Looks like Island Thyme Morris has got a scratch side as well so you'll have two Vancouver Island sides. May require a second keg, especially with the forecast high between 33 and 37! Need to create summer Border kit.

"The Princeton Traditional Music Society is pleased to announce the First Annual Princeton Traditional Music Festival, taking place on two stages in downtown Princeton on the weekend of l6/17 August 2008. The stages will operate from noon to six pm on both days. Parking is ample and restaurants close at hand.

The Festival, which is free, will feature over eighty performers of traditional music and song. Over the course of the weekend, you will hear Celtic music, cowboy poetry, fiddle tunes, sea shanties, logger's poetry, accordion tunes, traditional ballads, English country dance music, bagpipe music, First Nations drumming and singing, and Inuit throat singing, and you'll see Morris dancing from two Morris "sides".

The performers, from as far away as San Francisco and as near as Hedley, include Across the Pond, Alex Atamanenko, Eric and Betty Armstrong, Jon Bartlett and Rika Ruebsaat, Black Sheep Morris dancers, Celtic Spirit, Chris Corrigan & Brad Ovenell-Carter, The Cutters, Bob Doucet, Joseph Dubé, Lorne Dufour, Jim Edmondson & Lyn Pinkerton, J.D. Rika and I are close to finishing a CD titled "Now It's Called Princeton: Songs and Poems from the Upper Similkameen", with 28 items, mostly drawn from Phil Thomas' collecting trip through here in 1963, and the balance from the Similkameen Star or Princeton Star, from 1900 onwards. The great mass of material is mining- (mostly hard rock) related, and much of it will be featured at the Festival here, 16/17 August.

Sounds wonderful. I always enjoy the occasional hours you and Rika do with Sheryl McKay on CBC because your scholarship and musicality are so keen. BC Labor history is appparently (not surprisingly) as contentious as that of the neighbors to the near and further south, Everett and Seattle and Portland and San Francisco, and all the forests and mines to the east of those coastal cities. Clearly the festival format is loose and inclusive. 8/16 and 17 is on my calendar in red.

Thanks, Carter, look forward to meeting you! Yes, it's Miner country but more to the point, it's mining country. Gold first found here 1885 in Granite Creek, then coal (there are worked seams under this house!) and copper (at Copper Mountain). We have vernacular songs from each of these industries - the local paper (Similkameen Star, 1900- )is a good source for material like this; plus we have railway and ranching songs. We're hoping to run mining song workshops with representation from the Vancouver Island mines, the Crows Nest Pass mines and maybe Glace Bay from NS. We also have unions, strikes, and the Klan (seriously!) in our history, all generating songs, too. A rich heritage indeed.

Been through Princeton many times, usually en route to Jasper, and it's as Jon says, beautiful territory, and let me add, ESPECIALLY in August. If you go you will have also have been in one of the home areas of Bill Miner, celebrated outlaw and jail break artist not just from Georgia but from the Nicola Valley of BC as well. Well done, Jon, and I hope to be at Number One.

I'm pleased to announce the First Annual Princeton Traditional Music Festival, the title for which tells you pretty much everything you need to know, except the date, which is 16/17 August 2008. We're up in the mountains here, 3 hours drive east of Vancouver BC, which is where you'll fly in to if you're coming by air. Performers will get food, accommodation and a very good time. We can promise everyone open hills and horses, good local beers and wines, and a free festival of traditional music.
