He had such great talent! We sat around many times with Ricky singing and playing his guitar. (Might have drank a little beer and burnt a few)!! I tried for years to contact him but Rick was a very private person. I first met Rick in the 1970's in Beaumont, Texas. Can you tell me where he is buried. I would love to visit my old friend. Mildred Bailey should be on everyone's short list of great jazz singers-- The Hoagy composition is one of my favorite songs, right up there with his other songs-- |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Tune Req: Old Rocking Chair From: PoppaGator Date: 01 Oct 08 - 05:17 PM Don, I suggested The Band's "Rocking Chair" day before yesterday and it seems that it's not what the person is looking for... It sure is a great song, though, isn't it? |
Subject: Lyr Add: ROCKIN' CHAIR (Robbie Robertson) From: DonMeixner Date: 01 Oct 08 - 01:30 PM ROCKIN' CHAIR (Robbie Robertson) Hang around, Willie boy. Don't you raise the sails anymore. It's for sure; I've spent my whole life at sea And I'm pushin' age seventy-three. Now there's only one place that was meant for me. Oh, to be home again down in Old Virginny With my very best friend! They call him 'Ragtime Willie'. We're gonna soothe away the rest of our years. We're gonna put away all of our tears. That big rockin' chair won't go nowhere. Slow down, Willie boy. Your heart's gonna give right out on you. It's true, and I believe I know what we should do: Turn the stern and point to shore. The seven seas won't carry us no more. Oh, to be home again down in Old Virginny With my very best friend! They call him 'Ragtime Willie'. I can't wait to sniff that air Dippin' snuff, I won't have no care. That big rockin' chair won't go nowhere. Hear the sound, Willie boy. The Flyin' Dutchman's on the reef. It's my belief, we've used up all our time. This hill's too steep to climb And the days that remain ain't worth a dime. Oh, to be home again down in Old Virginny With my very best friend! They call him 'Ragtime Willie'. Would 'a' been nice just to see the folks, Listen once again to the stale jokes. That big rockin' chair won't go nowhere. I can hear somethin' callin' on me And you know where I want to be. Oh, Willie, don't you hear that sound? Oh, to be home again down in Old Virginny! I just want to get my feet back on the ground. Oh, to be home again down in Old Virginny! I'd love to see my very best friend. They call him 'Ragtime Willie'. I believe old rockin chair's got me. Oh, to be home again! © CANAAN MUSIC INC; WB MUSIC CORP.; Is this the one do you suspect? Subject: RE: Lyr/Tune Req: Old Rocking Chair From: PoppaGator Date: 01 Oct 08 - 01:15 PM I've got that Tagarden/Satchmo duet on CD ~ it is really great. I have the impression that none of the "Rocking Chair" songs we've mentioned are the one being sought by Lynn ~ not the old standard, not the Band song, not the Rick Cardwell song, and not whatever is sung by Jerry Jeff Walker. There most be more... I just Googled ["Old Rocking Chair" = lyrics] in an attempt to find the composer of the "standard" ~ I think it may have been Hoagy Carmichael, but don't know for sure. I found it listed under the name Ted Heath, but Ted may have been the bandleader/recording-artist of one rendition rather than the writer ~ most internet lyrics sites ignore the songwriter credits and credit songs to performers, and this source could have been one such site. I also learned that there's a C&W song "Rocking Alone in my Old Rocking Chair" which was recorded by Eddy Arnold, Hank Snow, and the Everly Brothers, plus at least one other song featuring the phrase "old rocking chair" which is entitled "Home Among the Gumtrees." ("Gumtrees" mentions Vegemite, so I'd guess it's Australian.) |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Tune Req: Old Rocking Chair From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 30 Sep 08 - 06:58 PM The version some people find definitive was done by the great trombonist/singer Jack Teagarden and Louis Armstrong. It has been included in several albums and CD compilations. It's a real musical "conversation." The one I have is from the Smithsonian Collection. Armstrong and Teagarden were old bandmates and friends. Jack had a baritone that almost mimicked the sound of his trombone, which was one of the most lyrical and sweet sounding of his era. Teagarden, when playing with Louie, had refused to play in places that did not admit blacks. Even though he was from Texas, he was noted for his hard-headed fairness. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Tune Req: Old Rocking Chair From: GUEST Date: 30 Sep 08 - 07:26 AM I don't think either of those are the ones I was looking for. I had an album (years ago) that had the song on it but for the life of me I do not remember which group it was. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Tune Req: Old Rocking Chair From: Beer Date: 29 Sep 08 - 04:23 PM Dan and Jim Dixon, the lyrics to the song your referring to is sung by Jerry Jeff Walker. Probably many others as well, but Jerry Jeff does a wonderful job of it. Beer (adrien) |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Tune Req: Old Rocking Chair From: PoppaGator Date: 29 Sep 08 - 03:40 PM The little snippet of lyric you give sounds like it might be The Band's (Robbie Robertson's) song of the same title, which icnludes the line "that big rocking chair won't go nowhere": http://theband.hiof.no/lyrics/rockin_chair.html Just as in the othwer song(s) of this title, the rocking chair is a symbol of retirement or old age. May not be just what you want for a little kid ~ although it is a beautiful song |

Subject: Lyr Add: ROCKIN' CHAIR (Rick Cardwell) From: Jim Dixon Date: 21 Sep 03 - 11:40 AM Here's a more complete version of the above song, copied from http://www.marcogiunco.com/testi/001714_13.htm ROCKIN' CHAIR (Rick Cardwell) There's an old rockin' chair castin' memories everywhere On that old home porch across from Tipple's store. You can see where the arm is worn Where my granddaddy rested his arm In that old rockin' chair that don't rock no more. I was born in a broken home. I was blinded by things gone wrong. I had no vision of what the future held in store; Just a baby barely three When my granddaddy came to me To rock me in the rockin' chair that don't rock no more. CHORUS: If the rockin' chair could read the thoughts from people's minds, Oh, the stories it would tell time after time: Stories others never hear Of the thoughts one holds so dear. Oh, how I wish I could've read my grandpa's mind! Granddaddy lived the Christian way. Truth and goodness he portrayed. He loved to gather his thoughts as he rocked on the hardwood porch. Yes, he loved to sit and rock. Payin' no attention to the time on the clock. And rocked me in the rockin' chair that don't rock no more. CHORUS |

Subject: RE: Old Rocking Chair From: Dan Date: 11 May 99 - 09:38 AM And here's one sung by I don't remember but I love it: There's an old rocking chair Casting memories everywhere On the old home porch up across from Tipple's store. You can see where the arm is worn Where my granddaddy rested his arm In the old rocking chair that don't rock no more. (Chorus) If rocking chairs could read The thoughts from people's minds, The stories they would tell time after time. Yes the stories people never hear About the thoughts they hold so dear. How I wish I could have read my grandpa's mind. |

Subject: Old Rocking Chair From: Lynn Koch, KinderFolk Music Productions Date: 10 May 99 - 09:25 AM I'm looking for a song for a friend with a young child who likes to rock in a rocking chair. A line of the song goes something like "That old rocking chair that goes nowhere." Can anyone help with lyrics or a tune? |
