Now if he ever needs guitar strings again he can just strip the insulation off any of those cables, untwist a few wires, and off ya go!

It might be safest to unplug the cable first, however.

The Google ads at the bottom are offering Lefse and Lefse supplies! A first at Mudcat, no doubt!

My book discusses Akevitt and Juleøl. Sounds quite marvelous.

I wonder what Art dreamed about last night? We've strayed seriously into another foodie thread after one night of his tossing and turning! :)

Lutefisk is made by soaking stokkfisk (dried cod) in lye, then steaming, simmering or baking to prepare. Bacalhau or bacalao or klippfisk is salted, dried cod. You can make lutefisk out of that too if you want, like they do in the part of Norway where I live. It's the softening in lye that makes it lutefisk (literally "lye fish"). Lutefisk is good - once a year, at Christmas , with lots of Christmas beer and akevitt to wash it down.

Skål!

Luttefisk is obviously a first cousin to Bacalhau which I took a liking to a few years back, when I had a Portuguese wife.

Actually, you'd like this book. I was mistaken. The book mentioned on the lutefisk site is Ekte Norsk Mat; my book is the same authors, but is Ekte Nork Jul, traditional christmas cooking. Cookies, pastries, cakes, breads. . . not a fisk in sight!

I suspect that getting lutefisk too close to the Dell might void the warranty.

Say--we could send Chris some lutefisk! We need to offer him a huge thank-you--without his help this would have been quite difficult to pull off.

Yes, it would be ludicrous to send one to Art!**BG**

Maggie, I was telling Art my parents used to talk about the lutefisk and lefse up in North Dakota where I was born. I don't remember it as we left when I was a baby, but that didn't keep them from calling me their "little Norwegian!" I don't think I'd like lutefisk! I can't believe they cure it in lye, just like you said, Art! Oh, well, if they let it go too long, it turns into a handy soap!

Lutefisk must be served hot on piping hot plates. Accompaniments vary from bacon or pork drippings, white sauce, mustard sauce, or melted butter which seems to remain a favorite. Boiled and steamed potatoes, stewed whole, dry green peas are a must as a vegetable accompaniment. The only other necessary additions are freshly ground pepper, lefse, or flatbread. In some parts of Northern Norway, lutefisk is served with melted goat cheese.

How can you resist it--hot fish and goat cheese?!

I have two copies of the cookbook mentioned at the bottom of that page, if you need one. . .

Place the lutefisk in water and boil, with uncrushed peppercorns and a little salt, for about fifteen minutes or until you can no longer stand the smell. Throw away the lutefisk and go out for dinner.

People, I awoke this morning and it was still here!! Again, you all are too much. I spent the morning downloading updates of all the areas of the computer that needed that done. Mostly Symantec, but some HP too. This machine really is FAST. I slept great last night. Had a strange dream where two politicians were in a debate! (Where could that've come from?) One of 'em yelled, "That's ludicrous!" And the other responded, "No, it's you that's luttefisk!!" ----- And it went on from there...

I told that to Kat on the phone today and I don't think she believed me. But that is accurate---just as it was dreamed. How the hell do you eat luttefisk anyhow? --- My spellcheck imploded on itself after that word confusticated it just now.

I'll be getting word to as many of you conspirators as I can learn about having had something to do with this grand gift!

To all of you, and to those who I miss finding out about, once again, THANK YOU!

I think I'll get some sleep, tonight. Last night was the second night we had Morgan over, but he was fine. Out like a light by 8p, slept all night, until I heard a teeny, quiet voice at about 630a say, "Mama can we get up now?"

Anyway...I realised sometime in the middle of the night that I was dreaming about Art getting his computer! Dang thing, it was in technicolour and you all were there and we was all cryin' and laughin' and slappin' each other on the back and the dream just kept weavin' in and out of my sleep. I'd get up for awhile, brush the cobwebs from my brain, lie back, then wake again to realise I'd been dreamin' it again! It was Groundhog's Day all over, but lots more fun! I don't think I've been this excited since the Christmas we girls knew we were getting our first transistor radios, AM monos with one earplug!

I bet Art likes the looks of THIS BOX even more than the others................

Goes like this Art.........Ya' see, its not that we like having you around here with bad puns all the time, although we do. And its not even that we would be lessened had you not started that brilliant and important Condom Thread, although we may have been. Actually what we do know is that you have so much great stuff to get filed and saved for future reference that we can't afford to trust the job to a worn out hamster ferchrissakes...........

Think of it this way......Most of us support NPR and PBS in the hopes that our $$$ go to something WE want, like maybe traditional music, instead of another informative special on Ubangi tribesman which, although interesting, I could really give less than two craps about. So some of us decided that if we gave our support to ART instead of PBS we'd be a lot better off.

Besides, I don't think any of us have ever had this much fun with NPR and PBS combined........(;<))

Pleased we could be of help.

I have to one-up you on that, Rapaire. THIS is a pretty box of that type. And as it happens, my mother's first cousin, Norman Ronning, was the last captain of the Preston before the Corps of Engineers retired her. (This is the same cousin Norman who used to take mom poaching salmon when they were kids during the depression. And I don't mean how they cooked it).

At work, some of the staff have "pimped up" their computers with neon lights and crystal clear acrylic cases, all sorts of nonsense. It would give me a headache to be long in a room with all of that stuff.

It's cold as a teachers wit out there!!!---
But here at Mudcat it sure is wonderfully warm!!

PEOPLE, you all have made a grown man weep with joy this day. Simply unbelievable---all of you. It is a beautiful shiny metallic gray, looking for all the world like a stylish dinghy for an Air Stream trailer with a glowing blue light up front like the long spear searchlight headlamp on the 8-wheel-driver steam express running from Chicago to Portland, Oregon.   It's four times faster than anything I've ever used before even with my prehistoric dial-up connection. I had no idea this was going down; Cat could've let the Kat out of the bag when I talked to her yesterday, but, no, not her! ----------It's a Dell, by the way, just so you all will know.

Really, a huge thank you to all who are involved in doing this. I will strive to learn to use it wisely. But tonight I am speechless and having a ton of fun putting it through it's paces.

Love to you all,

Art

There's the banjo serenader, and the others of his race,

And the people who eat peppermint and puff it in your face,

With regard to "squirrel wheels":

'Among the many models of the good society no one has urged the squirrel wheel'.

"So Galbraith remarks, yet living in affluent societies closely resembles a life on the squirrel wheel. This is the first aspect of the problem confronting those who live in a comparatively rich society. It arises because our aspirations get focussed on increasing income just as we have more of it than our parents or grandparents could ever have dreamt of. No sooner do we have more, than we want more….and so the wheel turns one more time, we re-adjust our beady eyes and begin to ascend the ladder again….with predictable effect."

There are also links to such apparatus, and no doubt with a little more research we could find a medieval wood block print.

Need I press this case? Or does the fur still fly?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
