Subject: RE: Ted McKenna, Dublin, c. mid 1960 s From: GUEST,Winger Date: 31 Jan 08 - 03:54 PM I have the album "Live in O'Donoghue's". |
Subject: RE: Ted McKenna, Dublin, c. mid 1960 s From: GUEST,Winger Date: 31 Jan 08 - 04:03 PM No, Barney wasn't involved. Ted McKenna (vocals/mandolin) was the main man, with his younger brother on guitar. They also had a concertina player, if I remember correctly. |
Subject: RE: Ted McKenna, Dublin, c. mid 1960 s From: GUEST,OLD TIMER Date: 01 Feb 08 - 04:34 AM Thanks Winger, youve got it ,thats him, nothing to do with Barney.I knew about the album.Do you know of a copy anywhere ?They also played at The Castle Inn Dame St regularly during those days. They had some wonderful seldom - heard songs. Do you know if he is still alive ? |
Subject: RE: Ted McKenna, Dublin, c. mid 1960 s From: GUEST,Winger Date: 01 Feb 08 - 12:20 PM Well, I haven't heard that he isn't alive. Perhaps a query posted on www.belfastfolk.co.uk might bring a response. That site covers a lot of the 60s era and sometimes attracts input about the Dublin scene of the same time. Apart from my own copy of "Live at O'Donoghues", I've never seen the album anywhere. |
Subject: RE: Ted McKenna, Dublin, c. mid 1960 s From: Geoff Wallis Date: 01 Feb 08 - 12:30 PM Winger, could you possibly post the details of the 'Live at O'Donoghue's ' LP on this thread (label name and catalogue number)? Thanks - it will help my ongoing discographical work - http://www.irishmusicreview.com . |

Subject: RE: Ted McKenna, Dublin, c. mid 1960 s From: Folkiedave Date: 01 Feb 08 - 12:47 PM I used to go across to Dublin fairly regularly at that time and certainly remember them playing in the back room on Sunday afternoons. |
Subject: RE: Ted McKenna, Dublin, c. mid 1960 s From: MARINER Date: 01 Feb 08 - 04:47 PM The McKennas featured in a film shot in O'Donahue's in the early 60s.It was shown on RTE's "Come West Along The Road " a few weeks back.It was based on the song "The Night Before Larry Was Stretched" .Also featured were Ronnie Drew as Larry and the rest of The Dubliners as cast members. This was in the time Bobby Lynch was with them.Johnny Moynihan sang the song throughout the film .Not sure if it's available but it's worth checking out . Sorry for the slight thread creep |
Subject: RE: Ted McKenna, Dublin, c. mid 1960 s From: GUEST,Winger Date: 01 Feb 08 - 04:58 PM Sounds like "O'Donoghue's Opera". It was shout in the 60s but never finished due to lack of funds. I think it was only in the last decade that an effort was made to whip it into some kind of viewable form. I know that snippets of it have put on YouTube. |
Subject: RE: Ted McKenna, Dublin, c. mid 1960 s From: Folkiedave Date: 01 Feb 08 - 05:19 PM They were also on RTE's "Ballad Session" produced by Kevin Sheldon (memory could stand correction here - but I lived in Holyhead and we could get RTE). A bit like the Dublin people watching BBC!! |
Subject: RE: Ted McKenna, Dublin, c. mid 1960 s From: Fergie Date: 01 Feb 08 - 09:05 PM O'Donoghue's Opera is available here http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=356252404053826816&pr=goog-sl |
Subject: RE: Ted McKenna, Dublin, c. mid 1960 s From: GUEST,Winger Date: 02 Feb 08 - 12:13 AM Geoff, the album is "Live at O'Donoghues" (credited to The McKenna Brothers). It was on the Golden Guinea label (GSGL 0441) and was released in 1969. Fergie, "O'Donoghue's Opera" makes fascinating viewing, particularly the cast of "extras" in the film (Seamus Ennis, Andy Irvine, Brendan Byrne, etc.) |

Subject: RE: Ted McKenna, Dublin, c. mid 1960 s From: GUEST,Liberty Boy (sans cookie) Date: 28 Oct 12 - 02:45 AM Just for the record, the line up in The McKenna Folk were: Ted McKenna on mandolin and vocals, Gordon McKenna on guitar and Pat Stokes, their brother in law on concertina. The last time I saw Ted and Gordon was at Pat's funeral a good few years ago. |
Subject: RE: Ted McKenna, Dublin, c. mid 1960 s From: GUEST,Erich Date: 28 Oct 12 - 04:47 AM I have an album called The Whistlebinkies & Ted McKenna. It's on the AMIGA Label (German Democratic Republic) and it seems to be from 1977. The tracks sung by TM are: Champion at keeping them rolling, Blackleg Miner and Rocky Road to Dublin. The other tracks are sung and played by the Whistlebinkies. |
Subject: RE: Ted McKenna, Dublin, c. mid 1960 s From: GUEST,Niall MacDonagh Date: 25 Nov 12 - 10:42 PM I have their album Live at O'Donoghues (I wrote the notes to the songs) and have had it converted to MP3 format. Ted recently showed up on a YouTube video at a tribute to filmmaker Peter Lennon singing Go Lassie Go. I had a hard time recognizing the singing voice but as soon as I heard him speak I knew it was him. I made the MP3s for old friends most of whom were in O'D's when it was recorded but if anyone wants then e-mail me at niallfromdublin@yahoo.com |

Subject: RE: Ted McKenna, Dublin, c. mid 1960 s From: GUEST,Alan Date: 17 Mar 13 - 11:26 PM I worked with a Ted McKenna a number of years ago in Dublin before we were both made redundant when the company closed down in 2005. He was heavily involved with the union and represented the workers in the redundancy negotiations. I knew he was into his Irish music but only learnt afterwards of the true extent of his involvement. I am sure this is the same Ted McKenna mentioned here as it fits in with his age and what I heard about him. Sadly Ted died not long after the closure of the company. His wife had predeceased him a couple of years previously. He was a true gentleman and it was nice to find the song below to finally hear him sing. RIP. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DH__YIVzJBE |
Subject: RE: Ted McKenna, Dublin, c. mid 1960 s From: GUEST,Alan Date: 17 Mar 13 - 11:53 PM Ignore my post above about Ted dying. I just saw Niall's post about him singing in 2011 at the Peter Lennon tribute. It is indeed the Ted McKenna I worked with. I rang another former work colleague and we were both told by someone else that he had died. It is a bit of a shock to say the least to find out he is still alive. I would delete or edit my post above but it wont let me. Apologies for the misinformation. The video of him singing is below. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwREX8076no |
Subject: RE: Ted McKenna, Dublin, c. mid 1960 s From: NiallMac Date: 03 Jun 13 - 12:07 PM I have reconnected with Ted (he was my best man) and Gordon after 40+ years and we will be getting together in O'Donoghues in September along with as many of the surviving denizens of O'Donoghues from those days as we can find. If anyone knows of any such people please pass along my e-mail, niallfromdublin@yahoo.com. Here is a link to Ted singing in O'Donoghues in 1968, an actual video. I was there but the camera did not find me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75t38K_tQ6w I also posted a few tracks from their album on youtube. I will reiterate that I will be happy to send MP3s of the entire album to anyone who asks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2jBPrYNMlo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tG1ncldpV6k http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DH__YIVzJBE |
