Don't think so MMario, Martin's one doesn't scan well to that tune..... but there's bound to be one it fits to....

I came across these unharvested (now harvested) gems when I was looking for something else. Alison's lyrics have a tune, but Martin's do not. Has anybody found a tune?

Yes Joe, I'm here! Just back from a week in West Clare, sitting in pubs listening to great tunes and great songs!

I agree the set I came up with wouldn't fit the ubiquitous.... I've never heard it sung but will investigate further!

Nice song, Alison! Martin's version doesn't seem to work to the tune of "Star of County Down." The tune of "Never Grow Old" might have possibilities - and similarities in the text. Hey Martin, are you there? What's the tune?

Hi
At long last...... (to the tune of "The star of the County Down.")

THE LAND WHERE THE SHAMROCKS GROW

I'll sing tonight of a fairyland in the lap of the ocean set,
And of all the lands I've travelled in, it's the fairest that I've met.
Where the willows weep and the roses creep and the balmy breezes blow.
In that dear old land, that sweet old land. The land where the shamrocks grow.

I'll sing tonight of that lonely churchyard where my father's bones are laid.
Where the cloister stands, those ruins grand that our bloody foes have made.
I'll strike the harp with mournful dirge 'til the glittering tears they flow.
In that dear old land, that sweet old land. The land where the shamrocks grow.

I'll sing tonight of those heroes bold who sailed across the main.
Transported to a foreign land to wear an iron chain.
For four and twenty long, lone years those men were forced to roam.
Far from that land, that dear old land. The land where the shamrocks grow.

But och! Alas, how can I sing? 'tis a convicts last refrain.
And the lovely land of my love and youth I ne'er will see again.
In a convict's grave in Van Dieman's land they'll lay my body down.
Far from that land, that dear old land. The land where the shamrocks grow.^^

Have fun
Slainte
Alison

Hi

Martin....how should I put this..........no, sorry!!

However I have managed to find out where the fella I heard singing it lives and have snail-mailed a request off to him, which hopefully he'll answer when he gets back from France. (Aah, the Dordogne in summer..... hard to beat.........although Dingle and Kerry were on the TV here last night.........but I digress........)

When I get the lyrics I'll get back to you.

Watch this space.

Don't know why but when I see your name I have this strange desire to be walking on a deserted beach on Achill Island.

Anyway, back to the real world.

Slainte

Alison

Hi

Martin you are a wonderful man, which makes me feel very guilty about telling you that this isn't the one I've heard.

The one I've heard done must be a variation. I can remember that it mentioned a "Fairyland." and that's about all.

I like this one though. If I find the one I'm looking for I'll post it for you.,

Thanks for the hard work.

Alison.
Got it!

THE LAND WHERE THE SHAMROCK GROWS

There's a beautiful land that is dear to my heart, an emerald set in the sea
And Oh, with the last drop of blood would I part, to see that green island set free
'Tis the spot that Dame Nature is pleased to adorn and where water like bright crystal flows
'Tis the land where O'Connell and Emmett were born, the land where the shamrock grows

How long will it be, dear land of my birth, ere the chains of the tyrant shall fall
And peace, like sunlight that shines on your earth, bring joy and contentment to all?
How long will your flag, with its harp and its green, hang low 'neath the thistle and rose?
How long till oppression no longer is seen in the land where the shamrock grows?

Oh Erin acushla, though crushed as thou art, by the heel of a despot in power
Fear not - there are thousands of brave willing hearts who await but the time and the hour
To strike in defence of their dear native land and drive from thy green fields the foe
Who dared for centuries past to command, in the land where the shamrock grows

Harding's Dublin Songster (c. 1850)^^

Regards
