Subject: DT Correction: Fairport Convention Songs From: Joe Offer Date: 17 Jan 08 - 06:07 PM As stated in the message above (which I moved from another thread), Judy Dyble has some corrections to Fairport Convention songs that are in the Digital Tradition. Judy, I hope you'll see this and post corrections here. It's best to post the complete lyrics, not just telling us to correct the third word in the second line of the sixteenth stanza - which can cause profound confusion. Thanks. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: DT Correction: Fairport Convention Songs From: Nick Date: 17 Jan 08 - 07:39 PM I still listen to and enjoy the first Fairport album even though it must be nearly 40 years since I first listened to it. If it is THE Judy Dyble - thanks for the pleasure. |
Subject: RE: DT Correction: Fairport Convention Songs From: Susan of DT Date: 17 Jan 08 - 08:06 PM Actually Joe, it is easier for me if the sites of the corrections are pointed out, rather than my having to do a letter by letter comparison with a newly posted version of a song. Judy, if you are good with HTML, post the whole lyric with the corrections highlighted in some way, so I can see what to correct. Otherwise, third word in the second line of the sixteenth stanza isn't that bad a way to show it. Also, please identify the song by the filename at the end of the file, since that is the best identifier. Which songs are we talking about? And are these additional versions or corrections? |
Subject: RE: DT Correction: Fairport Convention Songs From: GUEST,Judy Dyble Date: 18 Jan 08 - 04:01 AM These are the songs from the 1st Fairport LP and nearly every song from it has a mistake in it! I thought that if the songs are there they might as well be the correct versions as we sang them, or, if I can check them with the original version, they will be the original words. I hope! Mostly they are single word corrections, but in the case of One Sure Thing there is an extra verse, which was left out of the Fairport version, but appears on the original Jim & Jean (who wrote it) version, and which I have re-instated in the new version which I am about to release as a single in collaboration with the Conspirators. Heavens! that was a long sentence! Hope this is ok. (and yes Nick, it is me, grin!) |

Subject: RE: DT Correction: Fairport Convention Songs From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Jan 08 - 04:16 AM Well, I can see Susan's need - but maybe would it be possible ot post both the correction information and a complete, corrected song? It often takes quite a while for the corrections to appear in the Digital Tradition, and it's nice if people can read them here, complete, right away. I'll add "The Lobster" lyrics to Judy's post to show what I mean. -Joe- |

Some people use their real name, others make something up. a Password, so you can log in or out as suits you. and An e-mail address which is usually only used when someone loses their cookie and forgets their password. Joe will send your password via the e-mail you have given. The e-mail you give is not displayed anywhere on the forum. There are boxes on the form for addresses and phone numbers, but they are not compulsory, so you shouldn't have any worries about private data. The people who run Mudcat don't sell e-mail addresses. There is a section where people can post a profile of their interests or their professional work, but that is purely optional and many of us don't. Subject: RE: DT Correction: Fairport Convention Songs From: GUEST Date: 18 Jan 08 - 08:27 AM >>I'll bring you incense(,) owls by night My wife sings Chelsea Morning and I have always found the above to be something of a bizarre line. Is it a really angry owl? As in "incensed owl". Why would you give someone an angry owl? Or is it an owl who has been perched in an incense-laden atmosphere and presumably smells pleasant as it quietly flies past you - a bit like a live air-freshener. And even if it's not smelly or cross - why would you bring someone an owl? It's very strange behaviour I used to reckon it was an incensed towel which might be quite pleasant. Enjoyed your web site by the way and your descriptions of your return to singing at Cropredy were sweet, and the library experience. |
Subject: RE: DT Correction: Fairport Convention Songs From: Judy Dyble Date: 18 Jan 08 - 08:44 AM As I understand it, the 'incense owl' was similar to today's scented candle holders, possibly it was an owl shaped incense burner in the room in which Ms Mitchell stayed in Chelsea about which she wrote the song. Yes people burnt a lot of incense in the late sixties. Can't think why........ |

Subject: RE: DT Correction: Fairport Convention Songs From: Susan of DT Date: 18 Jan 08 - 10:04 AM Thank you, Judy. Your format was easy to work with and I have made the corrections on the master. Joe - I could move these to the corrections made thread, but I think they will be easier for people to find if I leave them here. |

Subject: RE: DT Correction: Fairport Convention Songs From: Nick Date: 26 Jan 08 - 05:33 PM I'm fascinated as to why they picked up on that particular song after all these years which hasn't had loads of covers to my knowledge - is there a reason? Coincidentally I had seen them advertising for a bass player a while back as they are reasonably local to us (as I was looking to join another band) but felt I might be a little on the ancient side. I heard it last week on myspace and it's very enjoyable - a good update but still true to the original |
Subject: RE: DT Correction: Fairport Convention Songs From: Judy Dyble Date: 26 Jan 08 - 05:48 PM The Conspirators really liked the song and so do I and it was one that we thought would work well together with two lead singers so that was why we chose it!
