Subject: Lyr Add: JUST AN HONEST MISTAKE (Limeliters)
From: chico

[Capo +1]
       D
It was just a little tiny teeny,
E7
Just an eeney meeney weeney
A7                D   (D E A)
Just an honest mistake!

Anyone can make an honest mistake
An honest mistake from the heart

          B7                            E7
Like when we broke up the spy ring and slugged the master spy
    A7
Imagine our surprise to learn that he worked for the FBI!

Like that house all full of women, we raided from the blue
And found we pinched some ladies from the [local ACLU]

Like when I told the judge, 'Your honor, that's the killer, right there!'
I sent an innocent man to the electric chair

Like those guys who asked directions in a big black Cheverolet
They were the gang from Brinks and we helped them make their getaway

Mr. Gallop said that Dewey was the winning candidate
And don't forget when Nixon said, 'Tell Kennedy, let's debate!'

Like when we spurned the U.N., to fight across the seas
And found to our chagrin there weren't no 'WMD's'

Like we when skimped on ballots with holes to punch instead
Who would have guessed that all those chads were hanging by a thread?

It was just a little teeny weeney
Should have skipped that last martini
Just an honest mistake!

[OMITA]
Like that house all full of women, we raided from the blue
And found we pinched some ladies from the WCTU

And Mr. Bonaparte marched to Moscow and got clobbered at the gate
And you all know Mr. Ford put out the Edsel

[Modified version of Limeliter's song from the early 1960's; WCTU: Women's Christian Temperance Union.]

I added the last two verses about WMD's and Chads, and modified the Nixon one to make it rhyme

I didn't find a Limeliters recording, but I checked Spotify and found two recordings:

  • An album titled A Jolly Theatrical Season, by Robert Morse and Charles Nelson Reilly
  • By Stanley Simmonds and Ted Thurston on the original cast album of the 1961 Broadway musical Let It Ride.
It's a great song.
