Impossible. I just searched for Facebook and nothing came up. I know that there are lots of Mudcatters on Facebook. ls there no thread about that yet? Is this the first?

The only way I found it was to put "Facebook" in the thread title search box, b.w.:-) Click Here.

Yes, I know Facebook. I'm on it. I have my own page, and I'm in a few groups. Including the Mudcat group. I was simply having trouble finding a Mudcat thread about Facebook...I thought it would show up if I searched for it the usual way, but nothing appeared, which I'd found astonishing, all things considered.

So thanks Kat. You understood what I meant, even though I wasn't at all clear. Once again there's that weird connection....

No problem, b.w., I thought you were quite clear.:-)

I did hear some stuff about facebook, today, which would make me think twice about joining:

Just be careful about what personal information you put up there; full date of birth, and the like...

The applications you install have your 'permission' to access your friends' information as well; Employers are supposed to be scanning FB for wayward employees (and future ones...), etc., etc.

Just remember it's the internet...

"... life-stories displayed at your own risk..." ;-)

BW, as regards searching, I read that there was a crash some time ago (2005?) that screwed up the forum Search facility on Mudcat, so that posts since then are not indexed or cannot be found doing a normal search. There's a work-around using Google. I can't remember where I read this information on Mudcat.

If I'm wrong in any of this could someone correct it?

Don

Is it me or is the title of this thread the wrong way round?? Shouldn't it be "Finding Facebook on Mudcat" ????

Gulliver/Don, you are probably thinking of THIS THREAD. Hope that helps.:-)

b.w., I'll see if I can find the programme I heard, but it's basically what Brendy said. ANYONE can use your info AND your friends' info if they are listed on FB and none the wiser.

Katlaughing, yes, that's the thread I read. This info should be highlighted somewhere because I've noticed a number of Catters being confused by the lack of search results.

Surreysinger, yes, you are correct--I too found it confusing at the beginning (but then, I find most things confusing at the beginning!).

Gulliver, you can always tick the "Trace" to the far right of any thread and it will be archived on your Personal Page, so you can always find it and easily click on it to see if there are any new postings, etc.

Kat's question about some negative aspects of FB elicited Brendy's Just be careful about what personal information you put up there; full date of birth, and the like...

Another aspect that came to light during a radio interview I heard recently has to do with copyright ownership; anything posted on most such sytems is "apparently" owned in copyright terms by the owners of the website. While most of us might be happy that Max "owns" any copyright to the limericks, short stories and other gems we create on Mudcat we might be less than happy for more commercial enterprises to exercise similar rights to them.

Cheers, Rowan

Isn't it odd that by typing a few letters into a keyboard that we are in danger of losing a part of ourselves? It mystifies me that we've let ourselves become such commodities. Laws, rules, jibber-jabbler....meant to protect us orignally perhaps, but they seem to keep us away from freedom in the end.

There is going to be a programme on B.B.C. World T.V at 13.30 GMT on Saturday February the 9th.

I've seen the trailer for it, and sounds like it could be an interesting programme to watch.

"A Marketing Goldmine", I think, was how Facebook was described...

Hi b.w... I'm on mainland Europe, so I wont see it until 19.30.

If you go to this page: BBC World Schedules and select your region from the top menu, and the date thereafter, then it should show up.
All times are listed in GMT, so the necessary subtracting and adding has to be done from that.

USA Pacific Zone, for instance, wont have the programme until 01.30 GMT on Sunday 10th

I'm on it, I was asked to join by a coworker who wanted some events posted there. And I joined the mudcat group. Nothing personal, but everyone is doing stuff and they're doing it in their own names so that most of the time I'm clueless about all of the people and stuff that turns up on my page or wall or whatever. I basically ignore it now. I tried to get it to turn off all of the announcements, but that doesn't seem to work.

I'll probably unjoin the Mudcat group, simply because I feel so rude not responding to all of the stuff sent my way, and I'm not really curious or interested in trying all of these various add-ons. With as few of us in this group as there are, I can't imagine the virtual cacophony that must appear on screens of individuals who belong to very large groups.

I hear you, SRS. I ignore just about all of it, too. Nonetheless I have found that Facebook has helped me to connect "miraculously" with some early childhood music teachers I wouldn't have known otherwise. It can be a network maker, or time waster. It takes a certain amount of sifting, to be sure.

"Facebook may also collect information about you from other sources, such as newspapers, blogs, instant messaging services, and other users of the Facebook service through the operation of the service (e.g., photo tags) in order to provide you with more useful information and a more personalized experience.
By using Facebook, you are consenting to have your personal data transferred to and processed in the United States."

Taken from This Page

And Facebook's Terms of Use page gives more information about what they care about.

All the critics of FB on the programme stressed the importance of closing all your privacy settings down so as your personal info only is visible to your 'Facebook Friends'.

... it was the first thing I did when I joined, and there is no one on my friend list who I don't trust with whatever incriminating evidence I may have on my profile. I'm self-employed, and don't much care about impressing employers.

The horror stories we all hear about identity theft, and that, is down to users' own lack of internet savvyness in most cases; leaving full dates of birth, and the like visible to 'All My Friends and All my Networks' (Privacy settings tab)

We can expect mudcat-like ads on our applications pages; the ones that match the subject matter, and the like.
Is that 'intrusion', 'cos it must involve some keylogging...?
Maybe.., maybe not.

Facebook categorically stated, however that they will never pass 'personal information' on to 3rd Parties, and they wanted to stress that to the public, as they 'need to let (their) users know that they can trust us (Facebook Inc., that is).

The programme didn't really tell me anything I would have been shocked, or surprised to hear, however.

Caveat emptor.

B.

Just a little about my experiences:

I opened a Facebook account last year after reading about it here on Mudcat (and one of the first things I noticed was that practically every third-level student in Ireland must be on it!). I didn't use my real name or DoB or even email address, just as I didn't when first going on to MySpace, YouTube or LibraryThing.

After getting to know MySpace I found it to be a great resource for music, and started using my real name.

It took me longer to get adjusted to Facebook, as at the beginning I was bombarded with people wanting to play those (IMHO, childish) games, but recently I've discovered great information and sources for library work and web development that I do, and I may start using my own name.

YouTube is a fantastic resource for music and documentaries (I'm addicted!), but I don't think I need to divulge my identity there.

I'm just being cautious in not identifying myself, and think most people should be equally so, but the rewards of joining these sites can be immense.

IMHO it is wise to use a false name and details on Facebook. I do. Likewise MySpace. I use disposable email addresses from sharpmail there too.

It is still there on FB. The correct spelling is "Folkies in S.E. Queensland," though I didn't include the periods after the "S" and "E" when I searched on google and found the link.

the mud cat group is alive and well, and serves as a great place to gather in the event the REAL cat is down.

there have been, however some abuses stemming from this site.
(and spam and scam and other problems)

i also have gotten nummerous friend requests from people who seem to be mining the mudcat list...for instance==does anyone actually know
Clyde Sanadi, or have you agreed to be his friend because he says he knows lots of other mudcats? he has ships and sailing in his profile.
but not actaully mudcat or folk music...

there are 2 other mudcats on the facebook: Tybee Island, GA, and Franklin, TN. (one has a song by Bruce Murdoch on their Facebook page ...is this a case mistaken identity..) but OUR faceboook page is for mudcat cafe' here: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=10793388576
