Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch concert From: Andrez Date: 05 Feb 08 - 10:04 PM So, tough question. George is coming to Oz for the National Folk festival. I have only ever heard one track of his that I really loved. If I had to choose one of the seven CD's to buy which would it be (budgets might allow for a second one but I cant count on that as yet). Cheers, Andrez |
Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch concert From: George Papavgeris Date: 05 Feb 08 - 11:41 AM First review just in: "Born in Salonika, Greece in 1953, singer/guitarist George Papavgeris discovered folk music in Oxford in the early 70s, but only became a songwriter in recent years. Since then, his songs have been covered by the likes of Andy Irvine, Roy Bailey and Martyn Wyndham-Read. Listening to his seventh album Life's Eyes, it's easy to understand why. The deeply affecting 'Regrets' was written following the death of Papavgeris' father, but will resonate powerfully with anyone who's lost a loved one – and besides that, its melody is simply beautiful, bringing to mind the best work of Leonard Cohen. The waltz-tempo 'Harbour Lights', inspired by the singer's former home in Thessaloniki, is a classic in the making, with a universal appeal that goes far beyond the specificity of its origin. 'Rush Hour' is another highlight, sung as a round-style trio of harmony and countermelody with labelmates Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer, who contribute an impressive variety of backing instruments elsewhere on the album: Swan plays double bass, flute and Scottish smallpipes, all very well indeed, while Dyer wields the guitar, accordion and keyboards with equal aplomb and grace. Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch concert From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 28 Jan 08 - 07:02 PM it gave me a bit of a shock that George has 7 CDs cos I immediately counted those on my shelf & there were only 5 & I thought I had every title. What have I missed? Another example of my butterfly mind cos I'm listening to "For my next trick" (& loving it, naturally!) so the case is on my desk next to my keyboard & easily visible as I type. See ya 8th March when I can get my copy sandra |

Have a great night, look forward to getting my hands on a copy of the said CD soon! Now heres a question..... How many of you read in that first post...... Soft Long Cock Hotel? Perhaps it was just my mind playing tricks on me again!!!!!!! I wonder what the psychologists out there would make of that! Cheers, Lucy |
Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch concert From: GUEST, Tom Bliss Date: 27 Jan 08 - 07:25 PM George. You are a talentless useless no-hoper of a man. How DARE you waste everyone's time with your pfiffle and your pfaffle, and your songs of no worth, value or even merit!? And as for your 'Los Marbles,' Hah! (I say)! Who? Jonny and Vicki? PAH! They are even more useless at everythink than you are, and they can barely play their (many and very difficult) instruments, let alone be nice and polite and talented and lovable people. (not) (at all) Seriously, though: Have a fantastic night, all. I'd be there like a shot if I could. Tom Psst, draw near and harken people: I've witnessed the genesis of this album, from first takes at Doug's studio to final mixes at La Teverna Papavgeris and it's the best thing El Greko has done yet. Powerful, simple... deep and polished yet fresh as a newly folded dolmades. J and V provide just enough support but no more, and it all hangs together beautifully. If it's not R2 album of the year in 09 I'll, I'll err, speak sharply to John Leonard. |

I have to say, that for the first time in my life, I considered booking a reservation to fly across the pond with no other reason than to attend a concert! But then the voice of reason kicked in......... Congrats, George! I'll be looking forward to hearing your new CD! KT |

Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch conct From: Barry Finn Date: 27 Jan 08 - 04:26 PM I was getting ready to book a flight when I noticed it wasn't a "Free Lunch" as I first thought. I then looked at the exchange rate & then the flight price I decieded that it would take more than a free lunch with George to make the whole adventure no so cost preventive. I'm just gonna have to find a job one of these days. Until then, have a good launch. Barry |
