Nurse Ratchet might be nicer than some I've met here, but keep yo' hands off all of them until you're recovered enough to handle them as a gentleman should. John |
Subject: RE: BS: Big hugs for a Big man, Mudguard From: MudGuard Date: 24 Jan 08 - 07:03 AM Hi! Thanks Liz, for opening the thread, now the whole world knows ... I am not big! I'm only tall (according to my English teacher, tall is used for the vertical expansion, big for the horizontal expansion). Thanks to all the people (known or unknown) for the many good wishes! For those who don't know: it is a "Hernia inguinalis" that is going to be fixed. The operation will be on Tuesday, 29th January, probably late morning (local time, Munich, Germany). Emma, I tried the recipe, and it is quite close (but still not as good) to the Portaferry pot. Skarpi, see above, I now can make whatever amount of the stew for myself - no need to wait for Portaferry ;-) Thanks to all! I'll report back as soon as possible after the operation ... Andreas a/k/a Andy a/k/a MudGuard |

Subject: RE: BS: Big hugs for a Big man, Mudguard From: Liz the Squeak Date: 24 Jan 08 - 07:40 AM Well Andy, you had mentioned it on another thread and I thought you could use some good thoughts, you ask for so little here and deserve so much. I've got a step ladder ready and waiting for the next time you visit. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Big hugs for a Big man, Mudguard From: MudGuard Date: 24 Jan 08 - 10:16 AM Last time you used the stairs to jump on me ... ;-) Liz, no problem with publishing it to the whole world. It was publicly available anyway (though I guess this thread draws more attention to non-Portaferry-participants than the Portaferry/Loughstock threads). |
Subject: RE: BS: Big hugs for a Big man, Mudguard From: Bill D Date: 24 Jan 08 - 11:25 AM ah, well...I have had that operation....twice. Last time was almost 30 years ago. It was tedious, but is fairly routine. They kept me in the hospital overnight, then tossed me out! I wish you well and confidently expect you'll do just fine...but no trampoline lessons or Greco-Roman wrestling for awhile! We'll watch for your return. |
Subject: RE: BS: Big hugs for a Big man, Mudguard From: frogprince Date: 24 Jan 08 - 12:23 PM Best wishes for a speedy recupe from Michigan, USA. I had that operation 54 years ago. I don't know if it was from lifting too much around the farm, or just a weakness from birth that caught up with me when I was 12. Back then I was in the hospital for a few days; (Americans spend time "in the hospital", not just "in hospital"). I see that the word is, with the current approach, you should be "out of hospital" in no time. Dean |

Subject: RE: BS: Big hugs for a Big man, Mudguard From: Herga Kitty Date: 24 Jan 08 - 02:26 PM Andy - long time no see (Stony Stratford gathering, I think) but I'm sending healing thoughts from Harrow, and hoping that Harrow Hill and the Bavarian Alps don't get in the way! Kitty |
Subject: RE: BS: Big hugs for a Big man, Mudguard From: MudGuard Date: 24 Jan 08 - 03:22 PM Herga, Stony Stratford was the first time we met (2002), but we also briefly met at Whitby Folk Week (2003). The Bavarian Alps are south of Munich, so they should not be in the way unless someone has moved Harrow into the Mediterranean ;-) Bill, it may be fairly routine for the doctors, but it is NOT routine for me. It's the first surgery done on me ... |
Subject: RE: BS: Big hugs for a Big man, Mudguard From: Mrrzy Date: 24 Jan 08 - 04:37 PM Best wishes to you, and here is a funny story about this... My dad had such a hernia, he was born with it, and it never gave him a moment's trouble... but... when he became a US state department employee in his early 50's, they made him have it fixed surgically anyway. Apparently you can't work for USAID and be damaged goods or something... So then, being the man he was, since they had shaved him "there" he decided to stop shaving his beard, "to see which hair grew faster" - but oddly enough, even though his moustache and muttonchops were not even grey yet, the beard grew in snow-white. So he tried to dye it with Grecian Formula or something and turned it mustard yellow... so he had to shave it back off. That was when he shaved the muttonchops and just kept the moustache... But I never heard which grew faster, now that I think about it! |

Subject: RE: BS: Big hugs for a Big man, Mudguard From: JohnInKansas Date: 25 Jan 08 - 01:10 AM Apparently you can't work for USAID and be damaged goods or something... Subject: RE: BS: Big hugs for a Big man, Mudguard From: GUEST,Norval Date: 27 Jan 08 - 12:20 PM Mudguard: Best Wishes from a youngster (66) who had the exact same surgery a short 2 months ago in Alberta (Canada). Giok's "IT" link above closely describes my own hospital experience. After the surgery, my surgeon explained there would be swelling and bruising which will subside in 3-4 weeks. He also said to watch for bleeding and infection. A pain killer may be required so a prescription will be written. The surgeon also said to have a laxative on hand as straining in the bathroom would undo his good work. No bathing is allowed for 2 weeks as it will loosen the surgical tape; only a very quick shower is permitted. He also stressed "Do not lift anything over 10 pounds for 6 weeks". Your doctor has probably explained all of this to you. It is important for a good recovery. My procedure was done as Day Surgery, wheeled into the operating room at 3:00pm and back home by 7:00pm. I am a Guest but read here often and am familiar with your contributions as well as the others in this thread. Again, my Best Wishes for an uneventful and speedy recovery. Norval |
Subject: RE: BS: Big hugs for a Big man, Mudguard From: Liz the Squeak Date: 28 Jan 08 - 11:54 AM Thinking of you dear... I would give you a hug but I have a plague now, so I won't. Just see me in the recovery ward after. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Big hugs for a Big man, Mudguard From: MudGuard Date: 28 Jan 08 - 02:06 PM Thanks again for all those good wishes! Also for those by PM, I won't answer all these before the operation, I'll try to answer them afterwards ... Btw, the one thing I don't want to hear from the surgeon when I'm slowly awaking after the surgery is: "Now that was the sex change, what's up next?" |
