I just found an old Elpico reel to reel recorder in the actic - I pluged it in without removing the years of dust and it blew every switch in the house.... anyone know where I could get it repaired in Ireland or where I could get the tape converted to digital.

We are starting a local music archive in the West of Ireland

If you're starting the archive now, you're almost certainly better with digital storage. The state of reel-to-reels illustrates why!

If you've got existing reel-to-reel material, there are companies which specialise in transferring this to a modern recording. It's worth checking this, because it might be cheaper than reviving your reel-to-reel and doing the conversion yourself.

I dearly miss reel-to-reel machines.

Around 1970 I inherited an old Sunbeam with built in speakers and tube amp, and another similar one of forgotten make and model. Learned how to flange, echo, and delay with those machines.

A few years later, I purchased an Akai 10.5" reel with VU meters, stereo and four track mono, and a rare Pioneer rack mount 7" machine for mixing down. They were so "undigital" sounding, easy to record to, could store lots of tunes at slower speeds and sounded great to record at high speeds. Neither one ever gave me an once of trouble and were only abandoned when tape got hard to get, and digital took over.

I have found that old reel to reel machines will often 'come back to life' if you play them for a couple of hours or more. It seems to loosen up the moving parts and probably rejuvenates the capacitors a bit.

Give it a try, you don't have much to lose.

From my personal experience.

The tapes tend to be clean. They have been stored in almost optimal conditions...dry...mold-free and have the original material intact.

It is frequently the player/recorder that has a "problem." Whatever was used for the "rubber-trust" has deterioated. Your tape will "gum up" and no amount of "cleansing alcohol" can retreive the five seconds that have become "bubble-gummed" inside your player.

Become creative.

Take the precise (micrometer reading) of your "rubber-wheel." Search, and replace.

Your system is probably good...it is the mechanics (old rubber) that pose a "problem"...you can then change the input/gain coming off the feed.

Jim - Mr C. Braddock at the Tape Recorder Centre in Blackpool, Lancashire used to keep my Tandberg reel-to-reel and cassette machines working. He usually had Uher, Ferrograph and Revox machines of various ages in stock, so I guess he could cope with any machine you need working on. My machines haven't needed his attention in recent years as they are getting used less and less, but he still appears to be operating from the same shop;-

Would appreciate advice.
We are starting a local music archive in the West of Ireland and have a number of reel-to-reel tape recorders in need of service and repair.
Have tried and failed to find a service engineer here in Ireland, so it looks as if it will have to be UK.
At the present time we need repair work on a Uher Report and a Ferrograph 7, but I'm sure there will be others.
