Subject: Review: What's your favorite live album?
From: PeadarOfPortsmouth
Date: 25 Jan 08 - 03:24 PM

Here I am, annoyed at work, dying for the end of the day so I can drive as fast as I can to tonight's session...

I want a diversion.

So my question to all 'catters...what's your favorite live album and why?

While I'm currently playing "Old Blind Dogs - Live" with heavy rotation, I'd have to say my favorite concert album is the Makem & Clancy one. Songs I heard growing up, songs that were new when I first heard it, and everytime I hear it I smile. And say what you will, they new how to work a crowd.

How about you?

Peter

The three live albums by Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie - but then every live album by Pete Seeger is a favorite of mine. One of my big regrets in life is that I've never seen Pete Seeger perform live. What's most wonderful about him is how he engages an audience and gets them all to sing. When you mix that with Arlo's wacky storytelling, it's downright heavenly. I've seen Arlo live several times, but Pete hasn't been to Sacramento for a concert for a long, long time.

I liked the first three songs on side two of John Martyn's "Live at Leeds" album. The way he connects those songs with his playing is just amazing.

Joe,

I remember watching a Pete & Arlo concert on PBS as a teen. I still have one of the songs from that rattling around in my head. It was a jewish folk song, I think, that went "Zehna, zehna [etc.].../Alna, alna...[etc.]".

Still knw the melody by heart, but don't know the lyrics.

Peter

Dougie Maclean - Live From the ends of the Earth (one side is from a concert in Scotland, and one from a concert in Australia - is that allowed?) followed closely by Bob Marley - Live!

By the way, has anybody heard Paul Brady's Liberty Tapes? It's pretty much a live album of his early trad album 'Welcome Here Kind Stranger' but played live with a few additions like Arthur McBride - supposed to be good but I haven't got round to getting it yet.

I'd agree about Dougie's 'Live From The Ends Of The Earth' Rich, but it has to draw equal with 'As You Were' by Show of Hands, their double CD of live appearances up and down the country.

I'm with Joe Offer.I have seen Arlo and Pete about conservatively 5 times each and five together.I know of no duo (or individually)that has such a magnetic, magical connection with their audience.Unsurpassed, in my opinion.

I like Dougie's live CD too, though his proclivity for having the audience sing along for eighteen thousand choruses (and then another ten by themselves) is really annoying on a CD, I'll admit. And I adore Dougie, too.

I love listening to Alison Krauss & Union Station Live. Though I must admit to a shameful urge to smack Alison silly and scream, "Can't you hit even ONE wrong note? You're making the rest of us look bad! Arrrgh!" I've never heard anyone pull off such a vocally perfect performance live...it's utterly maddening. ;)

This isn't folky, really, but I also love Moxy Fruvous' "Live Noise". Great geek album, including lots of weird little between-song vignettes that leave all but a true Fruhead scratching one's head and going, "huh?"

I really love "Get Yer Ya Yas Out" by the Rolling Stones. It's faked, of course. There are tracks with three guitar parts on and several songs have harmony vocals, which they never could do live in those days. Yet it has that dark, brooding power of the band at their peak along with the virtuoso guitar playing of Mick Taylor. It was also the last real blues album they ever made.
On the folk side, I loved Paul Downes and Phil Beer. However, although their only live album had several tracks, which were inspired, it lacked the editing, which would have given it some cohesion. I recently heard some early live stuff of Dave Swarbeck and Martin Carthy. It was one of the few times I have ever wished that I had been born five or ten years earlier.

The first side especially of B.B. King "Live At The Regal" was as good an example of working an audience as there ever was, though the whole thing's good. Set the standard years ago and is still unbeatable.

That old one of a Newport Folk Festival, I forget which one, where Eric von Schmidt gets kicked under the table, or something, for starting a dirty stanza to "My Love Come Rolling Down", and the old blind man goes into a trance & plays "Rock of Ages" on the harmonica again & again till they fade him out, and.... That's live as in life!

First, it's always been a toss up between the live sides of Back into the Future featuring the Jones / Ryan / Williams / Lewis / Youatt lineup and Live at the Padget Rooms, Penarth which features the classic quartet of Jones / Ace/ Williams / Leonard. The former features a near definitive C'mon (with the Gwalia Male Voice Choir) and the latter the absolutely definitive Many are Called But Few Get Up. I think right now I'd for the latter, especially the newly released double disk edition on Esoteric which includes the entire gig, including a rendering of Spunk Rock that even surpasses that on Greasy Truckers. Both of these are by the Manband by the way (otherwise known as Man; big on the posters lads but damn near impossible to Google!).

Second would be Soft Machine Live at the Paradiso, March 1969.

And third Peter Bellamy's Songs and Rummy Conjurin' Tricks.

I'm also digging Old Blind Dogs Live and particularly love their version of Tramps and Hawkers, rousing and with great singing and playing.
Also Grateful Dead (hard to pick one but the one unofficially called Skull and Roses with "Bertha" on it is K.A.)
Townes Van Zandt at Gruene Hall.
Pete and Arlo the first live one (because I haven't heard the others).
The Planxty reunion CD which you can purchase with the DVD and ditto the Solas 10 year reunion CD and DVD.

I can only second Sedayne as regards the Man Band who are local heroes in Swansea....and the choice of Pete Bellamy who I saw in Neath of all places in 1976.
Mickey Jones the guitarist and singer with MAN is seriously ill in hospital. Such a talented musician.

Some very nice suggestions so far, but I'll go with

A Canary's Song - The Smith Sisters with Al Petteway Live at the Birchmere - Why? I don't know. I guess just great songs, singing, guitar, bass and bohdran.

And

Live Wizardry - Silly Wizard - Same reasons as above, except add tunes and replace bohdran with fiddle and box.

The eponymous Judy Henske album. Recorded in Hollywood in an NBC recording studio with an audience of about 40-50 people ca. 1962 or 1963. What makes the album great--besides the great singing--was the nervous patter and giggles between songs; I believe this was her first solo album. I still play this album a lot.

Harvey Reid "In Person." Harvey is one of the greats, especially live. His eleven minute "history" of "Cocaine Blues" is both amazing musically and hilarious.

From the description on his web-site (www.woodpecker.com):
"142 minutes!! 2 double- length live CD's, recorded at 15 different concerts. . .40 songs. . .included along with 18 traditional songs and 14 Reid originals are songs by the Rolling Stones, J.J. Cale, and Bill Monroe."

Just remembered, as I always forget its a live album. Tom Waits 'Nighthawks at the Diner'. Although it was an original album release, the way he recorded it was to convert a studio into a bar/ diner for two nights and perform the album front to back on both nights to a small audience. I think they then took whichever they preferred and released it as the album.

Absolutely fantastic album, definitely the peak for me from his 'Dive Bar Jazz/ Blues' period. Fantastic in-between-song story telling, and you can't go wrong with songs like 'Better off without a wife', 'Warm Beer and Cold Women' and 'Eggs and Sausage (in the back of a Cadillac with Susan Michelson)'.

If you haven't got it, get a copy and listen to it from front to back, preferably with a couple of bottles of red.

Vin Garbutt's "Plugged" is terrific! It captures the essence of the artist: his great singing, great humour and a collection of great songs. I also have a soft spot for a live album by John Stewart from the 70s; finally, I must mention Jackson Browne's live album as it, again, captures the artist beautifully.

I forgot to list another one that's high on the list. John Coltrane with the Thelonius Monk Quartet, Live and Carnegie Hall. Too cool.

Also, since people have raised the quasi-live (studio with audience), I'm gonna add Eric Clapton's "Unplugged" performance. A few may pooh-pooh it because it's too commercial or got overplayed (a lot) on the radio, but it still is one of those albums that I think "Wow" whenever I put it on.

Thanks for the great responses, BTW. You've given me a lot to look at/listen to.

Peter

Last Waltz and Rock of Ages by the Band. Also, slightly sheepishly, Alchemy by Dire Straits. It made me want to play the guitar when I was eight!

I could not choose one but here are some of them:

  • Jean Ritchie And Doc Watson Live At Folk City

  • A Place To Be, Fox Hollow Folk Festival 10th Anniversary LP (Sandy Paton sings on this one)

  • Any Utah Phillips live recording

  • Precious Friend - Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie

  • At the Point Live - Christy Moore

  • After Hours (Recorded Live In Paris)- Bothy Band

Gosh, I could go on and on.

All the best,

Mick

My favourite Coltrane is Live in Japan (1966) with Alice, Rashied, Pharoah & Garrison (it is Garrison isn't it? Must check...) with Trane & Pharaoh doing My Favourite Things on altos - awesome!

Christy Moore at the Point is another long forgotton favourite too, thanks for reminding me. Has anyone seen that vintage clip on You Tube of Planxty on the Late Show doing The Blacksmith with Christy (on harmonium!) looking about 90... Live Christy is something to be savoured though, a real treasure.

Talking about treasures, here's another:

Jim Eldon - The Brid Fiddler.

Since non folk/trad seems to be allowed, I'll add Doing the Thing, The Horace Silver Quintet at the Village Gate. Finally available in CD after originally being issued in 1961.

Back in the trad realm, there's The Boys of the Lough, Live at Carnegie Hall, and Battlefield Band,Home Ground, Live from Scotland.

GUESTirishenglish, don't be too hard on yourself for overlooking Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison. The topic is "your favorite live album" not the greatest live album ever recorded.

I wish that my favorite live album was "B.B. King Live at Ole Miss" since we were in the audience the night it was recorded. One of the best performances I've ever seen, but when the album came out they had crapped it up by dubbing in strings and stuff. Just ruined it for me. I can't even imagine why someone thought that was a good idea.

I would also add in Focus at the Rainbow, 801 Live, the Sensational Alex Harvey Band Live and Misty in Roots Live at the Counter-Eurovision.

801 Live! Haven't heard that for years; that's essentially the old Quiet Sun band if I remember rightly doing choice covers - Tomorrow Never Knows, You Really Got Me etc. Features Bill 'Lib Dem' MacCormick who also played with Robert Wyatt's short lived Matching Mole; there's been a couple of choice live CDs from their archive in recent years via the ever resourceful Cunieform.

Here's another - June 1st, 1974

And not forgetting Robert Wyatt Live at Drury Lane, September 1974 which features Rock Bottom in its gloriously subverted entirity, worth it for Dave Stewart's awesome organ solo on Sea Song alone. I wonder if Rachel Unthank has heard it yet?

Paul Brady's Missing Liberty Tapes is at the top of my list, mentioned earlier in the thread and well worth acquiring. Terrific energy, a historical time capsule of traditional Irish music in Dublin in 1974.
I second the nomination of Geoff Muldaur's Beautiful Isle of Somewhere, recorded live in Germany Geoff though the audience was rather cool to him, just a cultural phenomenon, fun to hear him muttering Danke Schoen bewtween songs. This appearance is what brought him bacl out on the road, and I am glad of it.

Right Bill, I forgot The Liberty Tapes even though it's in the truck's CD machine and gets played all the time. Old Blind Dogs Play Live is also something else.
