Greetings!   Anyone know the lyrics to a song I knew as "Down In The Glen"?   I think it started.........At hush of eventide......... and may have been sung by Andy Srewart. This search must continue until I find it - 'cos my wife's threatening me!

This song became a regular feature of the repertoire of such Scottish singers as Robert Wilson and Kenneth MacKellar.

DOWN IN THE GLEN
Words and music by Harry Gordon and Tommie Connor, 1947.
As recorded by Robert Wilson, 1947.

At hush of eventide,
Over the hills beyond the Clyde,
I go roaming to my cabin, down in the glen.

Though humble it may be,
There an angel waits for me,
In that lonely little cabin, down in the glen.

Across the moonlit heather,
My lassie calls as I roam,
And soon we'll be together
In that heaven we call home.

The sheep are in the fold,
And there's peace worth more than gold,
For that shepherd in that cabin, down in the glen.

Twilight is softly falling
As the sun sinks in the west.
The one I love is calling:
"Shepherd, come home to rest."

Across the moonlit heather,
My lassie calls as I roam,
And soon we'll be together
In that heaven we call home.

The sheep are in the fold,
And there's peace worth more than gold,
For that shepherd in that cabin, down in the glen.

Version sung at home when young:

My mother said to me,
'Would you like a cup of tea?'
I said, 'No, no, I'd like cocoa,
Down in the glen'.

Don't know if there is any more.
Jim Carroll

it is a total mystery to me why anyone would actually want the lyrics to this apallingly sentimental garbage.

if you had been forced to listen to Robert Wilson sing this as often as I was as a child, trust me you would want to block the memory forever ...

Although I don't sing this song -- I do sing sentimental old songs. I find them less pretentious than most of the modern songs where content rules over image and poetry.
I understand, though, how you might not want to hear the same one too often. I do have a horror of being trapped in a nursing home with a "Big Print Song Book"
Cheers, Joy

I remember an advertising jingle on Radio Luxemburg in the 1950s which went something like this:

An angel said to me,
'Would you like a cup of tea?'
I said, 'No, no, I'd like cocoa,
Rowntrees for me'.

I'm always interested in melodies. You can hear this one on YouTube by Robert Wilson himself, with pretty pictures.

I found the tune to be more modern than I expected.
