Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: Rockhen Date: 14 Apr 08 - 07:30 PM Just realised I never posted back. Thanks to all those who gave suggestions re Show of Hands tracks to listen to. We really enjoyed the gig and I am definitely going to see them again when I get chance. My experience was that I thought they were brilliant and really entertaining performance-wise as well as musically. |

Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: GUEST,The Mole Catcher's Apprentice Date: 15 Feb 08 - 12:02 PM "It is the spark that causes the explosion, remove that spark, and the explosive reaction doesn't take place" I think there are several sparks that need to be watched carefully, the resultant explosion...well best not to even think about that Charlotte (keeping a strict eye open) |
Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: Peace Date: 15 Feb 08 - 11:49 AM Sparks do not per se cause the explosion. Natural gas--for example--is 'dangerous' as regards explosions and sparks provided the concentration is below 5% or above 15%. (I'm going by memory on those figures, so don't try this at home.) It will go boom between those figures. |
Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: GUEST,The Mole Catcher's Apprentice Date: 13 Feb 08 - 11:05 AM I think the double CD Roots - The best of Show of Hands is definitely good value for money, and in this case it may well be the best.. Charlotte (staying on the track next to the furrows) |

Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: The Mole Catcher's Apprentice (inactive) Date: 12 Feb 08 - 04:37 PM and you can't say fairer than that. any suggestions should be put on a postcard and sent to the little man who runs the corner shop in Pocklington..he won't be able to do anything about it, but he does like getting post Charlotte (we went to separate schools together) |
Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: The Mole Catcher's Apprentice (inactive) Date: 12 Feb 08 - 04:10 PM this is a thread regarding the Show of Hands gig in Pocklington on 3rd of April...as a side bar to this, I note that there two Victorian Cemetery Chapels up for sale in Pocklington....that could be useful to the arts community Charlotte (waiting for the electrician or someone like him) |
Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: GUEST,The Mole Catcher's Apprentice Date: 12 Feb 08 - 03:55 PM Cecilia Sharp? *LOL* You HAVE got to be joking?...that's priceless. Charlotte (very little goes over my head) anyway, Show of Hands at Pocklington, eh? from what little I've heard from them, it should be a great evening all round..pity I can't be there. Charlotte (very little goes over my head) |

Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: theleveller Date: 12 Feb 08 - 03:47 PM "let's make it two pints, OK?" If you're going to Pocklington you have to buy two pints - one for the interval. Steve and Phil usually come into the bar for a drink afterwards so you can buy them two as well. Me and mrsleveller will be there so you can buy us two as well (hey, glad it's not my round!). This thread's starting to sound like the Beeb board in the days of Lizzie and Cecilia Sharp. Now i wonder who 'GUEST I've had enough' could be.... |
Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: Peace Date: 12 Feb 08 - 03:44 PM OK. Bathing suit optional. |

Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: Banjiman Date: 12 Feb 08 - 03:37 PM Is this peace breaking out (that's peace not Peace!)? If so mine's a pint of bitter please. Another Guest, I understand your point, but do you "guests" have to be so vitriolic, it does come across as bullying? I'm off to play my banjo....enough of this already. Paul |
Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: Banjiman Date: 12 Feb 08 - 03:12 PM Banned or not....it still looks suspiciously like bullying to me. I don't like that. I would take the "complaints" more seriously from people who were mature enough to use their regular Mudcat names rather than posting as guests. Paul |
Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: The Mole Catcher's Apprentice (inactive) Date: 12 Feb 08 - 03:10 PM My point proven. Charlotte (who isn't your friend) |
Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: GUEST,Another Guest Date: 12 Feb 08 - 03:07 PM So, people who aren't banned shouldn't be allowed to complain about someone who IS BANNED still being able to post? The point my friends is she is not supposed to be on here, period! That comes from the management, who operate this forum. If they say no, we have to abide their choice, and if YOU disagree with that, then it is you who should be going to another forum. If it was just someone who got under your skin, I would say, just ignore, but this is someone who has been banned, under her name and any pseudonyms. Thank you |
Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: The Mole Catcher's Apprentice (inactive) Date: 12 Feb 08 - 02:57 PM Seems to me this "guest" and their ilk ae everything they accuse Lizzie Cornish of being...I'd add more, but I do otherwise like this forum alot and it seems to me the few aren't worth the effort of the many. Personally I's recommend to them...another forum... Charlotte (travel arrangements R Us) |
Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: Banjiman Date: 12 Feb 08 - 02:43 PM .....and I'm 110% behind Peace in this game of 2 halves....... Life is also too short for personal vendettas......can we all just try and maintain a sense of perspective and a maybe even a sense of humour? Paul |
Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: Peace Date: 12 Feb 08 - 02:37 PM And that's too bad because I always liked you. |
Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: Peace Date: 12 Feb 08 - 02:36 PM OK. I understand that, Guest. What I don't understand is why--when you dislike a person/personna so much you get outside yourself with anger and go to all the trouble of seeking out her posts so you can rip into her. "And I do love people like 'Peace' who come on here and tell us that they're '100%' in agreement. Why not 86.57% or 110%, the latter being much loved by footballers?" And since you chose to single me out, I guess you and I have an issue now. |
Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: Peace Date: 12 Feb 08 - 02:09 PM "Oh, and lest I forget, 'Banjiman', Mad Lizzie is banned from Mudcat yet continues to rant and rave on these pages whenever she's run out of G&T." No doubt YOU are banned on Mudcat or else you'd use your Mudcat name, wouldn't you? |
Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: Banjiman Date: 12 Feb 08 - 01:55 PM "Oh, and lest I forget, 'Banjiman', Mad Lizzie is banned from Mudcat yet continues to rant and rave on these pages whenever she's run out of G&T." Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: KeithofChester Date: 12 Feb 08 - 12:33 PM Well, the car went off for a service today, with the CD player loaded up with Show of Hands Greatest Hits, but it's just come back with the radio on and tuned to Chris Evans I know it's not Radio 1, but I do perhaps think that perhaps I should give Lizzie the garage's service reception telephone number so she can tell them the error of their ways tomorrow. |
Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: KeithofChester Date: 12 Feb 08 - 12:09 PM The first seven of the songs listed by Keith on CD1 are a safe bet, as they all appear on their recent DVD tour of Topsham. That is worth buying. THAT "Tour of Topsham" DVD is outstandingly good. There was much muttering originally about it not being shot in high definition, but that just means you don't get to see every bead of sweat like you do in the "Christy Moore Live in Dublin 2006" one. Looks very good on my TV anyway. Sound quality is excellent too. I'd love them to get the same crew to film the Downes & Beer reunion gigs at Nettlebed or Ely in June, but I can't quite see that happening somehow. |

Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: KeithofChester Date: 12 Feb 08 - 10:12 AM Take a look at the tracklisting of the Roots - Best of CD on somewhere like their website or Amazon. If you listen to those you'll have most of the more famous Show of Hands songs. Actually I'll paste them here. Disc: 1 1. Roots 2. Are We Alright 3. Exile 4. Country Life 5. Widecombe Fair 6. The Falmouth Packet / Haul Away Joe 7. Santiago 8. Armadas 9. The Blue Cockade 10. Crow on the Cradle 11. The Preacher 12. Cousin Jack 13. Cold Frontier 14. Hard Shoulder 15. Captains 16. The Galway Farmer Disc: 2 1. Columbus (Didn't Find America) 2. You're Mine 3. The Blind Fiddler 4. The Setting / Mary From Dungloe 5. The Bristol Slaver 6. Port Isaac 7. The Train / Blackwaterside 8. Be Lucky 9. Longdog 10. The Keeper 11. The Downeaster 'Alexa' 12. The Oak 13. Innocents' Song / Gwithian 14. Tall Ships I think my favourite of those has to be Tall Ships, which on Roots you get in its 22 minute extended version. Someone who has only ever listened to a couple of Show of Hands songs ever will probably be along later to tell you why you shouldn't like them. |
Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: Rockhen Date: 12 Feb 08 - 09:43 AM Thanks for the titles, no comment re the other bit as I haven't got a clue what you meant but maybe best I stay uninformed !! Will give those tracks another listen first, I know those ones. |
Subject: RE: Show of Hands - Pocklington 3rd April From: Rockhen Date: 12 Feb 08 - 08:23 AM Any suggestions for some favourite Show of Hands tracks to listen to. I have borrowed cds from mates but am a bit overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of music. Which songs are particularly well-known ones, or favourites? I would like to have listened a few of them before going to the gig. |

Always nice to see them back, though, at this brilliant venue (anyone else see Oysterband there recently - totally awesome!). |
